For many people, perhaps even most people, this is a question that has no current answer. They don't know what they want because they haven't had enough experience in enough areas to make an informed decision on what exactly that is.
In school, they ask us what we want to be and we're supposed to figure that out with no experience. People find out they don't actually like what they thought they wanted to do once they start actually doing it.
@TheGamblingApocalyps you know what , you pretty much explained exactly what i think all the time, how does anyone know what they want? especially at 18 19 20 or 21? straight out of school with no experience of the real world? the hell?
Good movie n' all but I found it rather hard to feel sorry for him. Granted, physical abuse is severely fucked up but he just so happens to be one of the higher-lever geniuses that's also very good looking.
@meroxyersox i think he means experience over intelligence, which is somewhat true, but not totally. this philosophy gives the eldest the advantage. the same philosophy that allows old rich men to send young people to war through systematic gentrification. most old people are just fucks.
@gracehuang101 So true! My father always valued his intelligent son to one with true happiness inside of him. He always belittle those who failed their classes. He was like Will in this scene, confused with only his intelligence was a security now he is like Robin Williams smart wise and nice!
matt damon plays an ISTJ (myers briggs).all they want is to be accepted n be a part of something.loyalty. but if the childhood is all hate, never accepted=they become self destructive.frank tj mackey (tom cruise) in magnolia was also ISTJ. ISTJ=Basic Fear: Of being without support and guidance.Basic Desire: To have security and support
Do you have a soulmate? Someone who challenges you? That's the ultimate question. If you don't have that you have nothing. I love Sean Mcquire. He is so wise.
f you...your the shepherd HAHAHA

Yup
Matt Damon won the awards for the film when he was 27; affleck was 25.
Smart lads. . . sure paid attention to what they read

The easiest answer to that question is figuring out what you DON'T wanna do and keep trying new things. All you have to do is not give up.

What does he want? What does anybody truly want?

Man, Robin nailed that role. He did a great job in calling out Will in this scene.

Best part about it is it's his first completion of the 180
You couldn't get Damon to stay in anyone's office and Robin Williams couldn't get him to leave
He was so upset when kicked out
You could see how proud he was of this accomplishment in his face when Damon walked out

I think the message here is, in life EQ is more important than IQ. It's your thought controls your destiny, not your talent or intelligence.

I could watch this film over and over. . .it is that good a script.
Amazing that a pair of twenty-somethings can come up with something this insightful and deep and relevant.

Easily one of the best scripts I've heard in the last ten or fifteen years. No cliches, no bullshit. Just good a good story backed by solid dialouge.
