@tvoice1 not true. ATC must speak in a country language or English up to pilot decision. In countries where English is not welcome like Spain or France lots of pilots speak in their languages... but always they can switch to English anytime.
@plsniper a crash landing is when you are in the plane, an emergency crash landing would be if i was in that sumbitch......i dont fly well and watching all this youtube doom and gloom aint helping....but i watch anyway
good job on his part too...people can say what they want in youtube comments about how they would've handled it, what they would have done differently and how they could have pulled it off better...but that's all a big steaming pile of horse shit because until you've been tested in the way this guy was, you really have not a clue how you would handle it despite what you think
Hmm I think.... I'd come in low and a bit fast with full flaps, shut the engine/fuel off, and bleed off the speed at 10th above the ground until I heard the horn, then let it come down. Saves some money on the engine/prop work, and seems safe enough. Great job tho, I like how he chose the grass rather than the runway
@DiamondPilotDan Shutting the engine/fuel off kills your options if someone, something, emergency vehicle, etc. quickly comes into view and you realize your only options are hit the object or stall/incipient spin/cartwheel. Once you declare an emergency, the insurance company owns the airplane. Your only job at that point is to keep yourself and your pax safe. Keeping the engine on is YOUR insurance policy; let your airplane insurance policy pay for your new engine and prop!
@DiamondPilotDan He tried to stop the propeller already in the air at stall speed but w/o effect. Anyway it was a quite profitable crash engine was short to overhaul period so a new one was paid by insurance company instead by owner.
@acefrehl3y That's what I keep hearing too. I cranked up my volume real high and I can barely hear the announcer say, "What an asshole! He shouldn't even be up there!"
My only critique was the early shutdown of the engine on first pass; as long as the plane's still flyable and you have plenty of fuel, you can do as many go-arounds as you want before you commit, hell with the other pilots in the area, they are only pressure against you. Then you can kill the engine a few hundred feet up, position the prop and glide it in. But it was your landing, not mine, and you did it superbly!
Good idea for the grass landing, but with my experience and textbook rules the landing gear shouldn't be down if 2/3 gears do not deploy, so if You only have 1 gear, you have to land belly flat. More safer than a gear that came off and is bouncing everywhere which can pose as a risk to safety.
ive witnessed the same incident with a 210 and they wouldnt do the low approaches to burn off fuel can always just hold it would be much safer to burn fuel that way he did the low approaches to probably trouble shoot the malfunction and get the feel of the conditions for the approach as well as the pilot cant see the landing gear for most planes
A 210 with standard tanks can fly for about 4.5 hours. You can do 5 TO's and landings per hour (easily); his few attempts would not have even burned off a quarter of the fuel so I doubt he was trying to burn off fuel. From first hand experience I can tell you he was scared yet trying to get the best possible conditions for a landing. I love the fact that they had hardly stopped moving when the tower said good job, they SHOULD have said "turn off mags, get out fast, rescue is on the way".
Oh boy, an ATC told me "Good Luck" while I miss reported "Thirty Thousand feet" as my cruising altitude rather than "Thirty hundred." I suppose I was "b" category!! :)
I've never seen that before. 1 gear? After 3 tries, he chose a smart thing to do and landed on the grass, to avoid closing the airport and adding sparks when the undercarrage hit the ground.
@AirCanada04 He most likely made multiple passes to burn down fuel before finally landing. Less fuel is less landing weight meaning you can make a slower final approach. Obviously being slower is good as far as reducing damage and chance of injury, and less fuel is good in a crash-landing for avoiding a fire.
@itsmonti1 a landing is nothing more than a controlled crash, and I AM an instructor. :) I usually tell my students "any plane we can reuse after landing was a good landing"
@umahuma4 ..There is an alarm that goes off when the throttle is pulled back to a certain point without the landing gear being fully down..as in this case. In a normal situation it would serve as a reminder to the pilot to put his feet (landing gear) down.
@ZBWDO of course yes. But with no hydraulic oil in the gear system a manual pump procedure is useles. Emergency gear extension in Cessna is just "electric pump override". Without hydraulic pressure manual pump will not help. Pretty stupid system I have to say.
Aren't the controllers supposed to be speaking English?

This title makes me wonder. What's the difference between an emergency crash landing and a crash landing?
plsniper 2 weeks ago
@plsniper maybe because the plane declared emergency before the crash landing

@602780573 :) Ok, I'll buy that. :)

A good landing is one you can walk away from. An excellent landing is one where you can use the plane again afterward.

I was afraid he was going to be stupid and try to land on one wheel. He would then have died a firey crash.

Not a 'crash' landing at all. Just a gear up belly landing.

@flexairz that's a crash landing. the word crash doesn't always mean rippling metal and explosions

@AMT4245 In this case it was a gear up landing, no matter how you want to call it.

@602780573 Its a 3 blade prop. There is no use in stopping it, its going to contact the ground either way.

It was missing the emergency procedure as FlyinandDrivin said.
In addition I would try to touch with the minimum speed and full flaps extended.
I could no hear the sound of the stall horn.

Good Job landing it so no one was hurt.
Just a few things to remember for the Future.
1. Before landing, Mixture Idle Cut-Off
2. Ignition Key Off and Out
3. Open cabin door to prevent jams caused by airframe distortion.
