Nice work (as usual) Keith. Opeth and Mikael in particular are just astounding, it seems like they can just bring together so many generes and make them sound new and unique. They are the perfect band. The only thing they havent added in yet is some good Bootsy Collins/ George Clinton style funk..... but I am sure that will be next, just to keep us guessing.

it doesn't matter if a solo is easy or difficult to play.....it's the feeling and the vibe that matters...comfortably numb solo is not complicated but by far one of the greatest guitar solos ever....and so does Born solo from nevermore which is complicated but also kick ass solo.... :P

though simple, I would definitely not say that this solo is "easy to play", at least not to play it accurately and well! Unless, like in this case of Keiths rendition, you have the perfect vibrato and detailing in your playing like Mikael Akerfeldt does with the specific phrasing/slides/bends, which comes solely from feel and emotion - it is going to sound like shit no matter how easy you think it is to play. So props to you, Mr. Merrow! Very nice cover of one of my favorite solos ever as well!

i respect the fact that you enjoy solos like this, most people think that if its not super shredtacular than it sucks, opeth is one of my favorite bands and their solos are so good, good job man.

@weemankyle I only really like guitar solos if they "speak" to me. I'm not really into shred solos, and I definitely prefer solos that have a lot of heart, as this one does. It doesn't have to be fast, and it doesn't have to be complicated to be "good". This solo is there to compliment the song, not to show off insane skill. That's why I think it's awesome. People who say "it's easy to play" are right, but they are missing the point. It's well written. Mikael Åkerfeldt is awesome.

You know, just your basic fret-board jack off for absolutely no reason other than "WHEEE"! Loomis is on a whole different planet. He plays interesting, insane fast shred, but with a lot of emotion behind it. Not to mention Jeff is my friend and I admire his playing a great deal.

@diobolic5150 with all respect: i would not put hammett and kerry king into the same category. kerry's solos are soulless, and they meant to be. but hammett did some truly great stuff, like creeping death, master, leper messiah, dyers eve, sanitarium, shortest straw, fade to black and so on. it's kind of chic to throw some shit on kirk, but truth is that he can be melodic and soulful, too. (kill'em all solos are pointless in a way, but those are actually some mustaine solos played by hammett.)
