It's pretty simple- when an ISP can choose which sites reach its subscribers eyes, they have the power of censorship and they will execute it. Right now, we have net neutrality and we can access the whole internet. Without neutrality legislation, ISPs intend to eradicate it and choose how- and if- it will deliver individual sites to its customers.

You need to analyze the things you read, not just scan the words. Without analytical reasoning, reading is useless.
It's pretty simple- when an ISP can choose which sites reach its subscribers eyes, they have the power of censorship and they will execute it. Right now, we have net neutrality and we can access the whole internet. Without neutrality legislation, ISPs intend to eradicate it and choose how- and if- it will deliver individual sites to its customers.

The US government has already started to censor online speech, not just websites based in America but overseas too. Ummm -- We're not setting a precedent. Net Neutrality principles were a basic protection of the Internet until they were stripped by the FCC under heavy influence of telco lobbyists in 2005. NN supporters aren't trying to set a precedent but restore the baseline protections that made the Internet such a success for free speech and innovation in its first two decades.

That doesn't really help me. Will the internet be put up to cable tv standards? If so, that would be ridiculous. Also, those swearing fines come during slotted 'family time'.
Beyond that, the first amendment doesn't protect ALL speech. Most, yes, but not all, such as the types that incite violence. There are specific standards, and a 'lemon test' to tell the difference. Just wondering what the site was about, because you can't scream censorship if it wasn't part of protected speech.

Net Neutrality does not involve any sort of censorship. It has nothing to do with "think of the children!" and everything to do with Comcast breaking people's bittorrent downloads and such (basically, Net Neutrality is the idea that Comcast and other ISPs don't have the right to do that).

Think of websites like channels on cable tv: right now, when you log on, you have access to every channel in the world. This is because ISPs are currently abiding by Net Neutrality, giving you access to the entire internet. THEY HAVE EXPLICITLY STATED THAT THEY WISH TO ABIDE BY IT NO LONGER. In other words, without making neutrality a law, it is a given that our access to websites will soon be limited the way our cable tv options are limited to the channels our cable companies wish to provide.

That naively assumes perfect competition which couldn't be further from reality for most Americans, who have two providers to choose from if they have a choice at all. (and even in less concentrated markets, corporate collusion is the name of the game these days). And when you are talking about the media, corporate censorship facilitates government censorship. Just look at China, where Yahoo has helped the government crack down on dissent & dissidents.

Given enough time competitors will arise. But if you want to stomp out competition in its infancy by all means increase government control and increase regulations. AT&T didn't have a nearly century monopoly on telecom for nothing. Net neutrality will give that same monopoly to Comcast.

...the congressman on this video represents the district in which microsoft resides. he is representing his constituants, however, this net neutrality would benefit microsoft the most. undermining the free market rules that we all face for internet service. this bill would create price controls for service. similar to making a porche the same price as a family van...it does not allow service providers to charge different rates for faster service.

I am not sure if the Senate has seen this yet but I wrote my Senator, and ask that he vote no on the bill S1959. Everyone should do the same, for if this bill was law in the 60's the civil rights movement would have never happened.

just read that piece, and I agree with the post below that we should be able to see exactly what the bill entails, but I honestly don't see how the possibility of some sites being easier to load than others could help our first amendment rights at all. If i put out a radical political statement they might make it harder to get to my site, spinning it any way they please. I think just the possibility of that would greatly hinder the internet as a medium all together.
