@superheaton try the boston acoustics spz's got mine for 500$ they handle 200 watts they are rated at 150 rms per side but i have them bi amped at 200 and they just rock! they have the best crossovers in the game running them with 1 one jl w6 10 sub at 500 watts rms it is better than high end head phones

Sn95chico is correct about the proper purpose of mid-bass driver. But, the argument of SPL over SQL just proves the caliber person you are when purchasing a product in the audio field. This driver comparison is like pitting a 300HP Subaru against a 260HP Mercedes E-class. Why sure the subaru is cheaper and faster. But the Mercedes is more refined to those who have higher standards, thus the price. Better sound quality, not quantity.

no, you obviously don't know anything about car audio...there are so many brands that can blow JL's shit right out of the water. Amps: Brax, Helix, Sinfoni. Subs: Digital Designs, RE Audio, Treo. Speakers: Rainbow, Morel, Seas...
Haha, definitely man. RE, Fi, Audiopulse/TC Sounds, DD, Treo, Cascade Designs, MMATS, DC Sound Labs, and the list continues.. I'm with you baseballtycoon1 :P
I may not know everything about car audio, but I do know in the world of home audio, JL Audio has made one heck of a name for themselves with the Fathom subwoofer. They took the W7 driver, re-conditioned it, made a 2500 watt amplifier for the 13 in. model, a 1500 watt amp for the 12 in., and a 900 watt amp for the 10 in., then they put it in a nice MDF box. The 13 in. goes for $3500, the 12 goes for $2800, and the new 10 in. goes for $2200, and they all compete with subs costing 10x as much.
Also, I prefer Hertz's speakers and Audison amps. But, I think given the W7's success in the home audio division, you can't beat the W7's sound quality. Oh hell yeah, you can get louder ones, but they most likely don't have the sound quality any of JL's subs have. Also, you gotta respect the pride JL has in making their products. They don't outsource production or use off the shelf parts like most companies do, and their whole objective is to make the best-sounding speakers; not the "loudest."
I disagree, word on the street is the only woofer JL does not outsource is the JL w7. I may be wrong, but I lack the interest to look further into it.
Also, I know those home audio JL subwoofer sets are not you standard, off the shelf W7's, and many would agree that the w6 is by far a better sounding subwoofer, compared to a w7.
That couldn't be further from the truth. The W0v2 and W1v2 are the only JL subs that are outsourced. The tool that made up what you said sure went far to discredit JL. But, you don't have to believe me.
It is true the drivers used in the Fathom and Gotham are different from the actual W7, but they are still extremely similar. The amazing thing is that two of the best home subs, and considered by some the best, are based off of a SPL-grade car sub, which are notorious for sounding like crap.
Also, if the W7 is installed perfectly, and you play music with real instruments, such as rock, classical, or jazz, it'll outperform the W6v2 in sound quality. You can't judge any speaker's sound quality based on how it sounds with bass music, which is just synthesized electronic tones. There's really no fidelity there to begin with.
"You can't judge any speaker's sound quality based on how it sounds with bass music"
I'm fully aware.
"play music with real instruments, such as rock, classical, or jazz, it'll outperform the W6v2 in sound quality"
I highy disagree. People can say whatever they want. Maybe that is your preference, but my ears tell me the W7 does not sound near as natural as the W6, in any install...
It is true that it really does come down to personal preference. The W6v2 is an absolutely amazing sub, too. As a matter of fact, even though I'd save my pennies for a Fathom instead, a JL Audio rep told me they're coming out with a new line of less-expensive home subs that I imagine will have a driver based on the W6. I can't wait to hear them!
Possible to an extent, still limited by hoffmans iron law.
I did have the chance of hearing a fathom, in a huge room, and without breaking a sweat, it made all the other "high end" subwoofer cabinets sound like clock radio's, lol.
For music reproduction, I'd much rather have a w6, or variation of. Rather than a monster woofer with huge energy during movies, but has to be EQ'd for each song.
I don't know anything about the Thor's Hammer, I'll have to look that up. Cheers.
It is a matter of personal preference. When I've heard the Fathom, however, it seems as if you can't even tell it's there because it blends in with the music so well. But, if you put in a movie with some serious low-bass action scenes, the Fathom will kick your ass.
Wilson Audio, which makes the T'sH, makes some of the best speakers in the world, which average around $30,000/pair (the Watt/Puppy) and go up to $150K/pair (the Alexandria X2). Because of this, most people haven't heard of Wilson.
The Wilson Thor's Hammer, one of the only home subs I've been told can beat the Gotham, has 2 massive 15" dual-spider drivers. Not only does this sub sound amazing, but with just 250 watts of power, it broke the plastic surround off a security keypad in the demo room. This thing is obviously has 2 ridiculously high-output drivers, but it still is considered one of the best-sounding subs out there. Really, really good high-output subs won't come with a sacrifice in SQ.
Also, are you saying that one ZR woofer is $490? According to JL's website, each ZR woofer is about $200 (about $400/pair). The whole ZR system, including two crossovers, 2 tweeters, and 2 woofers, is $870.
The website pricing is going to be very high, that's usually high it is. Website shows retail pricing. Dealer pricing is rarely the same as MSRP.
That price is also for the whole "ZR System" as you put it. At least I'm assuming so since the price on the RE XXX component set is for the whole set.
This video doesn't really prove anything. Sure, the XXX is bigger and cheaper, but the JL is made for sound quality, just like all of JL's products are. Play some music with acoustic instruments and see how they compare (and connect the tweeter and put them in a box). Also, all of JL's products, except the W1v2, are made in the US.
But, I prefer Hertz component speakers to JL's Evolution (but JL's sub's SQ is almost unmatched). The equivalent to the ZR, the Mille 165, sounds better.
now see i have the standard re 6.5 comps and i already had a tweeter go out after about 10 months which kinda made a bad experience.. but i still like them
I bet the ZR has better SQ

Me? LOL.
Why did you reply to my comment?
I am far from "stuck in a JL world". FYI.

Also.... bottom line is the W7 is designed to be a high output driver.... that comes with comprimise, period.
The W6 is more of an all around high end driver.

Ascendant Audio Havoc subwoofers surpass the w7 in sq and spl.

The equivalent to the ZR, the Mille 165, sounds better.

where can u get XXX components for $270? They run around $500.

Contact a dealer, I got my set for about $250.

They are both China parts speakers. JL just has an obvious higher sticker. Try a DD W6.5 or even some CDTs.

It's a very good joke. Try it in a car, you will hear the difference...
