Uh huh. Thats the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. They couldn't come up with a better pretext to get this man out of his house then a "red headed league". I assume thats what someone is doing. Argggh. These things suck. No logic to be found in any of these plots. But what i wanted to know could anyone possibly ever download the Cadfael Mysteries? Those are cool. Amazon wants 100 dollars for a season and thats not to own, but just to watch it once! I can not pay that. Its outrageous.
Just before this bit, when Holmes is talking about John Clay (the guy who tries to rob the bank for Moriarty,) he says, "...He was educated at Eaton and Oxford, so Watson...? Bring your gun."
Yes, because one must ALWAYS carry a gun when dealing with a man educated at Eaton and Oxford!
'The Red-Headed League' is a brilliant episode, I never tire of watching it. Or Jeremy Brett!
Moriarty was a nemesis created by Doyle to end the Sherlock Holmes stories, with his death in the final problem. He certainly wasn't a recuring criminal element in the stories. I can see the attraction of the arch villian, but it isn't accurate to the Holmes canon.
How many actualy stories was Proffesor Moriarty in?
I have the mp3 of an episode of the Basil Rathbone radio show "Proffesor Moriarty and the Diamond Jubilee" and they mentioned that he was gone for six years after their last fight in Switzerland, I think.
The Three Doyle stories that have Moriarty in them or a mention of his involvement are 'The Final Problem' (where Holmes battles him to the death and both men are assumed to have died)
'The Empty House' (where Holmes returns from the dead and reveals how he defeated Moriarty and went into hiding from his gang and how he finally defeated Col Sebastian Moran, Moriarty's second in command) 'The Valley Of Fear' (a memorable story that has Moriarty as a menacing off screen character prior to TFP)
I've been asking the same question. This is one of the best Brett/Holmes episodes, especially the part where they kill themselves laughing towards the beginning of the episode.
If I remember correctly, Moriarty isn't really mentioned in the original story, but back referenced as being behind this scheme in "The Final Problem". It's wonderful that they referred to him in this dramatized version. Moriarty is indeed the world's first super villan.
Absolutely correct.Eric Porter did a fantastic job as Moriarty in this episode made the story even more interesting.I really liked the way Jeremy Brett described the qualities of the brilliant and scheming Moriarty.
That's right. Moriarty was only seen in one story, "The Final Problem", and was mentioned in "The Empty House", The Valley of Fear, and a handful of other stories after the return; with the exception of The Valley of Fear and "The Final Problem", Holmes was referring to how boring criminal life had gotten since Moriarty died.

I cannot help but think that the guy playing Sherlock Holmes studied Kenneth Williams' manners and facial looks.

Interesting at 7:30 how they use dialog from "The Final Problem" to discuss Moriarity.
