I agree, except that I don't think it's a big deal. The way I look at it is that we (as individual members of society) feel powerless in the dramatically changing world and we find ways to convince ourselves that our voices, thoughts and experiences matter. Nothing wrong with that.

What's interesting with these social networks is that they CREATE celebrities... on a different scale than traditional stars. People care about what you do because to them, *you* are a celebrity. There are now thousands of mini-celebrities for a certain niche of people. You're one of them ;)

yes...you can't read a person's facial expression or body language through typed messages on the internet.
And because of that, it is sometimes easy to misinterpret a person's writings; ie, 'take things the wrong way'. Face-to face communication is often very uncomfortable for folk like those with autism or Asperger's Syndrome. They have a tendency to avoid eye contact with (look at) the person with whom they are speaking...in cases like this the internet is a useful communication tool.
on the other hand...all these social networking sites allow people to express themselves and whether they have 0 followers (like me) or millions (like you) freedom of speech & expression is probably the most important freedom people can have...so YAY for everyone who expresses themselves! either erudite (like you) or incomprehensible (like me)

I just turned 60 and I love Youtube and do Facebook as well as DeviantArt. Its a great way to connect with people I haven't seen in years, but chasing fame is a big waste of time unless you are really talented and hope for a career in music or acting.

I don't think use these to "inflate" their sense of self-worth. I think that very many people use them to "replace" their missing self worth. Past generations were taught to base their ego on what they'd accomplished, but since the 70s schools have been turning out people who are proud of themselves WITHOUT having done anything to be proud of. So we need something -- anything -- to base self worth on.

don't feel like a narcasist, it's natural to want to be cared about. Because like you said, knowing people care about what you have to say or are interested is comforting and re-affirming. The fact that you made a video about this contradicts itself, you've put out content on a social networking site to see peoples responses, same goes for every commenter, including myself. I'm not criticising I just want to make a point, it's nice to know someone is interested, and my comment shows my interest.
But what do YOU really think? because in this vid you seem to go back and forth between "is it bad to be an attention whore?" and "I should probably not be an attention whore". I use social networks to meet people. I don't care if anyone else cares what I have to say or not. I think that if they don't like me they will do one of two things. They will either ignore me, or they will show how stupid they can be by making ignorant remarks. If they like me, then they will follow or befriend me. It is a tool to meet people with common interests and ideas. Not to erect a cyber monument to ones self. At least that isn't why I use the services, anyway.

Personally I think it is a good thing for everyone to be able to have "fans" or "followers". Before the internet and all those networking sites, only established celebrities could be icons. But in fact they don't necessarily have anything more than everybody else. Their fame is what distinguishes them, but anybody can be famous for different reasons. I think networking websites makes everybody equal and we can all bring something to some people.

I don't want to follow people I don't know because they want to look interesting. I choose to follow people because they are interesting, beautiful or both.

OK, no twitter here and on facebook I only have people I really know pretty well. So I use facebook to actually keep in touch with people, who aren't close by and such. And I appreciate knowing what they are up to. OK half of what they post I don't care about much but so what? The rest matters.

I rarely used them (twitter-Facebook) my fav is youtube. I never met someone who was great on these social sites. And when they are they do not follow up.
Everybody jokes about how Twitterers tweet about the most meaningless of trivialities, but if you actually look at Twitter, most people are sharing pretty cool stuff or thoughts (or they're spambots). People do have a choice in how they use social networks, and I can guarantee you that if they're being followed and watched, it's because they share interesting ideas and in most cases aren't excessively inwardly focused.
i have a myspace (because facebook are more for nerds, facebook sounds really profesional) and all my friends have myspace and its more not professional or nerdy, which is better. its more like a ganster site. i know im wierd haha.

There's an over reliance on technology for just about everything. It would be nice if people were a little more thoughtful about how they use it. IMO, I think the only people you can really care about are the ones that you usually communicate with in the flesh. Otherwise it's, at best, an illusion. What you and other vloggers have here on YT as well as the other sites mentioned is just entertainment. It's interactive television or radio radio, so to speak.
I was thinking about the reason why I may follow carlkr on you tube. Well I think for me the answer is simple, as he already said, our society starts to define her self more and more through those social networks. So we start doing things we would usualy do in the normal life at this social networks. I wouldn't say I am looking for friends on those networks, but for interesting and sympatic people. Something Iusualy do at the "reallife". And this is also the main reason why I follow carl here.

I don't think use these to "inflate" their sense of self-worth. I think that very many people use them to "replace" their missing self worth. Past generations were taught to base their ego on what they'd accomplished, but since the 70s schools have been turning out people who are proud of themselves WITHOUT having done anything to be proud of. So we need something -- anything -- to base self worth on.

And recently, I've been feeling soo self-concious about updating my status to like "just about to take a shower" because who really cares? I mean, all my friends on myspace do it. That's why I don't use Twitter to get followers. None of my friends know I'm on it, and I'll probably never tell them. I post on it for me; to vent, and to post things that I think are funny. If other people become interested in what I have to say, then fine, but I don't go out and try to get every single person on Twitter to follow me.

I moved across the country a couple years back, and I use mine to keep in contact with friends and meet people. Plus, you don't necessarily need to talk about yourself on twitter. I talk about music and other friends on it also. It all depends on how you use the outlets

don't feel like a narcasist, it's natural to want to be cared about. Because like you said, knowing people care about what you have to say or are interested is comforting and re-affirming. The fact that you made a video about this contradicts itself, you've put out content on a social networking site to see peoples responses, same goes for every commenter, including myself. I'm not criticising I just want to make a point, it's nice to know someone is interested, and my comment shows my interest.

I use social networks to meet people. I don't care if anyone else cares what I have to say or not. I think that if they don't like me they will do one of two things. They will either ignore me, or they will show how stupid they can be by making ignorant remarks. If they like me, then they will follow or befriend me. It is a tool to meet people with common interests and ideas. Not to erect a cyber monument to ones self. At least that isn't why I use the services, anyway.

Personally I think it is a good thing for everyone to be able to have "fans" or "followers". Before the internet and all those networking sites, only established celebrities could be icons. But in fact they don't necessarily have anything more than everybody else. Their fame is what distinguishes them, but anybody can be famous for different reasons. I think networking websites makes everybody equal and we can all bring something to some people.

I don't follow many celebrities on Twitter, because I don't really care. I care more about what the people I actually know are doing, and think Facebook and Twitter help me keep up with their lives, especially the people I don't get to see very often.
If I'm subscribed to you on Youtube, you entertain or inspire me, and I value your opinion. I follow Youtubers on Twitter because I care, even if they don't care that I care.

OK, no twitter here and on facebook I only have people I really know pretty well. So I use facebook to actually keep in touch with people, who aren't close by and such. And I appreciate knowing what they are up to. OK half of what they post I don't care about much but so what? The rest matters.

Carl, I use Facebook to reconnect with friends I've lost touch with--and to then spend time with them in person, in real life.

Everybody jokes about how Twitterers tweet about the most meaningless of trivialities, but if you actually look at Twitter, most people are sharing pretty cool stuff or thoughts (or they're spambots). People do have a choice in how they use social networks, and I can guarantee you that if they're being followed and watched, it's because they share interesting ideas and in most cases aren't excessively inwardly focused.

There's an over reliance on technology for just about everything. It would be nice if people were a little more thoughtful about how they use it. IMO, I think the only people you can really care about are the ones that you usually communicate with in the flesh. Otherwise it's, at best, an illusion. What you and other vloggers have here on YT as well as the other sites mentioned is just entertainment. It's interactive television or radio radio, so to speak.

I was thinking about the reason why I may follow carlkr on you tube. Well I think for me the answer is simple, as he already said, our society starts to define her self more and more through those social networks. So we start doing things we would usualy do in the normal life at this social networks. I wouldn't say I am looking for friends on those networks, but for interesting and sympatic people. Something Iusualy do at the "reallife". And this is also the main reason why I follow carl here.
