i'd say it's ignorant just to believe that you can train a dog, it's not ignorant to study dogs because you might miss something even if you studied on your own. you have to understand that view on the relationship dog-owner and on training is different in other cities, other countries, generations, and so on. that is why you need some "standardized" texts, practice and good instructors to lead you the right way. then you can start developing your own method.
I'm very concerned that you're advocating for people to just call themselves a dog trainer and get going. Sadly, the profession is unregulated & yes people can give themselves pretty much any title they want, but that is completely irresponsible. People should apprentice under a certified trainer, study learning theories, and develop an academic background and knowledge in their field. Your words undermine all the work people have put into becoming qualified, competent trainers.
Tug Dogs is opening it's doors to those who want to become certified, professional dog trainers! Tug Dogs has excellent instructors, an exstensive curricula, and a real passion for helping people and dogs. Find us on youtube as Tug Dog Acres! good luck everyone :)
Hey Zak! Can you please help me out? I have a 1yr old Fila Brasileiro & she's pretty good at obeying my commands etc. Her only issue is that she gets SUPER feisty when she is eating food and there's other dogs around. She also gets this way with her water & any toys! Any human can stick their hand in her mouth while she's eating or play with toys etc & she's ABSOLUTELY FINE. It's only when there are other dogs around- I cannot give her a treat, food, toy or water. Please help!!
I've found that dealing with the owners, not the dogs, is the hardest part of being a trainer. I'm not a full time trainer and I don't think I could ever do it full time simply because of how ignorant and misunderstanding people are of their dogs. Perhaps it's me.....
I got into dog training in a similar way to Zak.................had some competitive success on the disc dog field and wanted to do it fulltime. So I immersed myself in everything dog. Took agility, obedience, trick classes; read anything I could get my hands on. Watched vids and dvds. And most importantly, I networked and spoke with as many trainers as I could. Dog training is forever a learning process! I am grateful to be able to do what I love for a living!
Great video, zak. Thanks for the reminder that, "the way to learn is to teach."
And although I agree with what zak says here... there are still some good schools you can go to. Pat Miller's school in Maryland is very highly rated. And it's a good idea to have some kind of credential when advertising your dog training services.
It's a shame there is no exam to be a trainer or behavior specialist because a lot of people build their business and they just want to make money and have a very few knowing about dogs! The same for breeders!
@askel89 The dog professional industry is unregulated. That may change 10 or so years from now. But as I said in another comment there are schools you can to that are highly recommended. There's the Dog Walking Academy run by Veronica Boutelle for dog walkers. And then there is Pat Miller's training school in Maryland. Terry Ryan has her own training school in Washington as well. Both of these women are very well known around the world and have published several dog training books.
I am in high school and I would like to go onto college to learn about dog behavior and pyschology, it is my ambition to train dogs and I really like your training style.
I've noticed you treat your dogs and talk about them as if they were your children, and I found this rather interesting video about a border collie that is showing the world that dogs DO learn like kids.
You know there is a difference between becoming an adequate dog trainer and a great dog trainer. To be great you read the books, you take training classes with trainers that know what they are doing. Not everyone is a natural. I understood dogs but was the clumsiest human being on the planet. I had a natural talent with dogs but lacked the finesse. All my dogs were trained but what I learned was invaluable.
@rottwild4ever I am not talking about going to an overpriced school to be certified. This is being proactive and educating yourself on dog behavior and positive ways to communicate with your friend through hands on experience and lots of study time. Volunteer to walk dogs at a shelter and put your skills to work. Develop your skills and always treat your dog with the respect they deserve.
Read The dog's mind, also Karon Pryor & Jean Donaldson. Think about what is fair and you will go far.
"Host and Producer of...coming soon!!!" lol Cant wait!! I've been asking on your life story of how you've became a dog trainer for 2 years!! Finally answered!! You were and still are very dedicated to your dogs....great job, Zak!!
this is Micaela again i was wanting to no is it alright to kinda make my own way of training my dog to do tricks. it works! if i dont no how to get my dog to do somthing for me then i make my own way.
hey zak my name is Micaela, i was wandering some people i talked to, say dog training is a way to control your Animale, they say that i must be a major control freak to train my dog. i got in big trouble one time for training this dog a few tricks, when i was waching him at his house for a few days, she told me to never talk to her ever again. i think that she was mad becuse, she has been trying to train her dog but never could get im to do what she wanted, and then saw him doing it for me.
Enjoyed this video...as usual! :) Simple and honest....just start training! LOL
I would love to send you an email but can't seem to find how to do that. :) I have a dog dilemma I would love to get your input on...please find the time to hop over to my channel and send me an address you can be reached at. I promise to keep it short because I know you're busy! LOLThanks for all your great videos and show!
I agree, JUST DO IT! Relationship based training! Great way to put it! Too funny, I also got into dog training to spend more time with my own dogs! I will sometimes turn away clients to go play with my own dogs. Not a great way to make money if you turn away clients. haha! Anyway, I totally agree, NO PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS!! Nice video! School teachers also make GREAT dog trainers! :)
how long do i let my dog run a day ? she will run for ever in -20 !! she get about an hour of fast running each day. lol as we are not looking for dog training tips lol, this is y people love you, you are a real person and very genuine, as you say.
that answer was partly helpful. I like that you recommend to be around dogs, i think that is a good start. but one also need the right guidance, and knowledge to become an effective dog teacher.
@bowler180max I hope you do not mind me answering this... Get the book "Animal Training by Ken Ramirez" as it will have everything you will need to learn about training. It will help you learn about the many aspects of training any animal, not just dogs! The philosophy works for all species. I am a full time PE teacher and part time dog trainer and teaching is teaching! Good Luck! :)
