I understand that these phrases are long, and you need air. However, when you breathe, open up your throat. When you can hear a gasping sound, it means you are breathing in an unhealthy way.
.... WE CORS PLAYERS CAN PLAY A H**L OF ALOT MORE MSIC THAN DVORAK !!!!
iT annoys me how Everyone films themselves playing this ONE excerpt. Never anything good[ not saying dvorak isn't good] but in an audition play this if they ask you to , but learn something else, c'mon people get original
omg...playing the oboe since four and a half year and have had played the englishhorn half a year..so i know what I say..your tone ist extremely good..sounds so unbelievable beautyfull!!!! keep up, I want to hear you in an professional orchestra
Well now I have a tone to look for. I had to pick this up ad have presentable skill in a day from bassoon, tuba and trombone. Fun day to say the least
While I do disagree with the jaw vibrato and agree with others who said it is for single reed instruments (former sax player here), you were fantastic.
I just picked up the english horn recently because I am playing in the pit for our high school musical (Wizard of Oz!). I have been playing oboe for a number of years, but I never really heard this instrument. I'm so glad I got to hear it this way :)
Thanks for posting - the New World Symphony has been stuck in my head for decades now, ever since playing it (bass fiddle for me) in high school orchestra.
i would guess with the lip/jaw. it doesn't sound choppy, and the pitch changes. If it was the stomach, it would be one note, and it would sound choppy.
Well actually, it's more stable to use your jaw. You can do it longer without having to breah, since moving your diaphram strains it, which you need to create a foundation for good tone quality. Thus making "diaphram vibrato" poor technique.
See when I'm playing I find that my tone suffers when trying to use my jaw. =/ But I'm not that great Oboe yet so that could be it. I had always heard that Jaw vibrato was more of a Sax thing. Oh well.
well for sax, The jaw vibrato is a must, that diaphram stuff isn't going to cut it.
But for Oboe/english horn, you could get by using the diaphram vibrato untill you develop the jaw vibrato. Because the jaw vibrato is hardest to learn, but it is best in the long run.
@HyperAX5 no no no. that is completely false about the oboe. it is the best to use on sax, because it is a single reed instrument. diaphram vibrato is standard on the oboe
@HyperAX5- If you use your jaw, then you would be making your tone go sharp and flat. your mouth shouldn't move with vibrato, moving your mouth messes up your sound more than moving your diaphram.
The problem withery normal high c is definitlly not a bocal problem. It's a problem lot's of english horns have. That's just the fun of playing english horn. When you put your reed a little bit more in your mouth and push your lips a little more than usual. Follow this tip and your c will be perfect!!
This last month I've listening to a lot of english horn music. I think it's my favorite instrument. I'd like learn to play one so bad but I won't have the money for it anytime soon. For now I'll just listen.
OMG...You have so much feeling i can hear it....that was very beautiful. I love the english horn. I just started playing it after a little over a year of playing. Very beautiful instrument. Thank you so much for this performance. :)

you dont have A idea of who you play that!! the melody is so slow, and actually you dont play a great think, and YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO BREATH!!!! in a middle of a solo you can´t listen the artist breathing,it sound's like if you were drowning.
go dig your ears ... if this is bad.. show us how well you can play... don be a sour grapes.... musician like you will never go far.. Opps.. did i say you're a musician.. I take back my words.. you're not in our league... you're in a different league.. bigoty class..
This melody was written by Dvorak to symbolize a funeral dirge for the "Song of Hiawatha" by Longsfellow. So therefore playing at a faster tempo would only take away from the feeling of the peice. If you are in an concert hall, you would not be able to hear the breathing over all of the strings. This is a top quality english horn player. You are wrong.
i didn't even know this instrument existed, it's wonderful! I just LOOOVVVEEE how it sounds! I'm pretty sure it's a woodwind, but it sounds like a brass instrument, because it's pitch is so clear (unlike clarinets, which are rather squeaky)
