@cadester101 As of very recently, VisionLab is now being discontinued. FXhome has come out with a whole new special effects program call "HitFilm." You can check it out at hitfilm.com or fxhome.com.
@superskeetospro Yeah, you'll get used to it. I think I figured it out in maybe one or two months. It may seem difficult at first, but you'll soon see that the layout is easy to work with. Watching tutorials during that period can be very helpful....you can view some on fxhome.com.
I love FX home Effects!!!! Anyone who wants to see the movie i made with these same effects go to jmdjstudios home page and watch the valor launch trailer
@Ashocka1 I'm not experienced with After Effects, but from what I gather, it is a lot more detailed and versatile (but more difficult to learn and use) than VisionLab. Vlab is still a good program though.
@Ashocka1 Its the same as after effects but much more easier. You can do things that you can do in after effects but it takes you much less time to do it. In FXHome VisionLab you can make a lightsaber and motion track it in 5 minutes. In after effects it takes 10! lol
@broz4lyf It's totally worth it though....it edits video, that's mainly why it costs that much. If you don't like the price, you can buy EffectsLab Pro for $150 or CompositeLab Pro for $150. As the names imply, one specializes in effects and the other specializes more in compositing and grading. VisionLab is basically a combination of the two plus a few extra features.
Sony Vegas is more of an editing program (i.e. cutting and splicing, adding music, basic effects, transitions, text, etc.), while VisionLab is geared more toward detailed visual special effects editing.
You can't work with sound in Vlab (you have to either add sound later or make sure the base file stays the same), but you get highly detailed effects that you can work with down to the very frame. The best thing to do is to edit your footage with your editing program (vegas or platinum) and then add the special effects with Vlab.
@DarthHideous101 Wouldnt you recommend importing edited uncompressed video into vlab cause after effects you still need to reencode in proper format...
I don't have any experience with AE, but yes, I usually import edited uncompressed video onto Vlab (In fact, that's practically the only format it will take, uncompressed avi or mov).
I upload a tape into my computer. It is now an uncompressed avi. I take that avi, edit it in my choice of editor (e.g. Vegas Pro), output that edited video AGAIN as avi uncompressed. THEN I open that edited avi with Vlab...do my effects, export as uncompressed AVI again, then I encode with my choice of encoder (h264, xvid, etc)...do I have the steps correct?
Yes, it's very user-friendly. Just play around with it a lot, watch a bunch of tutorials, and make sure you have good lighting when you use your greenscreen.
I can't, my computer doesn't handle the capturing program fast enough, and I just don't have the time right now, sorry. :/ I'm sure there are many other starter videos out there though, you can check the fxhome website, it has several tutorials in the support section.
You go to the top toolbar, hit 'Render', select 'Render Settings...', choose the settings you want, then go to 'Render' again, and select either 'Render' or 'Render current frame'
FXhome programs render with no sound, unless the video file imported is kept at the same, uncut duration, that the project is as long as the file, that it is rendered as the same format, and that the sound is based to that file (see the fxhome website for details). I personally never render with sound, because my projects tend to get complex, so I just re-dub the sound back in later on another program.
I was never able to render when I had the demo, but that was a long time ago, and I think they allow it now, it just renders with a watermark on it....
If you're having problems with the duration, make sure the in and out points (start and end points) are selected over the entire project, of just the part you want to render.

DarthHideous101 2 years ago
That's the FXhome watermark that appears on all demos; in order to not have that, you have to buy the software.
DarthHideous101 2 years ago
Could I take photographs or footage of say, a street, and import that as my backdrop in VisionLab? Or do I need to download this kinda stuff?

Yeah, you could definitely do that.

how do you import a video to fxhome??
Rektor99 2 years ago
Yeah! its realy cool, but, after you finish the project, how you export it?
LuiDeca 3 years ago
You go to the top toolbar, hit 'Render', select 'Render Settings...', choose the settings you want, then go to 'Render' again, and select either 'Render' or 'Render current frame'
DarthHideous101 3 years ago
When I did that it would render it with no sound and then it wouldn't play. It would say that the video was 0 seconds long.
So can you not render it with the demo or something?
pinkyandthesheep 2 years ago
FXhome programs render with no sound, unless the video file imported is kept at the same, uncut duration, that the project is as long as the file, that it is rendered as the same format, and that the sound is based to that file (see the fxhome website for details). I personally never render with sound, because my projects tend to get complex, so I just re-dub the sound back in later on another program.

DarthHideous101 2 years ago
Yeah I finally got it. I rendered it with no sound and then added the sound from the original clip back. It worked fine.
Thanks for the info though
