oh wow, i can't wait to see this! just googled up some Raymond Scott to play for my daughter b/c i've been singing a bunch of his songs to her, inserting her name into random places... now i'm all impatient to see the doc!
Ugh, "Deconstructing Dad" (the new title of the film) is just a horrible title. Absolutely horrible. Sounds like a teen comedy or some crap. Regardless, I guess, I'd still love to see it.
irlicali...that's the word I had to decipher to keep making comments here. After reading the wonderful Mahatten research booklet, my first though is ..what happened to the great in his house? Did someone get to museum it in the house? Was there a meeting with Les Paul? Etc. Don't forget to let us know how things are going...and of course hope to see the Jim Hensen connection...
Excellent work so far! I just go turned on to your dad a couple of weeks ago, and, being both a soundtrack composer and electronic music nut, I am completely smitten. My only regret is that while I live 10 minutes away from Concordia University, I missed out on the March concert there, not knowing anything about your father at the time... :-( Good luck with the doc - I'll do my best to $upport your efforts later this summer.
aigh! this is going to be fantastic. ever since i read about him in Keyboard Magazine in ~1985/1986 and heard some snippets on their record insert, i've admired Raymond Scott.
i'm so excited about your film--what's the ethereal piece of music that the youtube trailer closes with?
I transcribed "Powerhouse" for my senior jazz recital back in 1986, well before the Scott revival (and eBay, where I now try to devour Scott discs whenever one comes up, especially the original Quintette sides on Master), I was just so thrilled to hear the original recording of it (thanks to Dr Demento) that I wrote it down and did it with the same instrumentation, it went over very well.
Best of success with the film, can't wait to see it!
Thanks for your comment and encouragement, and I'm certainly impressed about that 1986 date--that is well before the revival. Almost no one under 55 would have been aware of Raymond Scott then....
What a cool pioneer. It would be interesting to learn in the DOCU if he was in any way inspired by the work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. He electronium seems to do what the BBCRPS did with tape.
So it is called "Up To Something" or "Deconstructing Dad"?

@drphonic7 Guess you do better in the documentary game if you have a family connection (Stan is Ray's son, btw).

I'm really curious about that too, I've never heard it. Maybe it's on Soothing Sounds for Baby, I've never heard that form beginning to end.
