this song is based on the raag "Bhairon", which is supposed to be a raag for dawn. It required the genius and daring of the great Naushad to use it in an evening setting in this movie. We can only wonder at his brilliance
I remeber my old days when i was doing my MSc from Punjab University chandigarh in 1970. The common room superviser was requested to play this song every night at 9.00pm ie at the end of playing of music songs. Thanks to you tube for providing this song.Any body from that time ? Hostel no5
@dinmal1948 You can send question in yahoo questions or try in google..or facebook..or jsut type in your college name and then there might be some of your classmates or room mates get in touch with you..
one thing more you can do..is if u remember anyone's name just keep searching them in google or facebook..you might find one and then other connected to him or her..like that..internet will definitly help u find u ur fellows..
Dil ko choo janewala gana sung by Melody queen lata jee. The more one listens to it the one gets involved in it. thanks for fantastic upload my friend.
There isn't much difference between urdu and hindi: they are basically like two dialects of the same language. in fact rajasthani or harianvi is more different from hindi than urdu is from hindi; although surprisingly the first two are considered dialects of hindi. Hindi and Urdu has almost identical grammar, they only differ in the vocabulary. Urdu uses a lot more Persian and Arabic words.
@ssam00 What is not known by most urdu speakers is that urdu has largest % of words derived from Sanskrit and not Arabic or Persian. Most basic words in urdu come from Sanskrit and emotive words come fro Persian or to a lessr degree from Arabic. IMHO urdu and Hindi have the same grammar.
I do am reading between the lines, what you seem to be pointing at, by reciting these lines of Urdu language literature, but the sad thing is that you two won´t be able to solve your argument just by such gimmicks. I just advocated the cause by simply translating it. Almost all languages, more or less, are having similar expressions for more than one meaning.
you did not notice the comments given by poissondelamer on this beautiful hindi song.He is very proud of his love for URDU but doesnot seem to be having reasonable knowledge of URDU. you check all his comments on this song. i had asked him to tell me the meaning of this couplet to check his knowledge of urdu.
beautyful song in world most sweet languag URDU. URDU itself romance, love, poetry, galaxy, civilization, culture, respect, sentiments, history etc. TAJMAHL can be world most beautyful building and URDU CAN BE WORLD MOST SWEET LANGUAGE.
I do`nt mind if you call it urdu Mr poissondelamer.you must now admit that Hindi can also be such a sweet and beautiful language if written by such a great poet like Shakeel Badayuni
Early sixty to seventy this song has ruled all schools and colleges competetions. Every girl wanted to sing like Lata. By god this song is still unbeattable.
I heard Naushad Saheb had a ability to make a non-singer to sing and hit the music, This is obiviously Lata Jee who is singning..its sounds fresh even today and it should be super duper hit.
This was the song from which Lata made a mark in Indian Cinema and gave a direction to its music.Naushad had scolded Lata during reharsals of this song.
Meena Kumari was not just in adifferent class from ALL hindi cinema actresses but in a league entirely of her own. Her ability to portray the tragedian oozes genius
Thank you for pointing out the dawn at the end of the song. I stand corrected

It's not an evening setting. There is a (fake) sunrise when the song ends, just before Gauri attempts to drink the poison.

Dast: Haath
Humne apne yaar ko haath se khaana khilaya
I fed my beloved food with my hand.
Pyas: thurst
Pesh: to offer
Aab:water
When got thursty, I offered my beloved water.
Whats the big deal about it?

ingratitude lata/mukesh always try to name URDU as hindi, what remains in lata' throat without URDU,patha howa baans.
am not against any language, but dont like naming "urdu" as hindi,URDU is URDU and hindi is hindi, URDU IS LANGUAGE OF MUSIC MELODY, not hindi

This comment has received too many negative votes show
its not matter of "calling urdu". its pure 100% URDU. ITS NOT HINDI.
MAHATMA GHANDI got bruend millions of URDU BOOKS, during 1947. every home was set fire with nameplate written in URDU.
get this song translated in "hindi" and see result.
people who drink urine of cow, and eat shit of moneky always try to name "urdu" as hindi.
