An excellent tribute that should make all Australians feel proud. As for the demise of this wonderful airline, then we are all to blame. The greedy employees, disrespectful passengers, banks and the Australian Government... All long before Air New Zealand finally sunk the boot in!!
Air New Zealand only bought Ansett to try and get into the Australian Stock Market, however, when this was denied, they kind of went off the idea and literally flew Ansett into the ground. I do think that Air NZ is to blame, as they were and still are a small airline. At the time of Ansetts Collapse, they had 138 aircraft, Air NZ only has 51 (today), not sure how many they had back then. Air NZ jumped too far ahead of them selves, they have no interest in what happened to Ansett.
Although the collapse of Ansett wasn't completely Air New Zealand's fault, a vast of majority of the blame lies with Air New Zealand. In my opinion the blame lies as follows- 85% Air New Zealand, 3% Qantas, 6% Toll Aviation, 4% NewsCorp and 2% Howard Government.
I blame Howard,News Corp, and i partly blame Air New Zealand. I am not sure why you are blaming Qantas. Considering Qantas had loan Aircraft to Ansett to keep them a float. And i am sure there was more things Qantas did to Assist Ansett that we don't know about. News Corp had run down Ansett for a long time. News Corp also refused Air New zealand to see the books before the sale. Air New Zealand were stupid to buy it with out seeing the books.
@wozvideo as you can see from my percentages I don't blame Qantas that much as business is business. But one of the reasons Ansett folded is because Qantas saw they were in trouble so they under cut them as far as they could and brought in extra capacity and that was the end of things.
Are you sure Qantas was undercutting Ansett or was it Virgin they were undercutting and Ansett was stuck in the middle. From what i know Qantas had loan several aircraft to Ansett to keep them running. It was in Qantas best interest to help Ansett so they could get rid of Virgin. And Virgin are also missing in the equation they are also to blame for Ansett demise. I am not sticking up for Qantas. But i do know something about it.
Part TWO. Air New Zealand went for bigger fish and lost. As a result Air New Zealand collapse and so did Ansett. Air New Zealand survived only because the NZ government bailed it out. This is something Howard should have done with Ansett. And to this day i still don't understand why he didn't bail them out. Considering the economical consequences which lasted years because of the collapse.
I just love how dimwitted people lay all the blame on Ansetts collapse squarely on Air New Zealand. Do any of you know any of the facts that led to this sad and tragic collapse? or are you all to ignorant to understand them? A good source for facts - look it up on Wikipedia.
@WilliamVandervleut Qantas wasn't just as good at the time! Ansett offered faster check-in, generally lower fares (not a heck lot lower, but lower), nicer meals, more leg room, friendlier staff, BETTER staff, cheaper frequent flyer program joining fee, more destinations, higher frequencies, better lounge, more rewarding frequent flyer program, better terminals and unlike QANTAS it actually tried to help other bankrupt carriers stay flying- when Compass went under it offered staff jobs with them.
@WilliamVandervleut QANTAS was around long before Ansett, ANA and TAA. QANTAS became international-only. Ansett was Australia's best domestic airline and left TAA for dead. TAA became Australian Airlines and eventually QANTAS took them over. Ansett was taken over by an incompetent Air NZ, who had no idea how to run a massive airline transport system. Air NZ ran Ansett into the ground until it failed.
@scotmr Is that why Air NZ were cleared of any wrong doing? Sure Air NZ was ambitious in buying an Airline much bigger than it self. Actually why don't you search Ansett on wikipedia and look under Air NZ/Ansett Merger and collapse.
read the facts dick. It clearly wasn't entirely Air NZ's fault, in fact Air NZ did everything it could to try prevent this happening, Air NZ were taken for a ride.
@faginnz Facts: Air NZ bought them as a top-rated airline. Up till then, used Ansett aircraft always brought top resale prices because of excellent maintenance. After Air NZ withdrew financial support and Ansett collapsed, many aircraft were ripped apart for scrap metal as they were now worthless. Wikipedia? That's hardly a source of truth. It's mostly opinions - like this commentary. How could Air NZ be cleared when they were the parent company? They asset-stripped Ansett.
@WilliamVandervleut You are kidding...right?!!!... and QF being around now has absolutely nothing to do with service excellence and the experience you had with flying Ansett Australia... look around you at the support when the collapse happened, and even on You Tube vids like this!
@darwincity considering ansett got screwed over by Air NZ, good for you, Thank you air nz for f**king our airline and my job along with thousands of others, enjoy your flight with the company the destroyed an airline and aussie history in a matter of weeks!!
Thank you for posting. Love the song. Saw the ads when I was a kid. I plane spot lots. First plane I went on too me to Disneyland (ZK-NSX). Quite frankly, T3 at Tulla is disappointing without the Southern Cross. I enjoy the pizza in a bar there, but nothing matches to walking off a concourse and turning to my left and seeing those awesome Ansett jets at the next concourse. I walked on a different plane that day, but I kid you not, that moment was a baby zebra "imprinting" in the wild.
It was a real shame that Ansett collapse. And even worse that the Howard government allowed it to collapse. They should have bail out Ansett. And now we have three sub standard Airlines Jetstar, Tiger, and Virgin to fill the void. They maybe cheaper but they never were up to the standards of Ansett or Qantas.
@wozvideo couldn't agree with you more!!!... all these cheap ar$e airlines who provide crap service! Qantas don't offer much better service - marginally perhaps.
I love ansett airlines and always will i remember flying with them all the time to perth with my dad and visiting the cockpit before 9/11 its such a shame they went bankrupt
i took a flight with Ansett once in the year 1998 if im not mistaken. i was so young at that time but i just cant forget how i enjoyed flying with Ansett. N i still remember they played Enya's song Only Time when i boarded the 767 plane from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney. How i miss flying with Ansett.
Thanks to you buffalosouljar for your work in putting this together, like other ex-AN staff (Nov 1990 - Mar 2002 for me), this brings many fantastic memories back. Your mum must be proud.
Thanks for the video,I like it, brings back many memories for me as well, without a doubt one of the worlds best airlines........Sad to think that they are not around any more. I flew on many of the Aircraft in this clip.....Ansett International 743s & 744s were special, by far the best service to Honkers.....We Aussies were lucky in those days compared to what the industry is like today.
Fantastic video i worked for Ansett from the age of 15 until the demise (1975 to 2002).Your video brings back great memory's of a great Airline and the great family of staff that worked there RIP Ansett .Thanks
Damn shame what happened to Ansett...yes it was primarily Air New Zealands fault but blame also belongs with the government regulators of Australia and New Zealand for allowing the 'merger' to happen
Great airline and so sad what happened. Have visited the Ansett Museum at Hamilton Vic Aust and a few tears shed in there. Have a 1/200 scale model of 727-200 VH-RMK on top of the TV so I see it often. Such beautiful livery and such excellent service from happy dedicated staff. So far ahead or TAA and a mile in front of Qantas with service and attitude.
i just noticed the ansett airways logo on the side of a plane in the HBO series "the pacific" i just wanted to find out if it was a movie mistake or was ansett around in WW2?
awesome video, our family used to only fly Ansett :( Air NZ staff, i cant wait to see your airline collapse, so the world can laugh at you.. as someone commented, what goes around comes around. We miss you Ansett crew!
Thinking about it I dont think I have read one bad comment about Ansett. As an employee with DJ most days I am reminded of this once great airline. I really feel today the public do not appreciate what it means to fly onboard an airliner and the excitement of flying has been lost and this is due to the service or lack of service provided today by these budget airlines. I wish I knew how it felt to work for AN!
As a former Ansett employee I thought I'd take the time to say "thank you" for creating this fantastic video. I do miss my colleagues - or as someone else put it "my Ansett family".
Watching this made me feel happy, and bloody sad at the same time. My elder brother worked for Ansett for years in the Credit Management Dept, and also, being an ex serviceman, flew with Ansett many many times over my short career.
Loved the pictures, as well as Enya as the background music. Nice touch there.
I still think their 1970 ad with the black swan straining to achieve flight, is one of the best if not the best ads ever produced.

I dearly loved that airline and supported them all the way, great service, great people and thank your very much for a great vid.
