Sad how some people think America is so righteous and flawless. It takes over countries, destroys civilian homes in other countries, steal funding from other countries, refuses to help the most poverse countries in the world, wages war on countries, and refuses people many services like unbiased education and the ability to change their government through protesting. (You can protest in America, but it doesn't change anything unless it has a huge fraction of the people getting up and helping.)
This video raises an interesting point about what the "culture" of America is supposed to be. As far as I am concerned, the United States doesn't have a national cultural identity... instead, we are a culture of individuals who create our own culture from whatever elements we choose, and that is the way I think it SHOULD be. Too many people get up in arms about "protecting American culture," but "protecting" old mores would defeat the purpose of being a nation of non-conformists.
All those ethnic stereotypes (the buck-toothed Chinese) in his "graphic novel" are accepted, simply because he’s Chinese in appearance and his parents are immigrants.
Ask yourself whether you would tolerate this kind of racism if he had had another ethnic background than Chinese ...
I have to say, hands down, this is the BEST comic book on being East Asian born in a western country. The coming of age story and acceptance is great. Gene Yang looks like a geeky version of Donnie Yen, and thats a compliment by the way.
This is America - ONE land consisting of immigrants, coming together WITH their heritages but STILL loving their cultures. It makes USA one of the best countries in the world precisely because of the cultural diversity, the freedom of speech and the bond everyone shares as an American.
The genius of America lies in its capacity to forge a single nation from peoples of remarkably diverse racial, religious, and ethic origins....The American identity will never be fixed and final; it will always be in the making
your parents are your culture...dont u understand when u get to america they take away your history they take away your language they take away your culture....
Some people are so intent on hating America they will twist anything set of facts about it, even the good aspects of the culture around in order to make the country out to be the villain in any circumstance.
