Comic sans is the best font because besides looking obviously elegant and beautiful it will reveal which people around you are insufferable graphic designer dorks who actually have strong feelings about something as inconsequential as a dumbass childrens font. You never know where these people might be lurking and its best to find out sooner than later so you can minimize the emotional impact of telling them that you don't want to be in their presence ever again

@version191: In all fairness, there are lots of examples where using comic sans is, quite frankly, an incredibly poor choice. Would you go into a business interview for an office job wearing sweatpants, a t-shirt, and sandals? Well, that's the vibe that comic sans gives off. If you're writing a resume, you should probably stick to Caslon or Garamond. Likewise, Comic Sans looks odd on things like warning signs and church bulletins.

The whole Comic Sans starts with a C and people don't go down the list is a really good point. I think laziness explains alot of the human condition. :) Nice video. ^_^

@OkalRelsDaughter: No, it doesn't. If that was the case, everyone would just use Adobe typefaces or Aachen. Why not use Clarendon? People gravitate to it because of its highly humanistic nature. It looks very organic and natural compared to Helvetica, which is actually comforting to some people. Comic Sans can certainly be used well. Example: Beanie Babies. However, sometimes you don't want your signage to convey comfort and using it can be a bad design choice.

@OverbearingUrge Well yeah it has to be good but also it is up top and also it is organic and natural. I am just saying it was a good point I didn't think of. People skip through the top ten fonts and pick the one that apeal the best which would be Comic Sans. And yeah it works really well for Beanie babies. I don't think it would work well for an essay though. :)

It was originally designed for Microsoft Bob, a children's game for Win 95. People complained that the speech bubbles for the game's cartoon dog were in Times New Roman; and Comic Sans was the quickly designed solution for a comic-like font.

COMIC Sans has 'correct' uses, but people (designers included) seem to miss the obvious.

All I'm hearing from this is that don't like the font; probably because you heard you were supposed to not like it, and that you should like Helvetica instead.

Now, when is there a time when Helvetica is needed over, say, Univers? Furthermore, the fact that so many use Helvetica for their computer's type shows how little they really know. Why are people using display fonts for small text?

See Erik Spikermann's bit about Helvetica to understand a bit of Helvetica's flaws. It's not terrible type by any means, but the praise it gets is a vastly overblown.

@552Industries: Futura, Univers, Gill Sans, then there's the army of Helvetica clones. Or, you could just go back to the typeface that Helvetica tried to outdo, and use Akzidenz Grotesk. Personally, I like transitional fonts on my computer screen, but if you have to use sans serif, the kerning in Univers and Akzidenz Grotesk are way better than Helvetica. I use the "porn pom pom" test when assigning digital type.

@552Industries lol No problem! Helvetica is a nice typeface, and it has its uses, but many just apply the "one ring" philosophy and just use it on EVERYTHING. The biggest offense, to me, is when people use it for body text. Helvetica has a lot more humanistic touches than Akzidenz, but the letter spacing is still monotonous and uniform. Meanwhile, Univers adjusts the kerning, making the spacing seem more natural.
