Yes, it was liberation. Like Kosovo, the Armenian-majority NK Autonomous region declared its independence from the Azerbaijani SSR, but since Azerbaijan insisted it not leave the flock, war erupted and Azerbaijan forced the separatists' hands.
I could care less what the proportion of Azerbaijanis and Armenians were. Demographics change as fast as time passes. All that matters is that Yerevan was historically Armenian, and has an Armenian majority today.

Azeris were called caucasian tatars up until the 20th century and Azerbaijan was proclaimed in 1501. That was the date when Ismail I conquered Baku and proclaimed himself Shah and started to unite the country. Before this Safavid dynasty and after it Azerbaijan was divided into small feudal states, but all of those were our own.
