For the record: This recording of Kogan is not true. It casts a false shadow on Mr Kogan. This recording is running faster than recorded, thus changing the key of the work, and the speed of everything, including the vibrato which brings so much life to a work. It is untrue and unfair. If this were VSO's to the proper key, it would be fair to judge. It is not.
Thank goodness someone else posted this!!! Kogan learned most of this before he had the music because he was unable to get it--but I think it makes the phrasing and expressiveness absolutely his--it's such a marvelous interpretation I don't know that I will ever enjoy another as much as this one, especially after knowing how much he wanted to play it and how much he worked on it.
this is my favorite thing that Kogan recorded. As I touched on below, I think his extreme desire to play it and not having the music and having to work through it made it almost like a child to him
it's like paganini's first concerto: he wrote it in another key for the solo violing than for the orchestra. Kogan tuned his violin a half-step higher so he heard other notes then he played what makes it another bit harder to play
True Paganini wrote the #1 concerto for E flat. But this is just a bad tape - which somehow sounds a little more than a quarter tone higher. Listen to Kogan's other recording of this on Youtube. The fact remains- virtuosity at the highest level.
I made a version of this from the Kogan: Interpretations DVD source, which has better picture quality and re-encoded it at a slower speed which sounds more correct. I'm not sure if it can be posted on YT without getting in trouble though, as I don't see any other clips from that DVD posted.
Magnificent account of Wachsmann's arrangement of Bizet's tunes played superbly by Kogan. This is also a testament to George Bizet's genius. If you get a chance you may want to seek out Rodion Shchedrin's Carmen Ballet too (with Rozhdestvensky conducting). Thanks again to EspaceArtPluriel for posting this rendition.
the beginning sounds in B-dur, instead of A.

I think this is a better rendition of the Opera than Sarasates Carmen Fantasy. It starts better and sounds more epic.

Certified Intergalactic! Kogan had the hands of Paganini. 8:13-9:11

Just wondering; did Kogan play the beginning a whole key higher than usual??? Maybe I'm wrong...?
loveplayingviolin 2 years ago
no, you're right. it's a half-step higher
violin1158 2 years ago
Did he transcribe it the way, or is it just another version??
