@glenclosed ... im sorry but hendrix built the foundation for all music today. if you truly think that, you need to have some kind of MRI examine your brain, make sure your all right.

"we'll have a bloody hissy fit about it." screw you.
@Rhuarc224 actually, people like chuck berry, d angelo, and buddy holloy did. not hendrix. remember the beach boys? noone mentions them. how bout bo didley?
BUT IT IS OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO BURN THE DAMNED THING....THIS IS A GREAT COUNTRY, BUT WE HAVE TONS OF ISSUES AND BURNING THE FLAG IS THE MOST SYMBOLIC WAY TO SHOW WHAT WE WANT TO SAY..AND IF PEOPLE DONT LIKE IT, THEY REALLY DONT BELIEVE IN FREEDOM OF SPEECH, THEN THEY ARE REALLY F..ED UP AND UNAMERICAN.....ZEALOTS ALL OF THE RIGHT (REALLY THE WRONG)WING...CONSERVATIVES, DIE TOO...SAME TYPE OF JERKS....
This music is pointless, structure-less, self-indulgent noise. It was OK as performance type of act back in the 60s but artistically it is no more enlightening than sketching Mona Lisa on a prison wall using human feces. Hendrix recorded tons of great, timeless music but he really jumped the shark with SSB at Woodstock.
@woland99 Well if you're not open-minded enough to appreciate it then it sounds like pointless, structure-less, "self-indulgent" noise. Its supposed to sound ugly and jarring at parts because America can be a very ugly country. If you listen you can hear him emulating the sounds of bombs dropping and an ambulance at once point. Its very artistic; this was how he viewed America, and I have the utmost respect for him and this song.
@sk8rbuoi Yes of course. And we still bomb women and children around the world. My point is - if I heard it in 1969 in Woodstock it would do something for me. But (as most politically inspired stuff) it does not really age well. You can't shock anybody into accepting the reality of military-industrial complex by playing Hendrix. It IS structure less noise that mimics sound of bombs. Well great. Now - can we try to do something in 2011 that we can proudly hand to generation 42 years from now?
@woland99 How does this not age well? It's almost directly translatable to 2011 as a lot of people even say that Iraq and Afghanistan is our generation's Vietnam. The point wasn't to "shock anybody into accepting the reality of military-industrial complex," the point was to use artistic expression to create a piece that portrayed how the artist felt about the country. 42 years later, this song rings as true for me as it would have in 1969.
@woland99 In 2011, in a world filled with synthesizers and electronic drums beats, the raw emotion portrayed between the man and his electric guitar, and what he could do with it strikes closer to the heart than many artists can do today.
@sk8rbuoi Hendrix stuff was mimicked and rehashed over and over again - music was a bit different in 1969 - then his solo was pushing boundaries - now it is mainstream. The System adapted, took Hendrix sound and produced million harmless copies. I think that a lot of earlier Dylan music still applies today but I won't deny that some of his "stream of consciousness" songs did not age well. But they were great in the 60s. Look - all I am saying is lets make meaningful stuff now.
@woland99 By all means, try, woland99. Interested in hearing what you come up with that's more relevant or more likely to move anyone. Frankly, I think it's some intersection between the piece itself and the listener's openness to be moved that may cut the difference between then and now, but do please make a new future heirloom commentary.
@tokiluv1 No dude. Not everything made in 60s was brilliant. It was controversial when it was fresh - right now it is a pit self-indulgent and pretentious. I do not deny Hendrix was very good musician. Just wish he did not burn himself out while chasing some illusions.
Jimi Hendrix's music and legacy will never die. He will always be the best guitarist of ALL TIME, in spite of the fact that he was ahead of his time as an artist.

@couchman44 Why? Because it's produced some good guitar players over the years?? This version of that country's national anthem was in fact VERY darkly ionic. The US of A was in 1969, killing millions of civilians in SE Asia in the most evil disregard for human life since WWII. Hendrix, through his artistry, was protesting this senseless slaughter. The war would continue for a few years, but after the protests of Hendrix and others, and the horror of My lei, it was at least unmasked!!
he was so in control of the feedback, the tail end, he lets it ring gently. I must have listed and watch this woodstock performance of his over a thousand times in the past year, literally! And, I never once got sick of playing it. Unlike having hundreds of movies and once is enough, never want to see it again, it's strange. But there so much to be learned from his playing being a beginner guitarist myself and so much to be appreciated. Just one small riff of his can take years to master
Your video description is very ironic seeing as this song was actually protesting the Vietnam War. The crazy guitar licks and effects intertwined throughout the song were meant to mimic the sounds of gunfire and explosions. A comment on the interdependency of American imperialism and violence in the context of the Vietnam War
@ReddBrainz Jimi Hendrix loved this country. He did at as a tribute to the USA, just watch the Dick Cavett Show interview, where he talks about it. Jimi was actually a proud vet of the 101st Airborne. Learn your shit before you start with your Commie-Pinko "American imperialism"blah, blah, blah
@keefwannabe93 Watched the interview, or at least the portion I could find on youtube about the star-spangled banner. Nothing about it suggests that this was a tribute meant to reaffirm the credibility of US involvement in Vietnam. "Learn my shit"? Most cultural, historical analyses of this song would recognize it as a poignant statement against the war. One can love their country and still be against its actions. Perhaps you should do some reading before spitting accusations such as this.
@ReddBrainz At a more civil level, Hendrix' own statement was, "We're all Americans... it was like 'Go America!'... We play it the way the air is in America today. The air is slightly static, see." According to Wikipedia, Hendrix was given the choice between two years in prison and a stint in the Army. He chose the Army and joined the 101st Airborne, but didn't do all that well, and was discharged after a year. (I personally opposed the war, but I don't play guitar.)
@DrSamba1 Thank you for bringing this discussion back to more civil territory. I get the impression that my comment came off as claiming that Hendrix was Anti-America when in fact, I only stated that he opposed the Vietnam War. After reading a bit more into it I can say, judging from his own comments on the rendition, it was at least meant to reflect the widespread disapproval of the war expressed across the country. Whether or not he objected in the same way is unclear.
@ReddBrainz ,Sorry but Jimi did NOT protest the war. He did serve in Viet Nan and was proud of his service. I protested the war. Watch some docs on Jimi and educate yourself.
@457sab Jimi Hendrix did not serve in Vietnam, only a year-long stint at Fort Campbell before being discharged. What is with people telling me to educate myself, when clearly they aren't educated on the facts themselves?
I guess it would help if you were stoned out of your head. If it were not for distortion and electronic gimmicks this guy would never have made a dime as a musician.
@mawcaw555 Jimi was actually a very good acoustic guitar player, and a very good writer. He has plenty of songs also where it's in a very jazzy setting. Jimi was also a star guitar player with R&B singers in harlem, because they liked his style. without electronic effects, Jimi was probably more of a bluesman, like buddy guy or something like that.
@CrumpKid2k the distorted guitar sound would sound fine for short periods of time, just not through the whole song. im not hating on jimi hendrix. i love him, he's awesome!
@kiethah10 i dont think he was ahead of his time, he did something new, and alot of people followed it what makes it look like he was ahead of his time, because he was pritty much the only one in his time.
@kiethah10 Indeed, very far ahead of his time, But I like to think he pointed music in the right direction. We have Jimi to thank for everything since... well maybe not Justin Bieber, I don't hold him accountable for that.
