Imagine how much cleaner our air, how much healthier we'd be, and safer the streets would be if more NY'ers and other cities in general chose to get on a bike instead of a car.
I can't see cycling expanding more than as is in most of current US cities due to amount of congestion and lack of road space to make those large bike lanes. But good job for Copenhagen.
I find it outrageous that the people who walk, bike or passing on. Have to do it surrounded by polluting cars and murderers. Breathing poisoned air poisonous. It is uncivil. Political murderers. Commit offenses against public health.
@Mazhify I'm from the UK and been in Denmark 3 years now. DO NOT come here. It's one of the most openly racist places an immigrant can come to. Foreigners from any country are not welcome here and they'll very quick make you aware of it. Go anywhere except here.
absolutely love it, colorful bikes, clothes, streets, stores, and people. cycling in the summer and winter having a fresh breeze and a good workout! wonderful
We Danes have great options for giving peace and care for the world, i care about my country even though we have a slight lack in the policy department, but i do not go around and act like an idiot abroad.
Yes it is good that many people use's the bike's, but learn how to respect rules and others around you too. That is the key to success no less. Take care for the love and welfare!
Copenhagen is not that large, and you can easily get around on a bike. It is actually faster than using public transportation, and finding parking spaces for cars is a pain. Riding a bike is just the obvious thing to do.
@FesterBable "faster than using public transportation,"? Let's have a race from Amager across the city. You take your bike and I'll take the metro and we'll see who gets there first.
Lets make that race across Jagtvej - Falkoner Alle during day time.
Your city challenge only works if you can rely on a single mode of transport (i.e. the metro), and if you start right next to said mode of transportation. The minute you need to add in a bus, the bike wins. The minute you need to walk to or from the metro for several minutes, the bike wins again.
@ptuku This isn't about who wins! You are given several examples of things that work, now take a test area in your own city and implement it! Show the people there that it works, first by making illegal bicycle paths for example, and then getting the council crazy enough to believe in it. Publicity is paramount.
@09conrado competition would only do good, since that is one more reason to invest in the city for more good publicity. At least, that is what is going on in the Netherlands itself.
@ptuku Ah, you're right there, I was just reading up on the competition for Dutch cycling city and for Velo-city 2013 myself. Too bad we lost there. I meant to say that quarrelling about 'my city is best' doesn't help in advancing infrastructure. But of course, you are right in sayong that friendly competition raises the bar for everyone and of course, then everyone benefits.
Wrong. Dead wrong. Yes, there is a high tax on cars, but every 18 year old in the provinces who gets their driving licence buys a car, so obviously they're not inaccessible. This is one of the richest countries in the world, after all. In the cities, on the other hand, there is no need for a car with cycle tracks everywhere. Auto industry? Denmark had car factories like everywhere until the 1960s. We ride because it's easy and quick.
@godesseq2 The typical winter in Copenhagen doesn't have much snow and ice, so it's not as big a problem as you'd think. They bike paths are also cleared and salted as well. You still have to be careful when it freezes, though.
(Bi)Cycling advocates in the Anglophone world should notice :
that the demographic riding is as broad as that which might otherwise be driving cars, i.e. not only assertive, athletic young(ish) predominantly male.
the scarcity of the recreational style bicycles ( mountain bikes and road racers ) that we in countries where utility cycling rates are close to zero 'choose' to ride , that with the absence of an externally imposed helmet law, very few choose to impose it on themselves.
the bikeways are too much respected, very well delimited, in light blue, great idea... things of the Civizated(OLd) world... nothjing like this here in Brasil( Santos/SP)
Imagine how much cleaner our air, how much healthier we'd be, and safer the streets would be if more NY'ers and other cities in general chose to get on a bike instead of a car.

@TUUK2006 The time it takes you to get to the Metro, I will probably be half way to the city on bike. Add a bus, and you will not have a chance.

Why do we ride bikes in the city?
I don't want to pay a fortune for parking, or spend what feels like half my life looking for a free space. It's a simple as that.

@Liludk Don't forget the laughably high cost of ownership for a car.

@16nine not EVERY 18 year old
Staunte 2 months ago
Q: Why so many bicycles in Denmark?
A: Because Denmark has no vehicle industry and an import tax of 180% is applied to every car import - that's 180% of the car's retail value!
Fact, not a joke. Look it up if you want - My uncle works over there, he only got away without that tax because he is an engineer for their military.
