Me n my family had left our house thinking tht Charley was coming our way. We moved to a hotel for a night in Kissimmee,fl to about Orlando to get away from it. We ended up stuck in it. Listening to ppl in the other rooms screaming. It was 1 crazy nite.lol. Wen we went back home the next morning. We saw tht nothing had ever happened in our area. We live in largo,fl. Which is about 30mins frm Tampa.so think about bein in a situation like tht.
One of the men sounds like the guy who used to do the old Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. He sounds right out of the 50s. He cracked me up. It was the last man who spoke...lol
@BlueYup I believe so. AND that computer was a total piece of junk. I went cheap and got some used laptop off Ebay for our work until that point. After Charley, I purchased a Sony Vaio and it has been the work horse of the Tahoe ever since! XP too- very stable.
can u guys hunt this season in 2010 btw how did u like it up in charleston havnt been hit directly by a mojor sence hugo and would like to keep it that way if one comes ill let u guys have at the hurricane while me and my honda go running to atlanta for cover lol btw i subbed cause this is way to awsome not to want to watch again
I live two exits South on 75 from where you were. The high school that I attended is still under construction. They just opened one more building today. Some students still have classes in module buildings. During the hurricane, my cousins and I had to hide in a bathtub under my mattress in case the roof blew away. We suffered a lot of damage, but after hearing of the death of a few close friends and the loss of my aunt's home, we were lucky.
@BandNerdThatMarches Charley was the real deal. A small, intense cat-4 hurricane. It strengthened so quickly right before landfall and hit an area less densely populated than say, Miami or Tampa. As bad as it was, things really could have been worse with this particular hurricane.
I was just beginning my sophomore year at Port Charlotte High when Charley hit us. I used to live just north of the county line of Charlotte, in Sarasota county, about 20 or so minutes north of where you guys were at the underpass. We didn't have too much damage, just lost our fence and an old satelite dish. We did also get power back at 3 am that night, so whoever of our friends were able to make it out of Port Charlotte to come to our house it was like a safe haven, with A.C and a warm shower.
I like how when the eye wall passes the guy thinks it was a tornado....I guess most people that go through these things tend to think they were hit by a tornado, when in fact it was just part of the eye wall....lol
It came over lakeland, It was crazy... I watched everything fall over in the back yard. The front of our house was boarded up, So I watched out the back... you couldn't even drive down the road after, so many trees down...
I was supposed to arrive to Orlando from Puerto Rico the day it struck, when I got there 3 days later, the damage was incredibly bad. Didnt noticed that the hurricane got to Orlando weakened.
The Tahoe was parked under the overpass under the middle of it so that there was maximum clearance between the Tahoe and the bottom of the overpass. There was probably some funneling but not much where we were. However, closer to the edges, up on the concrete embankment, the compression of wind was likely quite significant.
How come you didnt have to worry about the wind tunnel effect/ wind acceleration under the overpass? I think my favorite part of the video is when you are calling out the wind speeds in real time
Yes, 943.6 or something like that. We have much better records now of our measurements. I hit 941 in the eye of Rita in 2005. That is my personal lowest ever measured.
OH MAN!!! Charley was soooooooo bad!!! There was a tornado in our back yard!! But our house was ok, it did take out a tree in the back and my friends house was also behind my house where the tornado was. She SAW the tornado in her back yard, but her house was ok too. We were very lucky!
This is the only video I've seen from our area of Pt. Charlotte. I live about a mile from that exit. I stayed in the closet the entire time, so I'm thankful to actually see what it was like right here. Glad you all didn't get hurt. Thanks, guys!
Was this hurricane moving particularly fast?It seems on the time index that it only took less than one hour for the eyewall and eye to pass your position completely.
A lot of people evacuated Tampa and vicinity and went to Orlando. The hurricane still impacted them. Same happened with Fran in NC in 1996. People left the NC coast for Raleigh and put themselves right in the path of the hurricane- also at night.
how much hurricane wind can a car take before it gets flipped? Because in another Charley video there's an old mail-carrier Jeep DJ5 (from the 70s) NOT facing the wind that survived the 174 mph gust at the justice center plus all the other eyewall wind
IM not sure if anyone really knows how hurricane winds flip cars? There are several videos of cars fliped upsidown ut other cars right next ot them appear normal.... I would guess that there are some annomalies with the wind field that cuase them to flip a car... Perhaps a strong downdraft occures andreflects off the ground creating a horizontal rotational motion that lifts the cars up? maybe it has to do with aerodynamic annomalies near buildings? I wish there was video of it as it occured.
One reason hurricanes flip automobiles is that some of those autos are in motion. In other words, it is a lot easier to flip a moving object than one that is parked. However, extreme downdrafts can certainly get to the under side of a car or SUV and flip it over in a matter of 3-5 seconds. To my knowledge, no one has ever recorded this happening during a hurricane. There's always a first time.
Hurricanetrak - What sky conditions did you observe in the eye. The brief skyward video shot as you exited the vehicle looked very "blue" but I wonder whether that was the glare strip at the top of the windshield?
i was in hurricane andrew when i was six and i remember my ears popping. when i went outside to see what happened i remember it looking like a nuclear bomb went off; there was stuff like pine needles stuck in the glass of my dad's car. I was also recently in katrina in Slidell. The eye came over us in slidell and it was pretty bad, but andrew was definately the worst i've ever seen.
rockstar you are nearly right around the corner from there. Almost 3 years after the storm and there's still a section of lighting out on Kings HWY as you get close to US 41 and the Hampton Inn sign shown at 20:27 is still blown out. Still some damaged homes here and there too but for the most part Charlotte County is back. Now let's just hope that the 2007 hurricane season more resembles 2006 not the nightmares of '04 and '05.
i was in there, we were near the orlando area, we went out in it, i had a poncho on but help not one bit! it makes me want to do it again but in faster winds...
were you sheltered by the wind when you went out? Because when I tried walking outside in Winter Park I could hardly stand and I was almost hit and killed by flying pieces of a street sign.
i agree southwest.....we also live nearby right off loveland(about half mile) for all others...that is a very busy intersection and exit loop during normal conditions..neway..for those that didnt experience charley then you may not understand that it drew tears.which is the highest compliment i could give to these guys for such great video and the best ive seen yet on charley.live and on tape!
I very much doubt Charley will be upgraded. Charley appeared to finish strengthening as it came ashore, whereas Andrew was in the midst of explosively strengthening as Andrew crossed the warm and deep water of the Gulf Stream just off shore from Miami. That, plus Andrew storm damages are an order of magnitude more severe in the landfall area.
im from england and was in Florida on vacation when this happened, we watched from the balcony for the first bit but retreated when the friggin trees fell down! great video dudes!
We live only about a mile from where the video was shot and travel through there almost every day. I think it has to do with the angle the wind hits the car. The motion of the wind is as important as its force
