  • So directors who are pussies and don't wanna look like morons use this name? Man grow some balls! No one is perfect.

  • I've read that there are some new pseudonyms that have been approved of by the Director's Guild since Alan Smithee was discontinued in 2000, and therefore are in use right now when the actual director wants to disown a movie, but for obvious reasons the movie industry isn't telling everyone what they are. It will be interesting for all of us movie fans in the coming years to try to figure out what they are!

  • what is the film at 0:09 to 0:28

  • Was that Bruce Campbell at 0:23? O;

  • @tarrantinoFann - Nope

  • I always wondered what a dude actually named Alan Smithee who loved cinema would feel about the choice name given to hack movies lol...He'd probably kill himself, er, change his name I mean :)

  • it was in QI

  • I love Alan Smithee films!

  • alan smithee doesnt exist, its an anagram of the words "the alias man" created in 1967 for the directors who doesnt like his job`s, and keep anonymous

  • duh

  • Actually Alan Smithee is used by directors who wants to disown a bad film but the name has discontinued in 2000.

  • "the alias man" doesn't anagram to alan smithee though, it anagrams to Alan Smithe. You are short one "e".

  • @NortonFord it's "the alias men"

  • It's not an anagram. It began as a modification of "Al Smith" but became too well-known outside the movie industry, and was discontinued in 2000.

  • which explains why all of his movies blow... fuckin hellraiser in cyberspace and whatnot.

  • i need to meet this alan smithee

  • So this movies basically consist in people stabbing things on others peoples chest.

  • Alan Smithee is the man.

  • Putting the name "Alan Smithee" on your film is basically the same with leaving a child on a stranger's doorstep.

  • Yep. If a director needs to make a house or boat payment, they'll take a crap job for the check and then list themselves as Alan Smithee in the credits to keep the work off their resume. Kinda the same thing as mainstream authors that write "romance" novels when they're not working on a real project. A lot of SciFi writers in the 70's and 80's were also writing "romance" novels. :-D

  • Best and the correct answer (it also "allowed" directors to work scab and to try shit that just might stick)
