@StatusBaddest I don't get why they continued the race, I agree with you there. The show must go on is a bit over the top in this instance, even by 1050's standards... but to say they were murdered and your "whitey" remark, automatically makes you a mindless animal.
Nope, officially they kept the race going to keep all roads clear for the ambulances. Picture a quarter of a million people going on the road after canceling the race.
If you pause at a certain point, you see someone who has lost their head in a crash.
These people came for enjoyment. Imagine their horror when an massive pieces of the car fly at them. RIP to all of the deaths, condolences to their families and friends, and RIP to all other fatal accidents that have occoured, and will ever occur.
@goldbullet50 Because the bonnet of the car spun into the crowd and decapitated many spectators, the front axel and engine block also flew into another section of the crowd. Since there was no such thing as safety in 1955, the crowd was packed and fully exposed if anything flew into the spectator areas. Hope that answers your question. If it was a rhetorical question then sorry for wasting your time.
83 died in total, they continued with the race to allow all the ambulances to get away. If they'd stopped it, all the roads would've been jammed by spectators leaving.
Some have no doubt already said this in the comments but when you re-watch the video understand that spectators were decapitated before your very eyes when the bonnet hit the crowd. Absolutely shocking if you ever look deeper into this crash.
As much as I hate to have to put this - to the idiot complaining that they didn't see any decapitated bodies there's some poor person missing his head at 1:32. Couldn't believe how close people where allowed to stand to the track!!! I know its a totally different era but surely just a smidge of common sense and imagination will tell you that standing that close to machines travelling at 150 mph is never a good idea?!
It's horrifying how safety was once an afterthought, far below looking good or being famous. Wow le mans is an amazing race but this just goes to show you what a dangerous sport car racing is. All of the fans who were killed and pierre lavay let you rest in peace:)
Actually the race goes on for a good reason. There were a lot a people there, and at the end of the race, when everybody leaves, there is a lot of traffic. They kept the race going so the crowd would stay, and so it was a lot easier and faster to get everybody to the hospital.

@yorchito0808 Cold? Maybe a bit, but its informative and not overly sensitive (today' reporters would almost cry). It were a different (tougher) times - 10 years after the biggest war in the world. War pilots were the first real drivers, and many after them shared similar attitude. Between '54 and Senna death in '94 24 drivers died at F1 events only, and you would have to add many more spectators and drivers in lower formulas (f.e. one of the best F1 drivers Jim Clark died in Formula 2 race)
@marshad82 About the music - look at today's documentaries etc. and you will find music in most of them, and it will be quite dramatic, and will be creating right atmosphere for the topic. Looking on it from 'technical' point - in the opening 11s you can hear the music, then engines and tyres accompanying commentary, until the crash. What would you like to hear from then on? Silence is no option, would you like to hear all the screams and cries? Not to mention how many cuts were made there.
@Miamicop100 thats one of the stupidest number "coincidences" i've ever seen. wanna know a good one? add the numbers together on a roulette wheel and u get 666
The biggest killer was the engine (that huge black mass tumbling at high speed away from the primary collision site). The hood, also detached and decapitated several people, but this happened quickly and is barely discernible in the video. Numerous other bits of debris and the mag. fire killed everyone else. Levegh was thrown clear and died of brain trauma.
@GearsofMaverick Alright, then wikipedia it troller, it has been recorded as the worse crash in motorsports history, IT KILLED PEOPLE, DONT BE AN ASSHOLE AND SAY IT DIDNT EVEN HAPPEN
@VTC1000HP I saw a documentary about the crash, it was told that if they had stopped the race, the huge amount of spectators would seek their ways out of the event and could block the way for ambulances to get to the injuried. The number of death could be increased if the race was stopped.
It is incredible to believe how this race was even allowed to take place knowing what we do now. We had a circuit designed in the 1920's with no safety run offs at all, the only tyre barrier was a tree!! Than you had very light cars using very high octane and very flammable avaition fuel with in excess of 300BHP that could do 190mph along the 4 mile straight with brakes that would not be up to a 1.2 Punto these days Just suicidal man!! Even more tragic for Levet and those poor souls and families
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I still don't buy this "80 dead" story. Watch the video closely. The hood doesn't look like it's going through 80 heads in the first row of spectators, it's clearly seen hitting the barrier behind that first row of spectators, which causes the dust you see at 1:17. The engine and some other debris fly up and then fall down quickly, killing at best the 2-3 people they crashed on. For those debris to cut through 80 people they'd have to be very sharp and fly through in a straight line. They dont.
You still don't buy this "80 dead" Story?!? You've made a callous and idiotic conclusion from reviewing a few minutes of video? The FACTS of this accident are well established and have been thoroughly anylized by several historians. Crack a book... try Death Race: Le Mans 1955 by Mark Kahn, based on interviews with Macklin; and Le Mans '55: The Crash That Changed the Face of Motor Racing by Chris Hilton.
You can have your own (absurd) opinion, but not your own facts.
@rustycuyler What I'm saying is most of those "80 dead" probably died from other things than the debris. Fires, crowd crushes (which have made much more victims in sports than direct car crashes, by the way). But a hood flying straight through 80 heads without loosing speed or fall down, that's just ridiculous. 80 people in line is a LOT, you'd see it in the video. The trajectory of those debris clearly doesn't allow that. Want factual evidence? There isn't a single decapitated body in any pics.
@LordApocalypse7 "There isn't a single decapitated body in any pics." - then, I assume, You've seen nothing about this accident. Simple. You should also listen to what witnesses have to say about decapitations.
Most of the deaths were directly related to the crash. The engine came free and killed many people as well as the fire from the magnesium body. Heavy car parts flying at 150 mph directly into a crowd will do some damage. The facts aren't up for debate here, it's well documented what happened at the race, do a little research.
@sherman3211 Levegh's 300 SLR struck the mound at such speed and angle that it was launched into a somersault, which caused some parts of the car, already damaged and loosened by the collision, to be flung from the vehicle at very great speeds. including the bonnet and the front axle, both of which separated from the frame and flew through the crowd. The bonnet decapitated tightly jammed spectators like a guillotine. the car's heavy engine block also broke free and hurtled into the crowd
@LordApocalypse7 what do you smoke. dont buy it. maybe we should drag all the american bodies back from okinawa before you will believe apples are toffee coated at fun fairs. you mong. british news has never been propoganda of any kind. it is said as it happens. wait till you loose a child sad man.
@LordApocalypse7 Killing at best 2-3 people? Are you serious? The debris didn't fall down quickly. It flew through the air, bounced and bounced over and over again flying through the air. You're trying to analyze this to make yourself look smart when you have no clue. The debris was moving over 150 MPH. Getting hit with a nut or bolt at that speed could kill someone, let alone a whole motor and suspension pieces. I've read the book by Chris Hilton, maybe you should as well.
@LordApocalypse7 You know nothing! Well documented facts fly in the face of your incredibly moronic comments. Use your fingers to do some research instead of playing with your tiny pencil-dick.

Not to mention how many cuts were made there.

unlucky 23, you know the number that that becomes evil as you see it. 2+3=5, 23-5=18, 18/3=6. 6+6+6=18. The Devil = 666^^
Miamicop100 10 months ago
@Miamicop100 thats one of the stupidest number "coincidences" i've ever seen. wanna know a good one? add the numbers together on a roulette wheel and u get 666
showstopper9ren 8 months ago
The biggest killer was the engine (that huge black mass tumbling at high speed away from the primary collision site). The hood, also detached and decapitated several people, but this happened quickly and is barely discernible in the video. Numerous other bits of debris and the mag. fire killed everyone else. Levegh was thrown clear and died of brain trauma.
PS-Please don't feed the trolls.

How idiot were those damn racers , why didn't they stop the Goddamn race ?!!
VTC1000HP 11 months ago
@VTC1000HP I saw a documentary about the crash, it was told that if they had stopped the race, the huge amount of spectators would seek their ways out of the event and could block the way for ambulances to get to the injuried. The number of death could be increased if the race was stopped.

@hh85 well that's a good reason xD

LOL pouring water on the burning magnesium. Isn't that a surefire way to cause more explosions?

@timlamiam You betcha! Never use water on burning magnesium. You will never be pleased with the result.

trying to take off the fire with fire extinguisher will only make it worse since magnesium when burning can eat oxygen as well as carbon dioxide

They dont.
LordApocalypse7 1 year ago
@LordApocalypse7
You can have your own (absurd) opinion, but not your own facts.
rustycuyler 1 year ago 20
@rustycuyler What I'm saying is most of those "80 dead" probably died from other things than the debris. Fires, crowd crushes (which have made much more victims in sports than direct car crashes, by the way). But a hood flying straight through 80 heads without loosing speed or fall down, that's just ridiculous. 80 people in line is a LOT, you'd see it in the video. The trajectory of those debris clearly doesn't allow that. Want factual evidence? There isn't a single decapitated body in any pics.
LordApocalypse7 1 year ago
@LordApocalypse7 "There isn't a single decapitated body in any pics." - then, I assume, You've seen nothing about this accident. Simple. You should also listen to what witnesses have to say about decapitations.
thylegion 1 year ago
@LordApocalypse7
Most of the deaths were directly related to the crash. The engine came free and killed many people as well as the fire from the magnesium body. Heavy car parts flying at 150 mph directly into a crowd will do some damage. The facts aren't up for debate here, it's well documented what happened at the race, do a little research.
sherman3211 1 year ago 32

British news is no propaganda of any kind? Get your head out of your ass kid, all news is propaganda.
sherman3211 1 year ago
