  • Er, I like Peter Cook, I like Gracie Fields and I don't mind Nick Hancock. Sorry...

  • On the one hand, I do find her quite annoying as an entertainer; her voice cuts through me and I can't really take to her as a whole really. On the other I don't really want to denigrate her as she did entertain a lot of people. To most of the current generation, her popularity is a bafflement. George Formby is far more accessable.

  • Gracie Fields went to live in the Us during the war and left Anne Shelton and Vera Flynn to face the Hun, she got a bad press and then spent the rest of the war annoying British soldiers in Italy to try and attone for it.

And she's a ghastly, awful proffesional Northerner.

  • @Bromley68 sorry that should be Vera LYNN

  • Looks like life sent Cook to room 101. Good riddance!

Gracie lifted the spirits of the British people when they needed it.

  • @arussianbashy berk

  • "Oh shuddup!"

  • i forgot how annoying and self important hancock was. peter cook is in a totally different league. shut the fuck up u stoke prick. so glad he is not on tv anymore. cook legend rip

  • cook was one of the funniest men in the past 100years, he was also a very mean angry alcoholic towards the end

  • I'd far sooner put Gracie in than George Formby; some of his films were quite good (for a Sunday afternoon when it's raining and there's nothing else on).

  • I'm from Lancashire, and I couldn't stand here !!!!!!

  • In fairness to Peter Cook, he wasn't half as snide and pompous as that git Nick Hancock... remember him?

  • My father introduced me gradually to the greatest peple of the twentieth century through stories, books and records and I'm afraid Gracie Fields took her rightful place and Peter Cook was nowhere to be found.

  • Peter Cook was clever. But it is the sort of arrogant, nasty cleverness, that always has to knock those who havent had the same level of education. I find this worse than swearing. I always knew he was arrogant, but not quite this nasty.

Typical BBC. Ffinds anything Northen an easy target. Such a shame I cant pay my licence fee to a different organisation. He was not by several billon the most intellegent man of the 20th Century.

  • There is a comment by Stephen Fry on the front of Peter Cook's biography.

It simply reads ' The funniest man to ever draw breath'.

  • shrewd intelligent ingenious yeah!

you forgot to add alcoholic weird looking oddball . those creep eyes yuch .

his clique of crawlers kept him in full dillusional mode till he gladly died doing us all a favour .

  • Dear Gracie sure has some militant supporters :) aaaah I enjoy your comments immensely

  • What the fuck are you all on about you joyless idiots - If you can't appreciate that Peter Cook was the most sharply intelligent and ingenious man of the twentieth century then that's your fault. For those of us with some kind of comic vision he was peerless and superior to superlatives. Perhaps if you actually watched some of his shrewd satire you might see why he is so lauded by all modern comedians. And he is far more widely respected and remembered than Dudley Moore. farleigh17 got it in one

  • Both Gracie and George will be remembered forever.Unkike Nick Hancock. As for Peter Cook a man of limited talent whoes best work relied on Dudly Moore. Its a shame that he has to stoop so low as to say that about a fellow performer.

  • @patc161 a damn bit more than you ever will, I'll wager.

  • That presenter is a prick

    RIP peter cook

  • Pardon my ignorance, but who was the dude with the white hair? He looks familiar but I cannot place him. There are just so many talking heads on tv criticizing folk long gone who were once well thought of. I happen to like Gracie and Formsby.

  • Peter Cook is a terd and never did anything for Britan but suck booze and badmouth it! On the other hand Gracie worked non stop for the war effort and kept the hope up for the men.

  • im with Peter Cook on this one.

    'She caused the depression' lol

he is far too witty for croaky hancock who now advertises any old crap.

At least George Formby could play a good uke.

  • Cook is the fastest witted person that has ever lived. You are an idiot on one hand and twice the idiot on the other hand.

  • Gracie is an embarrasment to Lancashire and deserved to go into Room 101, not only did she deafen patrons of record shops, but she joined forces with the Italians in WWII. I hope Hancock suffers for his comments on George Formby.

  • Maybe...but without Gracie we'd never have had Monty Python singing 'Sit on my face....' to the tune of Gracie's 'Sing as you go...'

  • True, but I'm sure someone else would have sang it (possibly Vera Lynn or Anne Shelton)

  • Comment removed

  • But you are wrong, tashkentfox, she did not join forces with the Italians in WWII, she was married to an Italian before the war broke out and was treated badly by the English because of it

  • Oh-poor old Gracie!

  • Hahaha Gracie was massive! A great singer and humorous entertainer. Peter was an ascerbic commentator on life rather than a performer.

Different generations. We all felt that Peter was being very cheeky, but then that was his style.

I vote for Gracie!!!!!! Look out for her Stop and Shop and the Co-op Shop!

  • Gracie went on to be a cult hero in Finland, and Derek and Clive went to see her.

  • Eee nobody can get rid of our Gracie! And as for george he's CHAMPION!

I love their music, films and stories and hope they should live on into the future!

  • Obviously a pair of anti-northern snobs.

  • I'm a big fan of Peter Cook but I don't agree with him about Gracie Fields. She is a legend!

  • good old gracie

  • don't be a w&nker.....

  • Comment removed

  • Hancock's half hour, and he was brilliant... what happened

    to you??

You can't stand in Gracie's or Vera's shoes, you luckily were

not born during the war, or we might have lost it!!

  • I had toothache once and it was absolutely hilarious.

  • Im so glad Merton took over. I only vaguely remembering seeing Hancock on Room 101 growing up, but I never realised how little he let his guests speak. The newer format is so much easier to follow, and also allows people like Peter Cook to show how brilliant they are

  • It's pretty disgraceful that somebody has resorted to making 6 fake accounts just to mod down the people who are defending Gracie from Cook's vitriol. Sure Cook was talented, but is it so painful to admit that so was Gracie?

Of course, I bet I'll now be modded to hell by those 6 fake accounts...

  • good for you. she was a great entertainer, much more funny than this twit.

  • Peter Cook doesn't "talk" about anything .. he can't get a word in .. it's all just Nick Hancock rabbiting on and on and on ...

  • Haha so many people slagging him off for making an honest choice over something he dislikes. :*(

  • I've never heard of him out here in the Canadian colonies.

  • He was the father of the 60s satire boom and votest the best comedian in history many times. He was described by Stephen Fry as 'the funniest man who ever drew breath.'

  • You must have been living in a cave

  • gracie was the biggest film star in the world at one point

  • gracie fields is straight out of eraserhead!

  • He was a very funny man, but also quite a bitter one. He resented the success Dudley Moore had.

  • I'd disagree.. he'd obviously been bitten by Bachus yet chose not to die but to fight back. God bless you Pete.

  • Fuck off peter cook your were crap then and now drunk boring old middle class fart in my room 101 you would be my first choice.

  • That's not fair gf1001, Pete was brilliant and funny, and a gentleman with it, give him a break!

  • LMAO..."I rather fancy this bloke"...

  • I had NEVER heard of Gracie fields!, I heard about her through an audiobook by John Mortimer, where his famous and witty character Barrister Horace Rumpole sings "Walter, Walter lead me to the altar..." And found it awkwardly funny...LOL...This Gracie Fields era was after all a depressing one.

  • "wish me luck as you wave me goodbye" yes fuck off Gracie and don't come back!

  • Peter Cook Lives in more peoples hearts than Gracie; he was a genius, simply a comic genius.

  • Nick is right though, Georgie boy was just as bad! When I'm cleaning windows indeed...

    Peter Cook is a legend.

  • You wouldn't have needed conscription. I'd have gone to Germany to get away from that awful racket!

  • You go Krautie! But don't forget millions died for you!

  • I'd have just gone to Germany. LOL

  • Oh do fuck off you old northern whinge bags. Peter lives on in my loving heart. lol!

  • Peter cook has on numerous occasions been voted the greatest comedian of all time. He paved the way for Monte Python and the entire alternative comedy scene. He was one of the most influential figures in British comedy.

  • Not bad for for somebody who did fuck all for the last 20 years of his life aside from drink himself into a bloated stupor and treating his wives like shit.

  • I find it very disrespectful, to make those comments about a British Star who entertained on film, radio and records, through the depression of the 30s and our troops abroad throughout WW2. If he had a quarter of the fans that she had, he might think himself lucky. I thank her and many like her, who entertained through those bleak times.

  • Oh for fucks sake pass me a bucket.

  • I agree with Peter. Don't you just want to throttle the old bag?

  • "You're not going to give me an urn are you?" Lol!

  • Tragic....it was one of his last ever appearances on tv in 1995. He'd managed to get his life back on track and seemed set to make waves in comedy once more

  • They stopped parliament to listen to her broadcast in the 30s and though the humour and singing is very out of date for today she was hugely popular in her time and a real boost for our grandparants generation in the depressed 30s.

  • I like your vid clip and I've rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on some old cigarette cards of 1930's celebrities, including: Joan Crawford,Shirley Temple, Joan Crawford, Gracie Fields,Kay Francis,Clark Gable,, Greta Garbo, Katherine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers,Norma Shearer.

  • My dad couldn't stand her either, and he was stationed out in North Africa during WW2, and it miffed alot of troops when she buggered off to Pizzaland, not a wise move as Vera Lynn became the forces sweetheart!

  • at least peter cook was in colour

  • I`d rather have Peter Cook representing British people than Gracie Fields. He stayed in Britain as well.

  • "He's never had as many fans as Gracie Fields..."

Oh come off it! Peter Cook was one of the best comedians of his time. Long live Pete (and Dud)

  • I'm sure I feel the same about Peter Cook.... He's never had as many fans as Gracie Fields... She's like the British Lion to most Britons... exceptthe self lothing ones.. the sots...

  • heheheh i love peter cook

  • she deserves it worst enetertaintment and the basis for the average christina aguilera video (and i can t stand her either)

  • Poor Gracie....

  • Leave our Gracie alone, all together now...
