Thanks. Valuble info. I'm setting up a small budget biamped pa system for our band. Have two pwr amps 600w (subs) & 300w (midhighs), a mono crossover, Mackie 16 ch. mixer board, an old peavey effects rack unit w/ delay, 2 Peavy mid-high towers w/ 4 12s and a Horn and 2 Peavey 18" subs. Was wondering if you could explain how to do this in a mono 2-way situation rather than in stereo. I think the Peavey mid-high towers have a passive crossover already built into them, this shouldn't matter right?
J, seriously, anytime i am confused about something while i am looking around on youtube, i end up on your channel, and i instantly know how to fix my problems! Thanks mate!

@kindellkindell Probably looking at about 4 amps for subs, and possible one big one or two smaller ones for the tops. Need specs and power/impedance ratings

The mid top (full range speakers) look big, by running their signal through the mid top active crossover U will be loosing some potential bass, i would keep mid top speakers smaller than 10" otherwise run them as full range and use an eq if you need to. If U filter out the bass with the active xover in such big speakers Ur loosing lots of good mid bass. Ideally what U should be telling people is that they want smaller full range or separate component system speakers to go with an active xover.
the title refers to an "active" crossover, although true multiway systems dont use passive X-Overs. The speaker level signal goes direct to the terminals on the woofer/driver (at least for subs anyway). For bi-amped top/mid cabs, four conductor cable is used with speakon NL-4MP installed in the cabinet. 2 pairs carry mid, 2 pairs carry top signal. No passive X-Overs installed.
you can use one 2 way stereo crossover and link the two high-mid amps. maybe the cheapest way.
or you also use some stuff like the driverack pa, which gives you more freedom and makes it easier for you to adjust features like crossover frequency, which can be set digitally at e.g. exact 80Hz and with butterworth 6/12/18/24/48dB or linkwitz-riley 24/48dB mode which can't be fit that perfect with a analog knob. but it's not that cheap.
you can run 3 way mono, so you need 2 crossovers. a all in one solution which i can recommend is the dbx driverack pa or pa+. this is a mixed corssover, delay, limiter, equalizer, limiter, etc.
it can handle up to 6 speakers (6 outputs), configurable as a 3-way stereo solution.
there are some possibilities but with limitations.
i won't suggest you them in detail because i'd suggest you to buy a second amplifier, which can be bridged to get the power, so it doesn't cost so much.
if you want, send me a pm with you specifications of your sub (ohms, rms watts) and your budget and i'll make you some suggestions.
i would also send you a solution for 2 tops & 1sub on 1 amp via pm, but i won't paste it here, because this is shity stuff and not to be recommended.
Hey I have a Qsc RMX 2450, im using two yamaha s115 monitors in my mobile setup. If i wanted to add a sub would i put the monitors on one channel and put them on parallel inputs and dedicate the second channel to the sub? thanks!
I only have a Master and REC output on the back of my mixer. they ae both RCA output types. My question is - "How do I connect my TWO active speakers to the ONE master output? use RCA splitters?
Hey this is sweet you have some great vids , i am new to this stuff an just have some simple questions i am buying a gift for my friend's birthday he has 4 eminence Beta 10' with 4 selenium D250 drivers he needs a powerful amplifier my budget is about $300 USD , I have the choice of a Technical Pro L4Z4001 this is a 4ch amp with 660 W @ 4 ohm x 4 and a Europower 2500 I think is like 750 @ 4 ohm x 2 so what do u recommended ? and can you tell me which amp has more power ?
the europower 2500 has more power but you can only plug 4 speakers the technical pro has less power but you can plug 8 speakers. its your choice.. i would prefer the technical pro because if you plug 8 good speakers with many watts something like 400 watts you are going to have 2400 watts. But you said he has 4 speakers well i think that technical pro is also good for 4 speakers because he is going to have 1600 watt my friend!! i think its good.. ;)

Just to 2nd that information, yes, everytime you add +3dB of volume, you have to double your power. +1 dB minimum required to tell the volume has been increased in your living room. However, +3 dB is the minimum required to notice an increase in volume in at a real world gig. Doesn't sound like much, but if you consider the first part, that +3dB requires double the power, then coupling your subs is worth it to achieve the same volume at HALF the power.
Also, again, since bass is non-directional, you do not have to place your subs between your tops. If you have a good wall to load against, or best, a corner, you can get additional gain by firing your subs into the wall/corner. With horns, you can gain as much as +12 dB in ideal conditions, but you need to know how to properly load into wall/corner, so research before you try it.

If you have active speaker you should get a digital processor for the new crossovers curves..
The DSP (digital processing unit) can give you stereo channels and sub channels...
OR
You can use the left channel to your sub if you have a passive system, since the left channel is commonly used for mono..

poor advice bro, you want amps to be around or just above the rms and deffo not above the peak. you dont want to blow anything!
just match the speaker resistance (in ohms) to the amps ones - look at some of ellaskins other vids for more ingo.
harrowrudeboy 3 years ago
oh yeah, forgt to say that with the peak...thanks for correcting me
but, couldn't i simply take an amplifier that has twice the power and simply turn it half up?
brietzmann 3 years ago
its cool, but you should always turn your amps up full then back a tiny bit. then control the volume using your mixer.
the way to tell ur amp is being overpowered is to listen for distortion through the speakers. if u hear crackling then turn ur mixer volume down a bit

ok thanks for the advice!
