The point is this: absolutely EVERYONE who has EVER been a member of the almighty Deep Purple is an excellent musician. Deep Purple only has the best, even to this day.
A true story. When DP and Joe got together thet send him a stack of cd's together with a setlist and asked him to rehearse those numbers during the next month. It was about 15 numbers.
Well, a month went and they got together at the studio to rehearse the live set and lo and behold satch came and had rehearsed some 25-30 numbers because he thought they could do well in a live situation, including "Anyone's daughter" which Ritchie wouldn't play live!
AWESOME! Thank you Stargazer for posting and thank you You Tube for providing a forum for timeless classics such as this that might otherwise be locked away...
@Rammbock They actually offered him to stay as a full time member, but he had to refuse because he has signed a contract about solo albums and didnt want to break it or something like that. But then again morse isnt that bad.
Satch really enjoyed his time with Deep Purple, even though it was short-lived. After Blackmore was about to drive the band into the ground, Satch came and saved DP. My deepest respect for Blackmore for his guitar skills, but still he had no rights to act like shit with his bandmates.
@lfior789 Yes I know, he left DP after the release of Stormbringer. He also said that "Stormbringer was crap". Well honestly, everytime that the band changed the lead singer, the sound of Purple was a bit different, but no matter what line-up they have, every album rockes (with the exeption of Slaves and Master I would say).
@NightmareSnake I like Cut Runs Deep , Fire In the Basment and Too Much Is Not Enough from that album. But the rest of the album... I'm so sorry, but it's not my taste. Maybe it should...
Satrini/Morse are great and disciplined guitar players.Technically procifient. Blackmore was DP's sound. He has many detractors because of his attitude. But his talent is timeless.

True. But Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath came out the same year (1968) and I'd consider them to be a bit more influential, but Blackmoore did influence the entire shred guitar genre.

But sometimes less is more, kinda like BB king, and because of that Satch and Blackmore sound way better. Anyway, I still think blackmore was the best with DP. In this situation I also think Paul Gilbert or Vinnie Moore would so best with DP.

Of course I adore both Ritchie and Joe, they're both inclredible... but it's a shame that the solo in this version is far beyon the one on the original vsn! Really love that, one of my favourite from Ritchie!!!
With all due respect to Satriani, and with absolutely no intention to offend, as far as Deep purple solos go , there is only one person who can get it right, Mr Blackmore!, not even Tomy Bolin --RIP
Well, Satriani played a BY FAR more interesting solo in this song, then Blackmore did after 1987. I'm a big fan of Blackmore, but Blackmore sadly put often little effort into the solos in this song (like he used to). Listen to the 'Third Night' Live album, from Sweden 1984. OMG, Blackmore at his finest, but in 1993...there was sadly too much ego, alcohol etc. between Ian and Ritchie. Blackmore will forever be the #1, but I still go and see the band. Satriani, Bolin and of course Morse are great.
Satriani is a great guitarist, but only a substitute. He never was a DP member. Bolin was a genius, as good as Blackmore : listen for evidence to 'Come stand the band' !
There is a bootleg out there when they were in japan with Joe, "It's called flying in a purple dream", if anyone has it or gets a hold of it i'd love to get a copy. Joe did a nice Job filling in, but Steve morse has done an exceptional job.....Purpindicular is a great album.....Pick up live at the Olympia from 96...it wont dissapoint.
Anyone else heard the first few recordings from thate 1994, after Satch left, when Morse had joined the band on a trial period? He played the solo kind of like Satriani did here, but much longer. Poot sound, but fantastic recording. As much as I love Deep Purple past to present, sadly Morse doesn't put much effort into this song when it's played these days. No ending solo etc. :(
People use the word 'feeling' to diminish a guitar player. All that really exists are different styles and ways of playing. As a long date musician and scientist I say. the only logical way to understand 'feeling' is to define. People think it's something mystical. It's only the way of playing the notes, your own sensibility you impinges on each note. JOe is a genius. I like RItchie too. AS a Member of Deep Purple, Ritchie really sounds unique, but Joe still rocks a lot.
I respect Satriani's ability, but as for feeling-he don't have it-in my opinion. I like Blackmore's version much better. It was done with feeling. Here this is just Satriani doing super fast arpeggios. This song had Blackmore's most expressive playing, and Satriani makes this song silly-doing those arpeggios for effect and applause. Dumb.
I mean, Joe seems like an ok guy, not conceited and all, but I don't get his type of "shred" playing. He's an amazingly talented, technically adept player, but I have always preferred blues-influenced players much more-especially the British blues/rock guys that grew up listening to the old blues guys in the US. There's more feeling and expression there-at least to me.
You're probably right about the no connection thing. Both Morse and Satch didn't write the songs -thus the lack of connection.
satriani did not achieve filling richie blackmores shoes,no doubt he is awesome solo,on the other hand steve morse got the point and the spirit of purple makes them sound great
What a good memories! I was at their concert in Germany 4 days later after this gig...It was my first "big" concert I`ve ever been, and seing Satch with Deep Purple + Uriah Heep as a warm up act totally blew my mind..
I saw them in 1994 as well during the summer tour. What a fantastic band and performance. There was truly life after Blackmore, which I doubted back in those days before seeing this. Satch was on fire along with the band through the night. I really loved that they dropped 'A Twist In The Tale' and replaced it with 'Ramshacle Man', which they performed brilliantly. The improvisation and solo in 'Knocking At Your Back Door' was one of the highlights I'd say.
Sorry boys, but this lineup can't do the song justice. Satriani certainly can't do Blackmore's riffs so he does his own version. It lacks the continuity and feeling that Blackmore had.
Not anymore he isn't... ;) Thank God for that, and you saw the result when Ritchie was in 100% control of the band, like in 1990...'Slaves & Masters'....Joe Lynn Turner. Come on!
Slaves and Masters was better than House of Blue Light and The Battle Rages On. It was like a Rainbow record that happened to feature Jon Lord and Ian Paice. I'd rather Deep Purple with Joe Lynn Turner than with Steve Morse. Steve Morse sucks balls
Both Jon Lord and Ian Paice hated Turner, Turner has said it himself, and Paice have said he never really liked the guy, but he could sing that's the only good thing he could find about him. Ritchie loved him, and Roger was stuck in the middle. I find it strange that you say Steve sucks balls, when he, Satriani and even Tommy Bolin, all successfully replaced Ritchie
Deep Purple isn't supposed to sound like Rainbow. It's the weakest effort along with 'Abandon' (1998) and 'Deep Purple' (1969)
I don't think Steve has successfully replaced Ritchie. Satriani and Tommy Bolin on the other hand replaced Ritchie easily (except that Tommy was too strung out on heroin to play live properly). The only 3 songs that I've slightly enjoyed from the last four DP albums are Ted the Mechanic, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming and Any Fule Kno That. I reckon they should have kept Joe, or replaced him with a non-jazz fusion guitarist.
No one in the whole world can play like Blackmore, the sounds he gets out of guitar is unmatchable , like what he played with coverdale in Mistreated live , Son of Aleric, and the one in desperate heart. God has gifted him unmatchable skills ,
I don't like what Morse or Satriani do with this song. Both are obviously great for what they do, but not with DP. This song calls for a sleazy solo and these guys don't get it. Satch has more personality than Morse. With Steve Morse you know what he's going to play before the solo even starts. A couple bluesy licks then a meaningless run ad naseum. No personality. Steve Morse couldn't help Kansas and doesn't help DP. He should stick with country/Dregs stuff - not try to be a rocker IMO.
Yep, Satch proved that Ritchie was replacable. After the 'Perfect Strangers' tour, Ritchie became an unpredictable man, that put little or no effort into his playing, he got bored of the reunion thing. Listen to the 'Nobodys Perfect' live album for instance. I love Ritchie, but he could do better in 1987-88 and 1993. The Rainbow project w. Doogie White "ressurected" the classic Rithcie in 1995. Check out this song from 1993. w. Ritchie and compare it to this, when Satch is playing it... ;)
Malmsteen is a guitarwanker. Satriani played Blackmore better than Blackmore did on the 1993 tour when he was still a part of the band. Satriani gave new life to this great song. Blackmore didn't even bother to play the solos in it on several 1993 shows. When he is as unpredictable as that, the band was better off without him.

Why Satriani? Why not Yngwie Malmsteen? I'd sa Yngwie would be much better suited to Deep Purple because of his style of playing and Fender Strat. Does anyoe know if they offered Yngwie the "post"?
Nothing wrong with Satriani. He is likely among the five fastest players in the popular rock, but he definitely does not have the improvisational ability that Ritchie Blackmore has. I also, personally, don't like his guitar tone that much. Ibanez is known for using basswood body guitars. They sound very sterile and muddy to me regardless of the amp. I might just be very old school, I don't know.
Purple were prog rock ,gothic, funk rock and metal before any of those terms were in use. They were setting the template for a revolution in music."Nobody's daughter "is country,"Fireball" is thrash metal"Dealer" is brilliant ,sad and scary.
yeah, yanks stick out like sore thumbs. like joe dont know whats happening. all the jokes over his yank top and probably under his chin. no wonder he fled.
Shut up.... I believe deep purple were very good, but DONT insult satriani, he was requested by deep purple to join, but was in a long term contract with sony....he NEVER fled, shitball, u dont even deserve to lick his toes, stupid numbskull....
Por que el borracho Gillan se pone delante de Jou? Yo les vi toda la gira española y uno de los conciertos Jou no fue su noche y al día siguiente se salió, concierto memorable el de Gijón 94.Long Live Heavy Metal.

....satriani.... he's NOT the guitarist for deep purple... he hasn't got the right phrasing nor the right sound to play in a band like purple... Morse is the only guitarist which could replace Richie Blackmore.
I don't agree. Somebody can replace Blackmore, but it's someone with a strong personality, who doesn't try to copy Blackmore's style and has the rock in his blood... for me Morse is the ideal deep purple guitarist today.
of course, it's just about personal likes or dislikes. I think Satch is out of his habitat in here, he's to clean, to "good guy"... Morse is a good guy too, but he's got (my opinion) the touch to play also Deep Purple classics without being banal, and it's one of the most difficult things to do. and a part of this, with Morse they found a new direction with more funk/prog influences, and I think their music is still as great as blackmores. only different
I agree with you re. the long term thinking for Purple. I personally didn't find Morse's playing that moving or atractive with the Dregs & solo, but for all parties, the best realistic option has been pursued. Ritchie is following his heart in BK, Purple is rejuvenated, with a needed infusion of writing & compositional ideas. Morse is forced to be more of a collaborating compromising, band member because he's not totally in charge like in the past, and the band at least continues to breathe!
Being able to see this line-up on video is fabulous--thanks so much for this look.
Satriani was never a serious contender for Blackmore's job in that in his own shows he plays two hours of solid guitar and would never have been happy playing rhythm behind a singer for very long. A great substitute in a pinch though! Very nice playing.
A Satriani/Purple album would have been very interesting, however. Satch is an admitted DP fan.
I think he'd have been pretty happy, myself - I thought he got offered the job but he had a contract with Sony, or something which basically meant he didn't have the time.
this show must have been in Japan since he could only do that tour because he had his long term record deal. then they got stve morse. They look prtty animated in the crow for japanese. Does anyone know?
The mere fact that this band is not one of the founding members of the so called "Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame" ruins any credibility that the HOF organization has. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is nothing but an advertising tool, bought & paid for.
What and Idiot you are Judging the Guy by his Height...Right now Satch is the Greatest Guitarist alive and he didnt join DP Because of his agreement with Sony records
I like how you add "alive" to your comment. I know Satch and he has said many times that Hendrix was and is the greatest, hands down...Would have been a great fit in DP...Morse is fantastic, though...Gonna see DP on 8/12 in SoCal...

What a good memories! I was at their concert in Germany 4 days later after this gig...It was my first "big" concert I`ve ever been, and seing Satch with Deep Purple + Uriah Heep as a warm up act totally blew my mind..
individrus 2 years ago
I saw them in 1994 as well during the summer tour. What a fantastic band and performance. There was truly life after Blackmore, which I doubted back in those days before seeing this. Satch was on fire along with the band through the night. I really loved that they dropped 'A Twist In The Tale' and replaced it with 'Ramshacle Man', which they performed brilliantly. The improvisation and solo in 'Knocking At Your Back Door' was one of the highlights I'd say.
SilverTounge85 2 years ago
Sorry boys, but this lineup can't do the song justice. Satriani certainly can't do Blackmore's riffs so he does his own version. It lacks the continuity and feeling that Blackmore had.

ok , but for a fan , it's a great and unique experience t osee it on stage . Blackmore is a legend , Satriani the guitar god .

Not anymore he isn't... ;) Thank God for that, and you saw the result when Ritchie was in 100% control of the band, like in 1990...'Slaves & Masters'....Joe Lynn Turner. Come on!
SilverTounge85 2 years ago
Yes, you can only mark my post as spam and give it negative feedback, but truth hurts, as that awful track on 'Slaves & Masters' is titled as well.
SilverTounge85 2 years ago
Slaves and Masters was better than House of Blue Light and The Battle Rages On. It was like a Rainbow record that happened to feature Jon Lord and Ian Paice. I'd rather Deep Purple with Joe Lynn Turner than with Steve Morse. Steve Morse sucks balls
holydiver7190 2 years ago
Both Jon Lord and Ian Paice hated Turner, Turner has said it himself, and Paice have said he never really liked the guy, but he could sing that's the only good thing he could find about him. Ritchie loved him, and Roger was stuck in the middle. I find it strange that you say Steve sucks balls, when he, Satriani and even Tommy Bolin, all successfully replaced Ritchie
Deep Purple isn't supposed to sound like Rainbow. It's the weakest effort along with 'Abandon' (1998) and 'Deep Purple' (1969)
SilverTounge85 2 years ago
I don't think Steve has successfully replaced Ritchie. Satriani and Tommy Bolin on the other hand replaced Ritchie easily (except that Tommy was too strung out on heroin to play live properly). The only 3 songs that I've slightly enjoyed from the last four DP albums are Ted the Mechanic, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming and Any Fule Kno That. I reckon they should have kept Joe, or replaced him with a non-jazz fusion guitarist.

Satriani > Blackmore (1987-93) :)

No one in the whole world can play like Blackmore, the sounds he gets out of guitar is unmatchable , like what he played with coverdale in Mistreated live , Son of Aleric, and the one in desperate heart. God has gifted him unmatchable skills ,

is there better quality of this somewheresa else anyone thanks
iidontfitinnobox 2 years ago 4
I don't like what Morse or Satriani do with this song. Both are obviously great for what they do, but not with DP. This song calls for a sleazy solo and these guys don't get it. Satch has more personality than Morse. With Steve Morse you know what he's going to play before the solo even starts. A couple bluesy licks then a meaningless run ad naseum. No personality. Steve Morse couldn't help Kansas and doesn't help DP. He should stick with country/Dregs stuff - not try to be a rocker IMO.

Joe aint' fudging shit, he's a guitar GOD.
lrambach 2 years ago
Yep, Satch proved that Ritchie was replacable. After the 'Perfect Strangers' tour, Ritchie became an unpredictable man, that put little or no effort into his playing, he got bored of the reunion thing. Listen to the 'Nobodys Perfect' live album for instance. I love Ritchie, but he could do better in 1987-88 and 1993. The Rainbow project w. Doogie White "ressurected" the classic Rithcie in 1995. Check out this song from 1993. w. Ritchie and compare it to this, when Satch is playing it... ;)

Always liked the song, Satch is a great addition, but I was surprised to see him struggling with, and fudging, the sweep picking.
woodwardtp23 3 years ago
Joe doesn't do the sweep picking stuff much. The only song I can recall him using sweep picking is Mind Storm.

Yeah, my bad. I haven't heard much of Tommy Bolin's work, but he was fantastic.

"Keep on moving" is Bolin's work (together with Hughes, Coverdale, Lord, Paise)

Nothing wrong with Satriani. He is likely among the five fastest players in the popular rock, but he definitely does not have the improvisational ability that Ritchie Blackmore has. I also, personally, don't like his guitar tone that much. Ibanez is known for using basswood body guitars. They sound very sterile and muddy to me regardless of the amp. I might just be very old school, I don't know.

....satriani.... he's NOT the guitarist for deep purple... he hasn't got the right phrasing nor the right sound to play in a band like purple... Morse is the only guitarist which could replace Richie Blackmore.
jazztom86 4 years ago
nobody can replace balckmoore =(
mnunezper 4 years ago
I don't agree. Somebody can replace Blackmore, but it's someone with a strong personality, who doesn't try to copy Blackmore's style and has the rock in his blood... for me Morse is the ideal deep purple guitarist today.
jazztom86 4 years ago
yeah could be
anyway I like Satriani =)
mnunezper 4 years ago 2
of course, it's just about personal likes or dislikes. I think Satch is out of his habitat in here, he's to clean, to "good guy"... Morse is a good guy too, but he's got (my opinion) the touch to play also Deep Purple classics without being banal, and it's one of the most difficult things to do. and a part of this, with Morse they found a new direction with more funk/prog influences, and I think their music is still as great as blackmores. only different
jazztom86 4 years ago 5
yeahh good point.
Satriani is a god but he sounds too modern for a band which is seen and heard in a classic way.
mnunezper 4 years ago 4
I agree with you re. the long term thinking for Purple. I personally didn't find Morse's playing that moving or atractive with the Dregs & solo, but for all parties, the best realistic option has been pursued. Ritchie is following his heart in BK, Purple is rejuvenated, with a needed infusion of writing & compositional ideas. Morse is forced to be more of a collaborating compromising, band member because he's not totally in charge like in the past, and the band at least continues to breathe!

pedrucci87 4 years ago 2
totalmente deacuerdo, Blackmore es un gran guitarrista pero compararlo con satriani es como comparar a Javier Molina con De Lucia...
ErNano 4 years ago

Being able to see this line-up on video is fabulous--thanks so much for this look.
Satriani was never a serious contender for Blackmore's job in that in his own shows he plays two hours of solid guitar and would never have been happy playing rhythm behind a singer for very long. A great substitute in a pinch though! Very nice playing.
A Satriani/Purple album would have been very interesting, however. Satch is an admitted DP fan.
StratomasterT 4 years ago 2
I think he'd have been pretty happy, myself - I thought he got offered the job but he had a contract with Sony, or something which basically meant he didn't have the time.

The mere fact that this band is not one of the founding members of the so called "Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame" ruins any credibility that the HOF organization has. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is nothing but an advertising tool, bought & paid for.
