In some ways yes but in other ways it is far inferior - one of the biggest problems with both franchises is the corporate suits always tend to put their oars in and muddy the waters/continuity of the storylines so much that even the novice viewers watch and go "That contradicts the # film/tv programme".

This movie is a brilliant move, because nothing has ruined science fiction more than dismal, lifeless CGI "effects". Finally, Hollywood is starting to remember what made the old films so great and the new stuff so crappy: an emphasis on story and character, not unimaginative computer animation. The directors with the series, Star Trek, TNG, DS9 and Voyager did a wonderful job, it really felt like "Star Trek". Enterprise caused the first crack. Now this movie will begin the splintering.
