This has to be the BEST version of this song including the original. So many versions have saxophonists that just overbear the accompaniment. The soloist does a great job of giving the overall song a sultry quality. Try picturing one of those old black & white movies at the part where a guy's in a bar smoking a cigarette and a gorgeous woman walks in. That's the vision I get from this version of the song.

So far this is definitely my favorite version of Harlem Nocturne. Duke Ellington was a musical genius.

Right up there with Duke's best. I don't think Earle Hagen had any idea so many artists would pay him so much in royalties for just this one melody. (I suspect he didn't MIND that part, to be sure...)

Suave, cool, tasty!!! And haunting. I don't know what recording it was on originally, but it's on a 2009 reissue compilation just called Duke Ellington on the Classic Records label, at Amazon.
