Huh. This is disappointing. Care to show how to install linux on the hard drive, as a third partition, without screwing over the other two OSs? That way you can modify and save settings in linux and you don't need a cd.
You can use rEFIt to have ubuntu as an option. Oh and you suck as a "computer expert" (or whatever you want to call what you are trying to be) so stop making these videos and leave it to the professionals.
I have to disagree. You have a very very poor review of one type of Linux distribution. Very very poor effort. You showed little to nothing of the system and you forgot to mention that mac wrote the code for its proprietary drivers. Linux has to guess what the fuck your trying to install it on and then do what it can with what its given. Then again Linux can run on a pc as well... Anyway that was a very very poor effort.
Running linux off a CD is NOT interesting. Try installing Ubuntu using wubi (or Linux Mint using its equivalent Windows installer, whose name I forgot).
when you're at the bootcamp partition screen selection screen (where you switch form mac to windows), can you insert the line cd and then load windows???
currently i have a mac partition and a windows one made through bootcamp. I want to install ubuntu. If I backup my system will I be able to back up both partitions incase my triple boot attempt goes wrong somehow. I am just concerned about being able to go back to my mac now if triple booting doesn't work out. thanks. Is it possible to use bootcamps loader for triple booting.
If I install Ubuntu with rEFIt, how easy is it to uninstall Ubuntu and rEFIt? If I want to install Windows again, how would I delete the Ubuntu partitions and also rEFIt? Thanks for the help.
thanks for the video, you are very easy to listen to :D
could you do a video ( or something or show me a link where to go) and show how to set up booth camp with windows xp pro, how do you go about it, i guess you need to divide the hard disk?for the operating systems.
can i run booth camp on just my macbook? i dont have a macbook pro?
You will be able to install XP Pro fine on the MacBook, the installation is pretty strait forward, and the BootCamp assistant will help you partition (divide) the hard drive, if you follow the steps in the program, the program will automatically reboot the system and search for the XP Pro CD, then after you finish installing XP, just insert the first OS X DVD (while in Windows) to install the hardware drivers
If you get a virus and need to format and reinstall Windows, you can just format it FAT32 in Disk Utility, then take the Windows XP Pro disc and reinstall XP, the only thing you have to be careful with when formatting and reinstalling Windows is that when you reinstall Windows, it will not say "BOOTCAMP" anymore, so you have to look for the FAT32 partition to reinstall Windows on, then you will have to reinstall the drivers from the OS X DVD
If you want to remove the partition, you will need
for the moment im running with VMware fusion for a few reasons but one being that i didnt have to partition my harddisk, but i cant get Simatic to run on it, the program does run on xp pro but when i use vmware it says wrong operating system. :S any ideas?
Not sure, it does sound strange, must have something to do with VMWare, are you using Symantec for antivirus protection? If so, try using Avast instead and see if that works
If you wanted to triboot with Ubuntu on the drive, I do think you could use the Disk Utilities to do a 3 way partition, or just start from scratch and partition from the OS X installer DVD, and I think as long as you name your partitions, you should be able to install both XP and Ubuntu alongside OS X, I would be interested if this could be installed on an external hard drive or flash drive, I would use it a lot more myself if so
Actually, you can, you plug in the flash drive, hold down the Option key during boot, and in the boot list, you will see 1 or 2 hard drives (depending if you used bootcamp or not), and you will see an orange external drive looking thing with a USB tree logo on it with the word "Windows" under it, the only thing I wonder though is if Ubuntu will even install on an external hard drive, I wondered the same thing about Vista, because I originally wanted to run Vista on an external hard drive,
but for the way Vista is programmed (this goes for every version of Windows), Vista (along with all other versions of Windows)are unable to be installed on an external hard drive or flash drive, the Mac itself IS USB bootable though
I run Leopard and XP on my MBPro. Vista on my desktop PC.
I recently upgraded the MBPro from 2 to 4gb of RAM. Somehow it seems that programs are loading somewhat slower :S Anyone experienced that? It's Apple branded RAM sticks (originals).
my friend has xp, vista, ubuntu linux, and mac os x leopard 10.5.3 on his pc only using 3 partitions. I have no idea how he did it, but it works flawlessly. btw, its not triple boot if linux is from a cd, it needs to be on the actual HDD.
You could install all on one hard drive. It's really easy to set up multiple operating systems, especially if you install the Linux one last (because it automatically adds all the other OSs to the list to choose from).
you can install it as a 3 partition system... just run boot camp to partition it once, then use fdisk (standard with almost all linux distros) to break up the second partition you made into another 1, giving you three. Install ubuntu on one of them, then restart and install windows on the other one. Note, you will have to cause the gnu/linux partition to be "inactive" to correctly install xp, but you can reactivate it once you have xp installed
If you mess around with your EFI, you can cause future problems to the Mac when you don't want Windows or Linux anymore, or if you don't want rEFIt anymore
It's just that rEFIt does have ties with the EFI (hence it's name), the EFI is like the BIOS of PCs, and if you make a mistake, it could cause problems booting, I just don't understand the point in using rEFIt as the boot menu (the menu you get when you hold down Option during boot), while it thinks any PC operating system is "Windows", works perfectly fine
Ubuntu out of the box does look dull but once you setup compiz it blows osx out of the water and its a faster, more secure, and more stable operating system.
Correction: runs 1% of the number of useful applications that Mac OS X does that you know about. There are applications to replace virtually anything that you can get on Windows or Mac operating systems. There are thousands upon thousands of legally free applications for Linux. You can't compare a free, open source operating system to commercial operating systems. I personally don't like to pay for software so I use Linux. Take your pick based on your preference.
Correction: you get what you pay for. In the case of Linux, which I have and use, it does not come close in almost every single category to Mac OS X and the software you can get there.
is the only way to do triple booting by having a ubuntu c.d?? Are you able to have all three installed (ox s,windows,ubuntu)w/ out running of the ubuntu c.d?? Do you think run all 3 by using parallels??
Don't you mean partitions? Parallels means you emulate an operating system by running it in another (in this case, it would be running Windows and Linux within OS X), partitioning allows you to install a different operating system on the same hard drive, making multiple "drives" out of one, so when you choose an OS, you really choose a partition, or "drive" to boot from, then once the partition or "drive" is mounted, it launches the operating system's boot files
This guy has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to ubuntu or linux. Maybe if he knew a anything about computers her could enable compiz, or even beryl to make if feel more polished. I dont know many computers in 94 that could do what linux does (search beryl on youtube to see what I mean)
I think mac os feels unpolished compared to well set up ubunto or fedora install. Remeber this guy is running the whole os from a cd, compared to fully installed os's that take up gigs
So can you not install ubuntu on there because bootcamp will only allow windows natively or just that you can only have two partitions and you would rather have windows? I really hope I can install some linux distro natively, mac osx just isn't enough unix like for me.
ubuntu seems to steal some of the style of windows like the bar at the bottom and mac like the bar at the top.....but then it has its on stuff...soo its all good...but its pretty cool....
i most likely would not use it as my Default OS i would prolly use it just to play around wit it...neva even seen or played wit ubuntu or on a real computer just for experimenting...and u could save ur stuff on prolly an external hard drive.....*which i have*

Well, no, not really. There are so many core technologies built in OS X that about the only thing they really have in common is the actual core.

I'd rather say that they're both POSIX compatible and leave it at that.

at low level, mac and linux are basically same, both unix-based system. mac is just a polished unix, and linux
is a coarse one.:)

The more RAM you have, the longer it takes to boot up. It has 2GB, so it takes longer than a stock machine with only 512MB. An Ubuntu takes longer still, as it is booting from a CD-ROM.
