Notice how at 1:53 and 3:27, the video makes the viewer think Ric plays these guitar solos! (No doubt because most Top 40 station listeners didn't know or care.) The fact that Ric went along with this slight-of-hand is pretty lame.
@IntheBloodDoc I don't believe the video makes the viewer think that and a simple reason why is when they show the part of the guitar solo, you can see Elliot is playing left handed, and when they show Ric playing the guitar, he is playing right handed. I would think that would be enough to show it's two different people playing guitar.
I was looking at all the babes on the horse carousel then fucking Gregg passes by with a serious face LOL! This is what makes the Cars great. So classic~
The OOsness just intensifies the creepiness of Ric hanging out by a merry-go-round while hot babes ride it in their bathing suits. He honestly looks like he's a threat to the children.
@louellasnugglebunny You have got to be kidding me! I drive by occasionally on my way to NH, thinking of the good times I had there as a kid. Remember the old wooden roller coaster? Wow...
Brings back wonderful memories of the simpler times. High School, MTV, The Cars, Party's, Friends, Pizza, My First Job, Homework, Friday and Saturday Nights, Driving The Family Station Wagon, The Roller Rinks, The Drive-In Movies, Did I already mention The Cars. Where did all the good times go? Will we ever see those days again? I know The Cars music helps me hold on and Let The Good Times Continue To Roll.
My first 8th grade party. You can only do so much at that age like drink punch and eat cookies, but this song takes me right to that party and the first time I started liking The Cars music.
@spaceorbison Rick had that " cock buried in the ass" tone which explains how "shitty" transforms into "great, witty" by those who have experienced simular experiences
Panorama is the only album other than the first that I listen to front to back. The first album simply is the best. Candy-O has two of my top ten favorites but has a lot of filler IMO. Shake It Up has some nice tunes, but the best got overplayed and the rest aren't great. Heartbeat City is the same way - overplayed the good tunes and rest are O.K. Panorama is consistent and just has an overall color to it, the only other album that had such was the first.
The women that were in 80s videos actually looked like women and not like some today that are all tatted up and look like trash. Remember, folks, I said "some" not "all" women:)
I wish I was on that carousel with Ben....you see the guys go around Ric and you want to say "Wait!" I want to get a better look at the guys....:D It wouldn't be "touch & go" for me....hehe That's the way it is with all their videos, I wish they made a corny Cars movie back then, I would be watching it over and over just I like I do with the Beatles.
Rick Ocasek (this vid) and David Byrne (Once In A Lifetime): nominated for the "Weirdest Dancing In A Music Video" award, early 1980's. The jury's still out. And, man, talk about a boner-go-round in this vid!!!
That carousel looks fun... and suprisingly there's no graffiti or gang members around. What a concept, huh. That's cuz the 80's was the real deal yall! Man that girl at 2:45 looks like she's cumming
WOW! Whalom Park! I have great memories riding that carousel! It would be over 100 years old if it was still in operation. The animals got auctioned off back in 2000. I was always a big fan of the Cars...and Whalom Park.
Yeah, Ocasek is nerdishly in style wearing those suits - even good-looking. I wonder what he would look like in phys-ed sweats or a Taco Bell uniform . . . geeky?
Have always love the song, the video is ok, but the models look bored as h*ll on the merry go round LOL! The Cars definitely one of my top 10 bands of all time.
The footage at Whalom Park was filmed on July 7, 1980. I reported for work around 8 AM and scrubbed and polished the merry-go-round. The crew and the Cars and models arrived around 10 AM and filmed until 6 PM. I am barely visible in the center of the merry-go-round for a few seconds, as I was operating the ride.

@Wurlitzer165nWhalom Wow, after all these years I just learned that this video was shot at Whalom Park which I had gone to at least 3 or 4 times a year from 1968 to when they closed in 2000 ... oh nostalgia
The chicks from :49 -:56 have some nice legs! Im so glad I grew up in this era when you could actually understand music. I could listen the Cars at anytime......love their music.
I remember listening to this song and being told the lead singer was dead. I was like "No way!! Are you serious?!" Then I looked it up and this is Ric Ocasek, Benjamin Orr was the one who died. He did bass and a couple of their songs, he was the second lead vocals.
@roaneraider Well, I think there's a lot of people who think that, and yes, he wrote 99 percent of the lyrics,. But Elliott Eastman hasn't been given enough credit for his incredible lead guitar playing. Not to mention Benjamin Orr, no longer with us, sang a good share of the lead vocals, one of which was "Drive", the only song to make it to number 3 on the top 100 billboard hits of all time.
@mariofan4523 None of them are given the credit they deserve. The cars are my favorite band, but the one song I have to be in the mood for is drive. I just can't set down and listen to it. They rest of them i can listen to all the time.
@mariofan4563 Ric is the icon of the Cars that's why. song writing machine and pretty much the leader, his voice and his appearance are instantly recognizable.
@spaceorbison ...just because I accidently wrote my name in cursive in jizz across your mothers forehead is no reason to call me "faggot", after all -it takes a real man to scald his perfect grammar into the scalp of an older street whore
Although this was made in the 80's with some of the crappiest directors at the time, it is still a Gem. The Lead Guitarist (R.I.P.) on the tea cup ride is just classic. I would have barfed my guts out trying to to play & ride that thing at the same time! LOL
I've always liked this song, but with RIC singing"....All I need is you tonight..." on a merry go round full of beautiful women in their underwear. Seems like he isn't doing too bad for himself. Still love the CARS and the song
I actually like the video. For some reason I find it endearing that The Cars really don't look like rock stars. Ric Ocasek looks like a high school physics teacher and that little nerd on the keyboard looks he's getting an A in his class. They kinda remind me of my old D&D troupe. I love these guys.
haha the video it's so terrible it's hilarious!! lol how the singer moves his shoulders and his suit and....ah it's just funny. Amazing song those, gives me a happy feeling inside :)
Aside from their great music, The Cars meant this to me: Cool style and hot ass chicks. The amount of poon these guys must have conquered would to be staggering to the average guy. Good for them I say. In an era of George Michaels', Boy Georges' and many other fems......these dudes keep the flag raised.
I always thought Ben Orr sang lead on this one. Haha after seeing this video I obviously was wrong. Also, it took me forever to figure out why I couldn't follow along with the verses: the drums and bass are in 5/4, while the vocals and keyboards are in 4/4.
Hey OU812RH-- He made his money,Married Paulina Porizcova and then split--Can't really argue with that--He is a prick for not letting Ben Orr and the boys use the Cars name without him though---
I can't figure out for the life of me why you got 4 thumbs down just for saying something like that - it just happens to be true! People are over sensitive assholes sometimes!
I saw the Cars at Madison Square Garden my friend talked me into going just for the chicks so I did & there certainly were alot of chicks but as for the Cars to this fucking day I'll say they were never really that great live! I always thought they were a studio band!
What a great song from a great band, and such a playfull sound, during the chorus and solo, then so seriouse during the verses, you can feel the wanting verses the truth....so fucking brilliant!!!
PLEASE DON'T READ THIS you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 videos in the next hour. if you do, tomorrow will be the best day of your life
How appropriate that this song were to come out in 1980. Considering the fact that this song described the 1980 Kansas City Royals to a Tee.
As the 1980 Royals was running away with the American League Western Divsion, they "Touched and Went" on to win the American League Pennant that year, for the first time in Franchise History.
Back in 1980, I would be thinking about the Royals, everytime I would hear this song.
For me The Cars provided the soundtrack of my high school years. The Cars and Candy-O came out when I was in grade 9 and 10..and even though this is not as well known I absolutely loved this song.
Completely unforgettable for me. The first time I ever heard it I was a terrified 14 year old on his first date with an equally terrified girl. Therefore, this song is burned into my mind for life.
How the heck frik fire hooty did u know that ? I bet u also knew that this song has one of my fav guitar solos. E.E. has such a touch................and go
haha, I used to live in Leominster, MA and went to Whalom Park all the time. I looked it up the other day on Wikipedia and found out it closed (and that this music video was filmed there).
Indeed! Easton can put more "character" and texture into a solo than anyone else. He never got the recognition he deserved, in my opinion. His solo in this number is exquisite, as well as the work he's done in many other Cars' material.
I love Elliot Easton's playing. Great melody and fire combined in a solo is so rare. They radio edited this song to fit in his full guitar solo at the expense of a verse and chorus ! I don't think that has been done ever. Record chart suicide. But it was worth it. Elliot Easton forever - unsung.
Could not agree with you more. Really worked hard at a different approach, with a distinctive sound unlike any contemporary. Edgy but always always melodic and surpring....not always minor pentatonic variants.
hope elliot didn't get sick spinning and playing like that...i know i would lol

This song is too Rock and Roll to have girls in pink tights on a merry-go-round

Hey OU812RH-- He made his money,Married Paulina Porizcova and then split--Can't really argue with that--He is a prick for not letting Ben Orr and the boys use the Cars name without him though---
EllisonRules 3 years ago
Ben Orr died in 2000. My guess is Ocasek feels that without him, it's just not the Cars...
topshlf 3 years ago
Yep & he's right without Orr it just isn't The Cars! The New Cars just don't cut it even with a very talented Todd Rundgren!

I miss the pointless, fun and crazy videos from the early 80s. Just good songs, crazy clothes, and hot women. Love it!

I saw the Cars at Madison Square Garden my friend talked me into going just for the chicks so I did & there certainly were alot of chicks but as for the Cars to this fucking day I'll say they were never really that great live! I always thought they were a studio band!

I feel some Brian May in this Easton solo (or viceversa)

Completely unforgettable for me. The first time I ever heard it I was a terrified 14 year old on his first date with an equally terrified girl. Therefore, this song is burned into my mind for life.

robi2000 3 years ago
haha, I used to live in Leominster, MA and went to Whalom Park all the time.

I agree Elliot's playing in this and other songs is one of the understated elements of the success of The Cars.

Could not agree with you more. Really worked hard at a different approach, with a distinctive sound unlike any contemporary. Edgy but always always melodic and surpring....not always minor pentatonic variants.
lkoury 3 years ago
EE got after it in several songs..."Bye Bye Love" is one in which he really put together a terrific solo the last part of the song.
Most underrated guitarist.
