@gwugluud thats BS, the sd-1 actually sounds good used as a boost infront of a lot of amps. I use one in front of my jcm800 and its actually pretty awesome

Anyway nice demo. I sorta recently bought the new MA50w combo. seriously high gain. If u want more gain than that (which is just pure madness) then may I recommend a DSL or if u got a lot of money on ya a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier and then u can attempt getting more gain out of that with a pedal and totally screwing up your tone. Gd luck. NOT!
I have a 2466 half stack and I want more gain. I want to trade up for a 5150 III w/ matching cab. If I keep it any ideas for hair LA hair metal gain eg. ratt dokken?
then smack the front with a good boost such as a Boss SD-1(the yellow one) Level maxed or atleast pretty high, tone at noon, gain low like 9:00 or less.
This is an awesome amp. It has a bad rep because you have to know how to use it. One you understand how to tweek it (unlike almost all other amps) then its a joy, if you don't figure it out it will sound like doodoo. The 2 preamp controls are what really shapes the sound and distortion, the BMT tweek the details of the sound.
Just use the setting I listed near the bottom of the page. I typically don't push the Mid Boost in anymore. Just use a good OD pedal and you should be fine.
There really isn't a clean and gain channel. There are two different Dynamic ranges. The Low Dynamic range is like a JTM45. The high dynamic range is a modded Plexi tone but with a unique crunch. I always boost the high dynamic range.
Nice! These vintage moderns are the best sounding marshall since the JTM60's and JTM30's (which noone bought for some stupid reason hence their discontinuance) As to the above statements. I have owned a Peavey 5150 for some 15 years and I loved it. It is an original amp. However I never thought it delivered the Eddie Van Halen sound. I always thought that was strange. The new EVH 5150 3 amp delivers THE Eddie Van Halen tone like the early albums.

Get an EVH 5150 iii. You can cover almost all Slashs songs on channel 2 and the ones that are really heavy channel 3 can get. Thats just my opinion cause the Vintage Modern has what lie 2 channels? But there isnt and EQ for each one. The EVH has 3 seperate EQ sections, one for each channel. Marshall is poorly made and uses cheap plastic. But if HAVE to have that tone or a muddy Marshall get the DSL100 or whatever cause every marshall sounds the same and that is the cheapest.
wow your dump the evhiii is the biggest peace of shit, Its one of the few amps i could litterly destroy with one punch. and is all fucking uper midrange, no bottom end growl. and dont say somethings good because its got van halens name on it, he hasnt had good tone in over 10 years.

Wow with a Marshall you have to have a boost pedal. So lets go spend 2500 dollars on an amp and then have to go spend another 100 on a pedal and then have to carry it with you everywhere. But also by the way Eddie's tone is beast now that he doesn't use peaveys and hot rodded marshalls anymore. He has his own guitar that is so badass and his amp which is basically a hot rodded marshall sounding amp like he used to have in the 80's. Marshall is definately not the best brand of amps. Everyone buys a Marshall the modifies it so you cant say all the famous people use them.
if you think and new evh amp sounds anything like a boosted or modded marshall, that leads me to belive you know nothing about marshalls b/c they couldnt sound more different. and this is evhs worst tone hes ever had.
marshall rocks fender sucks cock at anything with gain, they should stick with guitars and you should stick to playing video games like most 10 year olds.
Just about every classic rock beast on the planet.
Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page (with Led Zeppelin), Angus Young, Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton (during Cream), Eddie Van Halen (but he's modded, so i guess that doesn't count) to name a few.
Marshalls are great, and just because an amp needs a boost pedal doesn't make it bad. You said yourself that Fenders are #1 and I can't think of one tube Fender that doesn't need a boost pedal.
And i think EVH's tone was way better in the Marshall days.
Slash, Wylde, Rhoads, Kerry all have theres modded and the other people i dont really care about but theres are modded too. And by the way Kirk Hammett Uses RANDALL just to let you know dumbfuck. Do some research before you post a bunch of shit that isnt true.
A bunch of shit that isn't true? Well pardon me for not knowing Kirk uses Randall now. Yeah, that's "a BUNCH of shit that isn't true."
And Kirk did use Marshalls in the 80s. Slash never modded his Marshalls, he plugged them straight in. The only one that was modded was the one he rented for the recording of Appetite.
Lots of people mod their Marshalls, but they're still considered the best and are the most reliable. Slash always talks about how his Marshalls have survived decades of touring.
actually, both kirk and james used marshalls on metallica's first 2 albums, so, yeah. whoever said that kirk hammett uses marshalls, you're KINDA right, and whoever said that he doesn't, you're also KINDA right.
o and btw ur right about the slash thing. i read his book and he talks about how he never modded his marshalls, but he did rent one for the appitiete record and it was modded. so that part u said was right, but not about the kirk thing
Hammett used Marshalls back in the good old days of Metallica (Ride the Lightning, Kill Em All) . You know, back when his tone was amazing. Get my point?
omg you stubborn tard, kirk used marshalls on killem all, ride the lightning, and master of puppets. and started touring with mesa during puppets tour. and its hard to get a 5150 3 because there not that wanted. the more people order the more there are.
I have played it at my same ash. its a good amp, it sounds differnent from any other amp ive played. Im not crazy about it tho id buy a different amp for 1600. and the amps been siting there for months.
its built way better than a standard marshall. all the side grips are metal unlike marshall, 3 individual channels. seperate tubes for each channel. the volume can go really low if wanted. its not as bad of an amp as you think. fender did a good job on it. i just dont really like marshalls. the only one i have played that i liked was the zakk wylde micro stack haha and thats not even tube. for some reason i like it. :P
have you even played a 5150 3. the outer shell is very thin, if you droped it, the outer shell would break. its a good sounding amp, but its not my favorite,
I own one. And it wouldnt break. Look who designed it? Eddie has been known to push everything to the limit and this thing is built like a tank. And yes while i was searching for a new tube amp i played to jcm 800, jvm410h, dsl100, and the vintage modern. I wasnt too impressed with any of them. the EVH was everything i was looking for. it has 3 seperate channels, nice tube sound, transparent effects loop, and a lot of gain.
You clearly haven't read any real info about Van Halen.. he still prefers his old SLP-head that he used to record VH-1, but sure, you go believe that all the guitarist uses the gear they endorse... ;)
drewpontow is right, Kirk Used Marshall amps 'til the Recording of ....And justice for all.. The tones that you hear on Kill em All is pure marshall (at least the dirty tones) amps.. James recorded all the rythm tracks, and kirk also used a tubescreamer for the solos.. James also used a tubescreamer to drive the amps even harder in the studio until he got his Mesas for the ...and justice album.
Yet all your favorite bands use them(Unmodified that is.)..
George Lynch, Judas Priest, Zakk Wylde, Doug Aldrich, Scorpions etc.. tough break for you to dislike those amps so much, but having all your favorite guitarists playing them. :/
or really? lynch uses randall, priest uses engl and small miked up practice amps, wylde uses a boost in front of the amp, aldrich uses marshall, scorpions use custom amps. so no not all my favorite guitarists use them. and they only used them in the old days because that was the only thing around
George Lynch is sponsored by Randall, but listen to all of his GOOD records like BFTA, there its a purple Marshall 1959SLP(And he still uses them, he only promotes Randall basically.).
Judas Priest has always used Marshalls before, and they sure did when i saw them in March.
Scorpions do use Marshalls, live they sometimes use ENGLS and other amp brands though(The venues rent their gear.).
Because that was the only thing around? How bout Engl, MesaBoogie, Peavey, Randall, Bogner, Layney & Hiwatt?
YOUR THE DUMB FUCK the evh 3 is used by EVERYONE TODAY. Most bands use it today and even put it in there videos. All the american idol people use evh 5150 3's, so many scremo bands use it its not even funny and like i said THEY PUT THE AMP IN THERE VIDEOS! Last year tons of people used them at warped tour. That amp is truly amazing and you prbly just suck and dont no how to dial in good eq. Go fucken die
u can get a good randy roahds sound on this amp with body and detail at 3'o clock presence 10 treble 12'0 clock middle 10 and volume at 4 and bass at 11'0 clock
Picked this up today and love it! All due to your clips man thanks a million! :) I also own a JVM 410h and a genuine mid 70's Plexi I had modded. I can protect my baby Plexi by storing it now. Running with a Marshall 1960 AV 412 with 12M Greenbacks and in front of the amp I boost it with a Majik Box Doug Aldrich Rocket Fuel and I use Les Pauls with EMG's and one with Suhr Passive Pickups. FX in the loop are an old Boss SE-70 and a pedalboard with Maxon/MXR Pedals. Try the Rocket Fuel. Thanks man
What do you think is great for randy rhoads or zakk wylde tone, the vm or jvm205? I really cant decide at all between the vm or jvm, i played the jvm but not the vm, somebody help me out here!
I had the JVM410 and the VM. The crunch channel on the JVM is pretty much the JCM800 tone. The VM is kinda like a jumpered Plexi with the KT66s and a PPIMV. I guess if you need versatility go with the JVM. Me I much prefer to boost the VM.
go with the jvm liek it says on a lot of reviews and such the jvm the more versitile amp you could get some metal out of this amp but not much trust me i have the VM and for what i like its perfect gnr acdc led zep all that stuff but for like metallica id go with the jvm but this is all just my opinion you decide for yourself
I am about to post a vid showing metal riffs however depending on what metal you want... jvm might be better.... this is more thrash metal like metallica's kill em' all and ride the lightning :-D
There are two gain controls "detail" for higher freq and "body" for lower, but it is designed to use the volume pot on the guitar to control the amount of gain
I'm actually looking for a Marshall to recreate the Yngwie-ish tone of my YJM strat with my DOD 308. It's between this VM and a DSL 50...any thoughts.
The riff at the beginning is The Rover by Led Zeppelin. The one at :35 is Hot for Teacher I think, definitely Van Halen and I'm not sure about the rest.
I know this is just a "You Tube" post, but your tones seem nicer than when I demo'd one in the store, what are your volume settings for this and the other clips of your Vintage Modern?
The Mid Boost function uses some of the same frequencies at the mid range knob and Body Knob. So to get really mean tone I suggest this... Used an SD-1, level cranked, gain low or off and tone knob at 1:00. Now to the amp... reverb off, Bass at noon or a little less, mid 10:30, treble 3:00, high dynamic range, mid boost in, detail at 4:00, body 8:30. Now these are at lower volume settings. If you can crank it you will probably take the mid boost out and re EQ everything. Have fun.

I own one. And it wouldnt break. Look who designed it? Eddie has been known to push everything to the limit and this thing is built like a tank. And yes while i was searching for a new tube amp i played to jcm 800, jvm410h, dsl100, and the vintage modern. I wasnt too impressed with any of them. the EVH was everything i was looking for. it has 3 seperate channels, nice tube sound, transparent effects loop, and a lot of gain.
gibsongod15 2 years ago
And what amp was Eddies favorite ever?
Hmm.. i thought it was an unmodified Marshall 1959SLP? ;)
And about Marshalls being unreliable, well, then you dont know shit.
Marshalls are renowned for their touring stability, in fact, thats why they got big!
Marshalls where unknown until Jimi Hendrix switched from his Fenders due to that they couldnt stand hard touring to Marshalls.
Name one all tube amp that is more reliable then the JCM800 and il give you the win in this argument.

the 5150 3
gibsongod15 2 years ago
You clearly haven't read any real info about Van Halen.. he still prefers his old SLP-head that he used to record VH-1, but sure, you go believe that all the guitarist uses the gear they endorse... ;)
notuern 2 years ago
why would he spend so much time devolping an amp to use when he wasnt even gonna use it? he could just put out shit and say he uses it but he doesnt
gibsongod15 2 years ago
jcm900 more reliable..hehe:D
just kiddin

thats not correct master of puppets zhe whole album was recorded on mesa mark II +
thefourhorseman 2 years ago
drewpontow is right, Kirk Used Marshall amps 'til the Recording of ....And justice for all..
RickyboyH 2 years ago
i still think marshall sucks. they always break and you have to mod them for them to sound any good.
gibsongod15 2 years ago
Yet all your favorite bands use them(Unmodified that is.)..
George Lynch, Judas Priest, Zakk Wylde, Doug Aldrich, Scorpions etc.. tough break for you to dislike those amps so much, but having all your favorite guitarists playing them. :/
notuern 2 years ago
or really? lynch uses randall, priest uses engl and small miked up practice amps, wylde uses a boost in front of the amp, aldrich uses marshall, scorpions use custom amps. so no not all my favorite guitarists use them. and they only used them in the old days because that was the only thing around
gibsongod15 2 years ago
George Lynch is sponsored by Randall, but listen to all of his GOOD records like BFTA, there its a purple Marshall 1959SLP(And he still uses them, he only promotes Randall basically.).
Judas Priest has always used Marshalls before, and they sure did when i saw them in March.
Scorpions do use Marshalls, live they sometimes use ENGLS and other amp brands though(The venues rent their gear.).
Because that was the only thing around? How bout Engl, MesaBoogie, Peavey, Randall, Bogner, Layney & Hiwatt?
notuern 2 years ago
matthias jabs uses custom amps built for him.
lynch uses randall and believe me he uses them. i have seen videos of him in his studio in recent years and he was using his randall.
priest uses ENGL amps.
gibsongod15 2 years ago
Priest use Marshall.

Fender hasn't made a good amp since the seventies
tylerisagirl1 1 month ago
YOUR THE DUMB FUCK the evh 3 is used by EVERYONE TODAY. Most bands use it today and even put it in there videos. All the american idol people use evh 5150 3's, so many scremo bands use it its not even funny and like i said THEY PUT THE AMP IN THERE VIDEOS! Last year tons of people used them at warped tour. That amp is truly amazing and you prbly just suck and dont no how to dial in good eq. Go fucken die
AssassinSteven 2 years ago
so what if a lot of people use them, more people still use the peavey 5150s then the 51503s.
and why the hell are you bringing american idol into this... 90% of the time they play pop music ..
and warp tour has got to be the lamest usa tour these days.
drewpontow 2 years ago
Whatever go die.
gibsongod15 2 years ago
Thats because its hard to get a 5150 3 and theres 6505s everywhere.

Thanks man

Your Amp sounds Amazing!!!
Have you played the JCM 2000 DSL? Also, does the effect loop work pretty well?
I dunno to get this or the JCM 2000...
Thanks!
rvolley04 2 years ago
I prefer the VM to the DSL but both are really nice.

I haved a JCM 2000 DSL 100 , now I have a Marshall Major 1974 and the DSL souns very better than this Vintage Modern ...

how's the jvm? give me the whole rundown
ARKITOOTHUS 2 years ago
The JVM does a lot well but I only used it to boost the crunch channel. I prefer the VM to the JVM
yngzaklynch 2 years ago
do you own all these amp?

What do you think is great for randy rhoads or zakk wylde tone, the vm or jvm205? I really cant decide at all between the vm or jvm, i played the jvm but not the vm, somebody help me out here!
dylaann1 3 years ago
I had the JVM410 and the VM. The crunch channel on the JVM is pretty much the JCM800 tone. The VM is kinda like a jumpered Plexi with the KT66s and a PPIMV. I guess if you need versatility go with the JVM. Me I much prefer to boost the VM.

just look at his wall of marshalls at his concerts
not vintagemoderns

He uses the MKII's live yes, but he has on several occasions admitted to loving the vintage modern.

if u just dimed the master and kept the volume low, how clean would it be?
bucknasty1148 3 years ago
this amp stays very clean at high vallumes however no tube amp stays perfectly clean past like 2 o'clock. just have to keep it on the first stage :-D
dougjwhalen 3 years ago
is this any good for metal or shoold i go with the jvm?
dlite95 3 years ago
go with the jvm liek it says on a lot of reviews and such the jvm the more versitile amp you could get some metal out of this amp but not much trust me i have the VM and for what i like its perfect gnr acdc led zep all that stuff but for like metallica id go with the jvm but this is all just my opinion you decide for yourself
thecrazyskateboarder 3 years ago
I am about to post a vid showing metal riffs however depending on what metal you want... jvm might be better.... this is more thrash metal like metallica's kill em' all and ride the lightning :-D

how does the gain work on this if there is no gain controle??
TheMJQ 3 years ago
There are two gain controls "detail" for higher freq and "body" for lower, but it is designed to use the volume pot on the guitar to control the amount of gain
Mustangman8998 3 years ago
thx.
TheMJQ 3 years ago
wow obviously you don't know shit about most amps, the preamp knob controls how much gain your amp throws out top end.
Dufanater 3 years ago
I'm actually looking for a Marshall to recreate the Yngwie-ish tone of my YJM strat with my DOD 308. It's between this VM and a DSL 50...any thoughts.
The tone kicks ass by the way!
shwalton 3 years ago
Yngwie Malmsteen uses a VM i think
joektsrs 3 years ago
Actually, Yngwie uses vintage MKII amps from the early 70's, but he has stated that he likes the Vintage Moderns best out of the new Marshalls.
SRVYJM 3 years ago
wow I didnt know the VM sounded so good. Everyone always bashes marshalls new amps.
jay31486 4 years ago
what cab r u using?
TheMJQ 4 years ago
At around 00:35, reminded me of "Stone Cold Crazy". Good song by Queen, later covered by Metallica.
Drillsback 4 years ago
i think it actually might be a riff from Van Halen II
19833891 3 years ago
I think it sounded alittle Judas Priest-esque.
Drillsback 3 years ago
The riff at the beginning is The Rover by Led Zeppelin. The one at :35 is Hot for Teacher I think, definitely Van Halen and I'm not sure about the rest.

It's Light up The Sky from Van Halen II.

I know this is just a "You Tube" post, but your tones seem nicer than when I demo'd one in the store, what are your volume settings for this and the other clips of your Vintage Modern?
Nice playing BTW...
Mujabar 4 years ago
The Mid Boost function uses some of the same frequencies at the mid range knob and Body Knob. So to get really mean tone I suggest this... Used an SD-1, level cranked, gain low or off and tone knob at 1:00. Now to the amp... reverb off, Bass at noon or a little less, mid 10:30, treble 3:00, high dynamic range, mid boost in, detail at 4:00, body 8:30. Now these are at lower volume settings. If you can crank it you will probably take the mid boost out and re EQ everything. Have fun.
yngzaklynch 4 years ago
May i ask what speakers you are using? Love the playing man, sounds like your havin' fun too!
