  • nice!!!!!!! mamma mia and wicked my favourite two musicals!!!!! i have actually seen both

  • she has an amazing voice... but her lower range needs more support.....

still an amazing interpretation of this great song

  • Yu can realy never over act unless you are out of character!

  • why the mamma mia set !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????

  • Ya that's the first thing I thought hahahaha.

  • She does the Shoshana Style of taking the character on a full journey... From FULL CHILD TO FULL ADULT... i love her.. like ive thought before.. if the right choice comes along.. anyone can play elphaba...

  • who on earth is Brandi Chevonne Massey?

  • WTF wuts with the Mamma mia set???!???!???!

  • shut up

  • Have you seen her No Good Deed! It is one of the best I have ever heard. And there is a much better recording of her singing this song. Her Defying Gravity (not her first but any of the other performances) is amazing.

  • @moviefreak316 No Good Deed is a BEAR of a song to sing. Need a great voice! Great job!

  • I saw her twice as Elphaba, and LOVED her. This is a really great performance.

Oh, and on that "throughout Oz" note, she did that both times I saw her... I don't know, but I kinda liked it.

    :-)

  • that is one very interesting & brave outfit...black mini skirt, yellow leggings, pink boots.

somebody call staci & clint from What Not to Wear (in america).

  • Is she wearing...gumboots?

  • A bit too much... kinda like a psychotic Elphaba

  • i know some people may disagree, but i think the way she "talks" some of it instead of singing is just awesome . she sounds so into the song, and i think it means more listening to someone sing, if the person singing is into the song and feels the song . and brandi totally does this song justice because she's so into it . so great job in my opinion . (:

  • shes doing it like its done on the broadway/westend.. so its them who should get the credit for this

  • woww really goood

  • what's with the "throughout oz" bit?

  • She's really great.

  • HAHA! Ya i was wondering about the mamma mia thing too!

  • why do they have the mamma mia set instead of the wicked set?????

  • YEA???!

  • because the concert was done at the theatre where they do mamma mia.

  • thats my cousin

  • is she your cousin ur related to Kyle Massey and his Brother

  • yes.... I guess if I'm related to her. Duh!

  • thats cool

  • I know Her!!!

  • i like her a lot but she uses a lot of edens riffs exactly

  • whats the mamma mia stage for?

  • yeah i know whats up with the back ground

  • why is she on the mama mia stage? LOL

  • I like Kerry Ellis better =) check out her singing!!!!!

  • wow there's a lot of idina in that performance, my gosh

and WOW to thevocals around 3:40

  • was she drunk? lol, she seems giggly and uncoordianted. still great tho ^_^

  • amazing........

  • shed be better as galinda, i think. good voice tho.

  • an actress that is original like most of the others dont need to take anything from any other actresses, they makeit there own and she doesnt. sorry

  • she took things from all other actresses who have played elphie and she isnt original at all. i can hear idina EDEN and def julia in that performance

  • most of them do that

  • but isnt that we she's an understudy and not the actual lead?

  • Love her.

  • If you listen to the lyrics, there actually is a "I-can't-contain-myself" excitement to this song, and I think this performance was spot on.

  • I agree. This song is about Elphaba being overwhelmed, excited and hopeful. Elphaba's dream is to meet the wizard and she just found out that it is very possible. Brandi is giggly, and overly excited.. just like Elphaba should be. And listen to her vocals! My god, she can sing! There is nothing wrong with this performance, she did everything right.

  • ye she is fantastic brings her own elphie too life. maybe a little bit to much squealing but i mean i loved it

  • I like her acting, her character reminds me of a really unpolished Julia Murney. Very gawky.

  • The vocals are good but the acting is just obnoxious. Elphaba is supposed to be EXCITED but definitely not so over-the-top that she's squealing.

  • Have you seen Julia Murney? She does it ALOT.

  • unnecessary screaming at parts, good, i know she's supposed to be excited but not annoyingly-over-obnoxiously though

  • WOW! Brandi sounds a lot like Caissie Levy in the Los Angles production. Caissie, in my opinion is the best Elphaba. Vocally unchallenged, and what a performer. But I also like Brandi, they have the same gusto for playing this role. Just plain awesome!!!

  • Idk if I'm the only one, but I actually heard some like, Avenue Q sounding stuff in it ? Like, she should be cast as Kate Monster.. Ugh, idk. Any other thoughts ? Haha

  • OMG. You're right. I heard it too.

  • I think she is amazing....she brings a totally different sound to the role, which is great.

  • omfg that music isz soo annoyinnggg!!!

  • Ok, I viewed this , and I see no problems at all, if its about the over-estetic thing, she's supposed to do that, she's in character. In all She executed it beautifully, though I feel she was holding back a little. Go Brandi!!!!

  • what is this?????

  • Don't sleep on Brandi she is amazing! She's now in "THE COLOR PURPLE" and she really showcases her voice in the song "I'm Here". She's the standby for Nettie and Celie.

  • ooof this is rough

    pretty bad

  • ok........

  • LOL...you could so tell the stage is Mamma Mia..

She has a terrific voice for this song.

  • through out oz!

  • gud

  • I think that vocally, this is one of the best renditions of this song that I have heard. She has a BEAUTIFUL voice.

  • maybe a little bit overacting... but beautiful voice

  • I loved the

Things ive never felt, it reminds me of edens

and i love her AND IIII

  • Somebody Post Her Good Defying Gravity And Keep It There!

  • people..she is great....she may not be perfect but shes great..:)

  • i thought she was incredible! =D

  • "Throughout oz" WTF WAS THAT!?!!

  • All of the throughout oz's are freaked out!

  • very good i loved it.

a little shakey on "and ill stand there with the wizard"

    but other than that amazing

    excellent

i love your spirit. u have excellent stage precence.

  • Nice voice, overacting. I'm not to familiar with this one, who did she understudy for, what cast?

  • isn't that the scene from MAMMA MIA?

  • NO it's from Wicked!!!!!! GAWD!

  • you spelled God incorrectly

    HAHAH loser

  • I went to AMDA with her she's awsome , and a SUPER nice person .....some people have alll the luck!

  • Wow that was great!!!! Your little twists at the ended were cool!! You do excentuate ur "R's" a little bit but other than that you rock!!!!!

  • I don't think she needs adivce... she's been on broadway.

  • wow! dat's all i can say

  • Her voice reminds me of mary j blige at some points!!

  • Shes Amazing!!

  • "Throughout Oz" OMG "Things I've never felt" amazing

  • Hey.... That's the Mamma Mia set!

    Yay Mamma Mia!

  • Great Voice!!! maybe overacted a bit, but then..everybody is a critic :)

  • When She Hits The High Notes, It The Video That Is Making Her Sound "Nassily."

  • I like her voice, but her character bothers me. She's too giddy, even for happy Elphaba.

  • It makes the character development even more dramatic though. She gets very pissed off in defying gravity.

  • I like it. It reminds me more of Maria Eberline's character. This is kind of like her dream mode. If you wanted something really bad and got the chance to do so, wouldnt you be happy? and then when she gets pissed in defying gravity, it makes it stronger for the character and the audience..just a thought. :)

  • ese es el decorado de Mamma Mía! de Madrid!!!!!!

  • Well I'll say this much... she's definitely an alto. She sounds good on the lower parts (although she's trying too hard to mimic idina instead of making it her own,) but when she gets to the higher range, there's a...shall i say... nasily sound that comes out. i'm sorry, but that made me stop the vid before the second verse...

  • I believe the correct term for ANY Elphaba is Mezzo-Soprano Belter... the term Alto is rarely used in Musical Theatre... or classical music even. Alto's have a VERY low range, very close to tenors. Just saying :)

  • sorry, I've been in music for a while, but I can't say I'm familiar with the female voice, I'm just calling it as I hear it in the simplest terms possible. Basically her low range is amazing, but when she goes higher it gets a nasily sound to it (yes i'm aware that its not her nose making that tone, again, simplest terms...)

Thanks for the info though. Good to know about who i'm singing with going into music theatre. :)

  • ya im sure...i bet she is trying to be exactly like idina - sry but i htink your wrong...everyone i know who plays elephaba WANTS to put something that is them into the show - thats a no brainer - infact how about u see if u can even become a understudy in wicked

  • Wow!!!! Shes soooo good!!!! She sounds alot like Idina!!!

  • Who cares if she sounds like Idina? Although I love Idina, I don't think we should compare people to her. I think she sounds like herself. And thats just fine.

  • Brandi kicks ass

  • geez guys, see if any of you do better. She's amazing... I still like Edina (sp?) but still.. this is great!

  • idina.

  • kay, thanks...heh.

  • Yeah she is good! Also you spell it "Idina"

  • lol seriously, how can you people be so negative? shes obviously done her person and its much better than average. id pay to see it any day :) x

  • i really wish she'd stop gasping. and she has pitch issues

  • Maybe she was trying to imitate Idina.

  • Just so you people know... when a show has been running awhile, the casting agent really is looking for a clone vocally. Brandi is amazing, i went to school with her, and i have never heard her sing like this. She sang the way they wanted, and landed the job, none of you are even close.

  • If that's true, where the HELL did they get Julia Murney?? LOL! that's not a bash on her of course, she just (in my Opinion) sound NOTHING like any other Elphies.

  • I think that that is one of Julia's strong points: Not sounding like the other Elphies. She is one of the only Elphies I've seen make the character truly their own.

  • Her interpretation is one of the best, I just don't think she can act it very well. The way she acptures Elphaba's hopefulness here then goes on to just explode in DG is amazing.

  • she drives me bonkers. she's so annoying. that cracking thing drives me nuts. saycon was a better stand-by.

  • I like her, but i dont think this is her strongest performance, i do think peoples comments are harsh.

By this performance she isnt a leading lady however

  • gosh her voice is annoying in this. o-o; but she does sing better than me, so i should shutup.. XD

  • very off pitch at some points...she has the idea though

  • um.... she was on broadway (standby) she is good, but i didn't really like the singing style

  • It's good to hear she goes on to better things, the Idina Menzel Show doesn't further anyone's career.

  • the idina menzel show!?

  • kind of obnoxious

  • That is the set of mamma mia! why is she on the mamma mia set?

  • that set looks like the mamma mia set (at least the one in australia)

  • that was shit. good vocals, i guess, but all her spoken diolgue stuffed it. What's with the with all the extra speaking where it never was better.

  • I think she should trying to find a few more lines to speak. lol

  • Her characterisation and interpretation of the role are really good. She doesn't act it out perfectly, but she knows the depth of the character she's playing and is very multi-dimensional.

  • She's definitely improving. I remember watching videos and thinking "God, I can't believe this girl gets paid to screw up this show" but seriously-- she's really grown in this role.

  • I think she rocks. Elphaba's supposed to be extremely happy in hopes that all of her dreams could finally be coming true.

  • She was pretty good. The singing was a bit pitchy.

  • what the hell is she wearing?

  • I've never really cared for her until i saw this, I like that shows so overwhelmed because she's finally having something good happen to her

  • she just proved why she has always been understudy

  • LMAO!

  • This isn't that bad but she is suppose to sound like Eden because that is who she understudied for and they want understudies to sound like the main one. Just watch early performances of Sho when she was an understudy and she sounds like Idina.

  • I kind of like the spasticness. She's been put down all of her life, and then all of a sudden she's told she could be really successful. You'd be spastic and crazy-like too. I agree she's a little nasal, but some people work that. She definitely does.

  • Brandi could own anyones ass at singing these days though. Did anyone happen to see her in Wicked in december?

  • why is she on the Mamma Mia set?

  • People love to criticize Idina, Shoshanna, Eden etc. and I've realized that most of Wicked just records HORRIBLY.You see these women live and you're like HOLY GOD THAT WAS INCREDIBLE because you're blown away by the sheer vocal power and the resonance in a live setting. Brandi Chavonne Massey is no exception to this rule. So forgive a few flat notes on a recording(even a live one like this)- come back to me when you get her job and THEN you can say something.

  • Finally someone who has some sense. I totally agree with you. People love to look at these videos and criticize every little thing about the person's performance, but the reality is these people are no where near qualified to criticise these PROFESSIONALS with extensive training. I don't care if you are a music student or voice teacher or whatever, unless you have performed on broadway, you cannot possibly know as much as these ladies do. THE END.

  • i totally agree, has n e one heard her riff at the end of defying gravity??? she rocks my face off!

  • omg that riff makes me shiver everytime she is amazing!

  • isn't that the set for mama mia?

  • she sounds kinda like idina

  • i thought she was really good, not the best but still really good. what is she wearing though?? lol and i didn't really like her "throughout Oz" it wos pretty annoying, and yeah i agree that she seemed to be copying Eden with her "things I've never felt". but still a pretty good performance :)

  • yes indeed! what is she wearing???

i didn't like the "hand in hand" sounded very...flat

she really makes it a VERY american Elphaba, she has her own style, which is good!

  • does anyone else notice that she sang allt he exact same runs as eden espinosa...lol...i feel like she tried to replicate it...and it wasnt as perfect as eden

  • Earlier performance, her later ones showcase her singing better.

  • Sounds very nasily, I think there are many reasons why she never got the main-role or bumped up from u/s. She needs alot of work.

  • THOSE BOOTS ARE HIDIOUS! her singing is great!

  • I'm a voice performance and music ed major, and listening to her sing is physically painful. Not that she sounds bad, its just the placement of her sound is so far forward in her throat that I can feel it. If she would just take better breaths and support her sound from the diaphragm, her singing would be much more impressive.

  • Before I read the details of the video, I was like "Why is she on the Mamma Mia set?" lol..

  • I think you have to take into account that she's holding a microphone, so her expressions are going to be a little hindered. Plus, I think she's in character here. I mean, at this point, Elphaba's young (which explains the "high school"ish sound)and insecure, which explains the introvert behavior. At least, that's my take.

  • that "feeling things ive never felt" was SOOO good!!!!

  • i think she is amazing, but i cant get passed the pink boots and yellow leggins. LOL ? was this a costume?

  • this is when you see singing is NOT enough

  • its sad cuz she has a really gud voice, but it seems she's trying too hard here..

  • I think you were great but I think that you shouldn't have taken such breath breaths between each word almost. I also think that when you said "no!" you went a little too high.

  • ehm..do u kno that she isnt an amateur? lol! she's an actual understudy 4 elphaba! so your advice isnt going anywhere..lol!

  • Once again, I dont care if she IS the Elphaba, she needs to learn what a diaphram is and she needs to use it. She is trying much MUCH too hard and needs to take it slower. Thats my opinion at least.

  • obviously they didnt care for her TO much, they didnt even take the time to take down the set and put up Wicked's. Poor Brandi, so un-appreciated..well sortof.

  • i agree, she doesn't have a lot of stage presence. quite mediocre

  • i kind of felt like i was watching a high school performance. now don't dog on me-- i don't know brandi other then this video, so i'm not sure how she sounds other than this, but to me, it was just mediocre.

come to hawaii- we have some talent here that will be (and is currently) on broadway.

  • SHe has a great voice and everything but I can see why she's an understudy though... Besides I don't really like her style. She gets a little bit too excited in too many parts.

  • &&&That was directed as a reply to someone but I guess

    I did something wrong. haha.

  • Ahh this is so cool. When this was being filmed, I was seeing Wicked for my second time in Chicago! :D

    I love Brandi, she's amazing.

  • She's SO good. I love her!

  • Why is she perfroming the Wizard and I in front of what appears to be the set from Mamma Mia?

  • I love her. In october in connecticut there was this thing at foxwoods casino where Gregory mcgiure (sp?) the authore of WICKED and son of a witch he came to the casino and had a book singning for son of a witch and Brandi performed the wizard And I there too i was in the FRONT ROW and she was awesome i went with my best friend Jayde. we love WICKED. neways yea Brandi is amazing i love her.

  • I don't want to start anything...BUT, Saycon is the STANDBY and Brandi is the understudy.

This music is just beneath Brandi's voice. She doesn't even SOUND like this when she normally sings. I LOVE Wicked but I think Brandi has a better groove than what this shows. Brandi is amazing.

  • first of all, Brandi Chavonne Massey is not the Understudy on Broadway thats another black girl named Saycon Sengbloh (Yes there are two black understudies for Elphaba)Brandi's Ok but Saycon is way better, shes on of the best Elphaba's, check out her clips. I hope Saycon comes ands takes over for Kristy Kates in Chicago, seeing that Kates is leaving on December 10th. Hell we're already on our 4th G(a)lina, we just got a new one.

  • Saycon is the standby. Brandi is the understudy, don't get them confused.

P.S. Their is a reason Brandi is just the understudy. Since the show has a standby, the understudy rarely goes on.

  • haha, I enjoy the fact that you added the (a). I wonder how many people caught that.

  • HOLY SHIT IS SHE PREGNENT? I see a bumb, it could be just her dress bunching up but she seems preg!

  • looks like the set from mamma mia in the background. great vocal talent!

  • ahh nevermind.. it said that in the desciption... my bad.... but still, shes really good :D

  • i so recognized that set right away

  • There is a little thing called over acting and she's a pro at it

  • Don't hate! She kicked ass on the song (vocally/acting) on the random 'mamma mia' set, with no makeup, a hand held microphone, and what sounds like a karaoke/click track! YOU GO BRANDI GIRL!

  • i wasnt at all bashing her vocal talent...ive seen the girl and she was incredible...

  • yeah. I love all the Elphaba's but every one of them have there moments. Brandi does have moments when she over acts but still she is wonderful

  • who is Brandi Chavonne Massey?

  • she is a standby as elphaba for wicked

  • She is the understudy on broadway (for elphaba)
