I notice that you rest your arms on that pad, I have a problem with throwing and arthritis in my arms. Holding my arms in my legs or waist hurts. Any suggestions? also you said the clay was 300 grams? is that 2.5 cups of clay.
Hey Simon thanks for the demo. I am in a ceramics 1 class but have thrown on the potter’s wheel before. Not as easy as it looks :) never thought of tapering (inside to out) the lip of a pot, cup, mug... before. I think I will use that in my next piece.
By the way do you have any tips for centering clay on the wheal?? I have never tried this and want to be ready when I do try it.
I have a question. Please someone answer. When you center the lump for a mug or any piece, do you flatten the lump of clay (the step before you open the clay up) to the guide??? I hope this is clear.
Hi Simon, it's me again. I try to incorporate the way you do things, I hope that you don't mine. How does the mirror help and I somehow got use to using my finger rolled up instead of straight out like you do. I will try that to see how it works out. Thanks for your many helpful tips.
great tips... Im going to use them today. Have to make 4 usable vessels either kitchen or tableware today. Im a beginner still exploring... great videos simon.
This video is extremely helpful. What happened to the video of 7 steps to throw a cylinder. Could you please put that up on You tube. I saw it only once. I thought that was more in detail for a beginner like me.
Yep Simon- still practicing but having trouble with the handles. Hope that's the next clip. I went to your brother John's open day and he said handles are the hardest thing so that makes me feel much better.
Very true Gordon :) I have been at it for a few years now and finally am getting comfortable pulling a decent handle. Not the best in the world, but I have forms I can enjoy, Simon taught me that comfort through these vids :D
Hi Simon, I recently bought a hand made coffee mug that had that lip feature you have in this clip. I like this feature and now hopefully I'll be able to throw it;-D Thanks ~ Karen
why do you not throw on bats? It will save you time lifting the pots off, and ensue that you don't damage the pot in transportation.

when you pull up you arent compressing the rim. Is that because its a smaller item or do you not feel its necessary

Always great to be reminded about the basics !
Don't you smooth the rim on these mugs after tapering it ?
I have seen you use leather or sponge in other video clips.

Nice to review the basics, especially the rims advice, I use a fairly groggy clay and it's difficult to taper it well.

Nothing worse than starting the day with a coffee mug with a fat rim....the day just doesn't go well.
Here's to the perfect rim...cheers!!!!!!!
Thanks Simon
