That was the very first episode of Golden Girls that ever made me cry. God it was funny as hell but so sad. Sophia put on a great performance, it was like she was really crying and i cried for her.
this episode was on today on tv tropolis (i live in canada) and i tell you when sophia said that about her son i cowered like a baby. for a strong european woman (i know its a show) to be so strong and then to say those words.....my family can relate.
Has anyone noticed that the girls's shirts look like a traffic light? Blanche is green, Rose is yellow, and Dorothy is red. Somehow it seems as if it fits with their views on promiscuity (and i probably didn't spell that right) Blanche is all for it, Rose is kinda hesatant, and Dorothy just can't get a date. HAHAHAHAHA!
One of the most heartbreaking scenes ever, if you can watch this and not have a single tear in your eye by the end, you have no heart or feelings at all.
I'm straight and 17 years old. I grew up in the streets. Therefore, i became though and numb. But when i watched this episode(BTW, i'm a BIG GG fan.) I cried until the credits finished. This is the most phenomenal episode not only in the golden girls. But in all of the whole TV series before and today. It's comedy is way ahead of it's time. It's amazing. When sophia said her baby's gone. I wept. Because i was able to relate. Rest in peace Girls. We love you. :'(
Man, Rose can sure be funny with her St. Olaf stories, but then there are times like this when they have an actual point to them and can help someone.
Can't help tearing up at that last line. This show was so authentic in issues and emotions and so consummately well played by these four women. Of course, the script writer deserves lots of credit too -- these were some of the best written stories around, and still are.
Three weeks ago, I was in Los Angeles and discovered that the Hollywood Forever Cemetery was a short walk from my hotel. I went grave-hunting and found Estelle Getty's grave. She was an amazing actress. There will never be another like her. The same can be said for Bea, Rue and Betty. No one holds a candle to them.
@beekgirl Actually, it was six episodes before this one. Robert Costanzo, who played Joey Tribbiani, Senior on Friends, played a high school coach whose star quarterback was flunked by Dorothy.
This episode always makes me cry. But i always wondered why u never see Phil. You always hear about him, but they never put him in an episode. You see Gloria in a couple of episodes, but they couldnt but phil in at least one episode before he died.
I often wonder about that. My guess is that it would've been hard to pull off. The writers probably didn't want to risk making Phil look too clownish.
Just adding that I'm glad that it was Rose who got Sophia to open up instead of just being clueless for no good reason (which they had her do way too often towards the end) . Why were none of Phil's kids at the funeral or even said to have sent regrets? Lastly, I wished that someone had pointed out that while a husband's family was meant to profit from a dowry, the original principle was supposed to revert to the WIDOW upon the husband's death. In other words, Angela owed HERSELF $49! LOL
@Mktryk Actually a dowry is given to the grooms family. When the custom is that the groom's family gives the bride's family something in return for the marriage, it's called a "Bride price".
What a cathatic performance by Estelle Getty! Going from being unusually hardboiled to finally taking off her armor and admitting that she had misplaced guilt all these years- and FINALLY letting herself acknowledge having truly loved her son and the pain of having to bury him! Throughout it all, Estelle managed to keep Sophia from being unsympathetic to the viewer (no mean feat- considering how rottenly she was treating Angela!) Yeah, she reminded me of folks I've known, too.
this is just so sad because you're not accustomed to taking sophia seriously- she's always the one cracking a joke or making fun of someone at their expense. so to see her crying is just all the more sad :(
I have been watching Golden Girls since I was 16,and I don't hink I can ever see or have another show that is better, that does cover everything. If I was on a tv show,if it wa less than this, I would never do it. And this makes me think of my grandma and my uncle ho died before she did,it's so hard and she never got over it. But this handled those topics in the best ways.
me too:) I have been watching this since I was 16. As strange as it sounds, my life was falling apart. Golden Girls was among the few things that brought a smile to my face. I love this show:). I love Sophia, Dorothy, Blanche and Rose. They felt like friends that came into my life and made me laugh. .even for a little while:).
Even better is that Rose, in her way, finally tells a St. Olaf story that makes sense & actually does some good. She speaks the gospel truth about not letting the past get in the way of moving on with your life.
the most emotional moment i can think of in the whole history of golden girls. Second would go to when Blanche was at the graves of her parents and tells Dorothy that she is no one's little girl anymore
This makes me ball my eyes out because my uncle is very sick because he is overweight and about to die and she thinks that she made him the way he is, so she gets very upset with herself and cries and shes just a poor old lady like sophia.
Sophia rarely cries in the entire 7 years. Whenever she does, its very moving, passionate, and brings me to tears. Another moment was when she started crying when her friend was about to committ suicide. As funny as this show was, it had its emotional moments, and they tackled every sensitive subject, like death and cross-dressing, masterfully.

Estelle really was Jewish. I think it would have been better if she was cast as the Jewish grandmother, that would have been better than the Italian grandmother.
he brought shame to the House of Hausenpfefferstuhledunker!!!!! LOL Rose's and Sophia's stories are the best!! LOL The dowery check bounced!!! This was the only moment Blanche wasn't being a slut!!!!!
Brilliant show. The chemistry of this cast is really unparalleled. They touched on so many pertinent and relevant topics of both the 80s and today with class and true objectivity. I know pain is subjective, but I don't think it's going too far out on a limb to say that one of the worst pains has to be the pain of losing one's child. Parents aren't supposed to outlive their children. I think it's a particularly tragic kind of loss.
Sophia was a lot like my italian grandmother (Estelle and my grandmother passed two years apart) and when i see this episode, I think of my grandmother and what she was like before dementia. She was hard and a perfectionist. But she had a heart deep down. Just like Sophia
There will NEVER BE a group of women like this! The Golden Girls is the bomb. Mama Sophia and Bea you are missed dearly and everyday of our lives here at home. We watch you everyday. RIP to Bea and Estelle
Sophia is always very hard on people, maybe for the right reason, but I always felt like she was the strong one the one who would get anybody through any of their problems, so it is very painful to see her like this.
Indeed, this had to be Estelle's finest work on the show because she was able to be the salty Sophia we love, but also allow herself to be vulnerable.
My great-grandmother died in 2001 at 88, and in her final years, she suffered from Alzheimer's & would often forget who even close relatives were. It was painful for us, but most of all, it had to be for her. When she passed, I could take comfort in knowing that she was finally free. I hope Estelle's loved ones are taking that same comfort.
I don't care how many times I see thi sepisode it always brings tears to my eyes. Great show, the fact that the network knew that you do not need to cast young, thin people to make a hit show was brillant on thier part. I still watch this show and I will always be a loyal viewer!
I am so sad that Bea and Estelle have now passed away. It kills me inside that they are dead. I am glad that they are now in heaven performing in front of God. R.I.P. Bea. I loved you.
this sad now that my best two on the golden girls is up there with god!!! :( check out my tributes i did for both of them...:) in july for estelle and today for bea!! :(
Intelligent. Incredibly funny. Fought for Women's rights. You were one in a million. Growing up watching you and hearing you speak publically made an impression. I thank you. Rip it up above girls! Have a blast.
I'm so heartbroken! It's unbelievable how attached I have become to all of the Golden Girls. I grew up watching this show. Aww... I'm going to miss you Dorothy, say hi to Sofia for me. RIP
Bea Arthur and the rest of the ladies were always seen sitting around the Kitchen table eatting Cheese Cake, but in reality Bea Arthur hated Cheese Cake.
Even though Bea hated the Cheese Cake; Over 150 cheese cakes were eaten during the shows run. Also, they say now and again she eats cheese cake, but only for the memories.
tear jerker... big sally and sophia finally have a moment. just a sidebar: for Phill to have never been seen on this show he sure did get a lot of airplay.
I loved her in "Mask" with cher. Also thats strange in the eposiode she ashamed of her son for crossdressing. She loved the gay community and did various advocate work for their causes. She was a great actress. RIP ESTELLE!
I didn't like the show when those other writers took it over. The remarks became more nasty and sarcastic, and the punchlines weren't funny. I really missed what the show used to be those last couple of years it was on.
Its hard to remember today how progressive this was for its time. Today crossdressing on TV is - dare I say it - normal. (And rightly so!) But this was the mid 1980s, playing to a middle American audience. Its not just hilarious and touching. But really breaking new ground. God bless all of them.
Actually, you're wrong. All In The Family was one of the first shows to approach cross dressing as part of a serious storyline. Edith had a best friend who was a crossdresser. The end of that friendship was just as touching as this, but I do agree with you...GG still deserves credit for how they tackled it. :)
R.I.P Sophia, you were a good actress, Blanche , Dorothy and Rose to, love the G.G all these funny episodes. Never saw a comedy again were the áll of the actors were hilarious at the same time.
I never considered myself a "cross-dresser", at least not like Phil. I am a drag queen. Years (and many pounds) ago, I performed weekends in a cabaret show. I had occasion to watch this episode with my mother one morning, over coffee, on Lifetime. Both of us crying uncontrollably. That morning will always be one of the closest bonding moments between us. God Rest You Estelle!! And thanks for all the years of love and comfort to so many.
I love the Golden Girls. every time i see the end when Sophia said My Baby is Gone.. i just break down and cry every time R.I.P. ESTELLE GETTY AND BEA ARTHUR AND RUE MCCLANAHAN! BETTY ...

RIP

Sophia seemed like an open person I don't know why she'd have such a problem with a crossdresser.
pgy002 2 years ago
She probably didn't have a problem with crossdressers, but it's different when it's someone you know and love, especially if it is your child.
PeterBluth 2 years ago
@pgy002
I agree but I guess its different when its a family member.

Did you know:
Bea Arthur and the rest of the ladies were always seen sitting around the Kitchen table eatting Cheese Cake, but in reality Bea Arthur hated Cheese Cake.
kellyarch 3 years ago 4
Even though Bea hated the Cheese Cake; Over 150 cheese cakes were eaten during the shows run. Also, they say now and again she eats cheese cake, but only for the memories.

I loved her in "Mask" with cher. Also thats strange in the eposiode she ashamed of her son for crossdressing. She loved the gay community and did various advocate work for their causes. She was a great actress. RIP ESTELLE!
adrina911 3 years ago 2
I didn't like the show when those other writers took it over. The remarks became more nasty and sarcastic, and the punchlines weren't funny. I really missed what the show used to be those last couple of years it was on.
bigfig1900 3 years ago 4
i actually like the last seasons but the first seasons were okay but not hilarious like the last seasons.

This is I think Estelle's greatest moment on Golden Girls. You can feel her emotion. Makes me cry everytime.
jlyn1980 3 years ago 6
This is a great clip to Sophia's emotions and Rose's talent for helping other with problems, love them all so much. This show will never fade!
kingplayer14 3 years ago 5
the horrible pain of losing a child, is something that Estelle showed in Sophia in this short but amazing clip from Golden Girls.
Estelle Getty is missed by all her fans.

Do as I do , stop watching TV select what you want to watch on here , no Adds :)

Its hard to remember today how progressive this was for its time. Today crossdressing on TV is - dare I say it - normal. (And rightly so!) But this was the mid 1980s, playing to a middle American audience. Its not just hilarious and touching. But really breaking new ground. God bless all of them.
rossmcl177 3 years ago 6
Actually, you're wrong. All In The Family was one of the first shows to approach cross dressing as part of a serious storyline. Edith had a best friend who was a crossdresser. The end of that friendship was just as touching as this, but I do agree with you...GG still deserves credit for how they tackled it. :)

R.I.P Sophia, you were a good actress, Blanche , Dorothy and Rose to, love the G.G all these funny episodes. Never saw a comedy again were the áll of the actors were hilarious at the same time.

I agree, great proformance at the end. Not too many ppl can make it seem authentic!
