I trained once under Pak Herman Suwanda,

and I will say that he was number 1 to me as

a teacher and a knowledgeable person about

ancient Indonesian styles of Silat. His 6 or 8 videos that he made with

his student Rene Sanders of Santa Cruz are

the best videos of Silat to see. Herman gives

everything in those videos, and they are filmed

in Indonesia. Three Champions of Silat

in those times in the 80s were Joseph Siregar, Sulaiman Sharif and Herman Suwanda.

My instructor here in Michigan was a student of Pa Herman and Ibu Shannon. Of all of the seminars that I have been to in the last 14 years Pa Herman was my favorite. When you watched Pa and Ibu perform Silat the things you thought were not possiable became possiable.

My Teacher was one of Guru Besar Herman Suwanda's closest student and one of his first fully certified instructors. Guru Herman Suwanda and his wife Shannon (along with others) were killed in a tragic car accident in 2000.

I have several of their videos and they are among my most treasured DVDs of martial arts. I am mostly a tai chi and kali teacher, with my kali style said to be about 25% silat, hence my interest in it, although I've never been fortunate enough to style pure Silat.
