Kids in Estonia graduate at a younger age than American kids and have the one of the highest literacy rates in the world. I bet half of our American kids don't even know where Estonia is or how to spell it (hint: it's right next to Latvia).

Our parents need to spend more time with their kids and quit counting on our failing education system to fix it or take care of it because frankly, we spend way more on our prisons than we do on education. What kind of education is that?

Ya there is many prizes which they give u-if u r chosen. For instance u get about 10 thousand scholarship-n they will give your school 25,000 which is pretty good right? If you are chosen from the 3 finalist you win a lap top...(n theres many more awards) even though you dont win they give you a certificate that u participated :P

I think your first priority should be learning the English language.

Kool, u, know, 2, and b are not words, and if you write that way on a job application or a college admissions essay, your writing will reflect extremely poorly on you.

Kids will say, "I only write this way on the internet!" but what I've seen in school essays and assignments emphatically proves otherwise. God help us, but texting and AIM are producing an entire generation of illiterate kids.

Though writing "kool" on a job application would be bad, saying that kids are illiterate might be taking it a step too far. They just need reinforcement to learn what's okay and not okay for academic language.

I assume you're a teacher? If so, do a full lesson on what is okay and not okay to write on assignments. Then mark off a point on future assignments whenever they write "2" instead of "two" or "b" instead of "be." Eventually, they'll get the picture.

Nope, not a teacher. I wouldn't have the patience for it. I used to write for a big newspaper, and every year I'd mentor high school kids interested in journalism, and speak to college kids looking to make it their major.

At work, we'd regularly get interns who hadn't mastered the apostrophe. They'd write words like "thru" "payed" "basketball's" "lootenant" and that sort of thing.

I think online communication is a great tool for kids, but I worry about what it's doing to the English language.

What worries me the most is that those kids come to you thinking that they have it in them to be a journalist. One of my friends is a journalism major. He told me once that most of his classmates were just interested in being on television and didn't know the first thing about writing. It's unfortunate. I don't think it's just the internet that's causing it, but the priorities with this generation have changed. I'll agree with you on that.

Correct grammar/spelling doesn't matter as much in this era imo. If you pay too much attention on those, people will think your journalism is boring.

Nowadays, blogs with great CONTENT, despite bad grammar, get more attention than CBS or New York Times or whatever news out there simply because people just want to get the content. they don't give a hood about grammar.
