I'm a huge U2 fan, but this song is not that great - seriously. It has no creativity in it. Even when Bono sneezes, he can't help but emit something beautiful and different. But this, this song is not that. My five year old niece could come up with something more refreshing.
Unbelievable that this was a Joshua Tree (throw away). This would have been a hit single for any other band at that time. This is why U2 was the greatest rock band of its era and a huge influence for future bands (Ex. Killers, Cold Play)
@DarkAcrobat tell me if you would ever say that a person from the US has "English eyes"... believe me, to be Mexican is veeeery different from being Spanish... learn to understand the context, dumbass
@jameabeto Stupid, any person from US, could be have "english eyes", or "irish eyes", any mexican , or argentinian or peruvian could be have "spanish eyes" too, is perfectly valid, butthead.

That was their best moments of u2. But their are greats right now anyway

Are you crazy) This man Bono cannot even carry a tune. His voice is awful. On top of that, he cannot even hold an octave. I know that any good singer anywhere, in any language, can sing better than Bono.
Compared to Brian Wilson, John Lennon, Mick Hucknall or Marvyn Gay and Teddy Pendergrass, Bono is nothing but a two-bit singer of bad music. I am not surprised that he is popular, though, because it goes to show you how far down music has gone and how much farther down it could go. Rolando

@cochranexyz I guess I aged myself by calling it a B side, but so what. I've been a U2 fan since 1980 and have seen them about 30 times. And no, I don't think there is a term for B sides anymore. :)
@MrTamaguy I know it blows me away it was a "b"side. It just goes to show how great and special The Joshua Tree is, that album still stands the test of time..
This is taken from a programme called "Outside Its America" which was screened in many provinces at the end of 1987. The Joshua Tree album came out that April and they toured for the rest of the year. I think it was the only time this video, screened as part of the one hour programme, was ever shown. The typeface at the start of this clip, where it says "Spanish Eyes", confirms its from that programme. This was the b-side to "I Still Haven't Found" or maybe "With Or Without You". One of those.
MORE: A clue to the meaning of the song: many Irish Republicans fought in the Spanish Civil War, they are still commemerated regularly in Northern Ireland. This song possibly refers to that - the line "I crossed the world for green and gold" is clearly a reference to the Irish flag, and the Spanish reference is obviously there in the title. This is only a theory. Then again, maybe the song doesnt mean anything. It wouldn't be the first U2 song to have bizarre lyrics and no definate meaning! Lol!
at first glance it seems like a fun throwaway song about sex (U2 didn't really sing about sex til the 90s) but it's hard to imagine Bono writing lyrics without subtle meanings in them so that is a possiblity
In "In A Little While" from All That You Can't Leave Behind, there is a line that say, "A little girl with Spanish eyes/When I saw her first in a pram they pushed her by/Oh my have you've grown/Well it's, it's been...a little while."
Maybe...that reminds me of Manic Street Preachers, and their song "if you tolerate this".The part which says "so if I can shoot rabbits, then I can shoot fascists" is in memory of those soldiers from Wales who helped Spanish republicans in the civil war...
In spain, darker skin comes from jews, not moorish, when, in 1492, after peninsula reconquering, they were forced to to turn into christians. Moorish were expelled from spain (not spain yet), bequeathing very little small of blood of some spaniards.
Spaniards are celtics from the north, and iberians from the east in a beggining. German, roman, and moorish invasions came after. Many many many blood came from the north. I have white features, almost blonde, grey eyes, and i'm spanish.
That is quite true, almost all the northern Spain has a huge celtic influence. You can notice it by some of the symbols of the ancient cultures that today people from there are trying to preserve, which are celtic, also the strong influence of celtic mythology (dwarfs, fairies, witches etc).If there's anyone who's interested,I would recommend him/her to visit specially Cantabria (and there in concret La Vega de Pas, part of my roots), where you can find all these things.
saying that any child born in the uk of african or carribean parents in the last decade aren't black british because their parents didn't come to britain on the windrush. i think sfumato spends a bit too much time with his head in books.
my family are not. plexusnexus's version of the moores is the one i learned in school in andalucia, also the further north you get the fairer the spanish get. Red hair and green eyes anothercommon irish trait is from mixing dark hair brown eyes with fair hair and blue eyes but the vikings spread all over the place didn't they so many of them had red hair. i think you'll find most races are very mixed so to say all black irish are solely from celtic stock is a bit naive, its a bit like saying
yes i know where the celts come from i can also read and i like discovery channel too. I lived in malaga for 5 years so i know spanish history too. but as you are are soooo keen to repeat your self i will do the same, my ancestor came from spain via the armada. my husband is black our children are quite light, shows what one dilution of the genes does so imagine many. unlike you i'm not pig headed enough to say that you are totally wrong i'm sure some black irish are as you say but i know that
irish people are made up of lots of races, celts, vikings pics and yes even anglo saxon. the black irish come from the spanish armada. when it was split up many ships wandered and were wrecked on irish cornish and scottish coasts
just type "celtic spain" on youtube. Wow, black irish comes from Spain? LOL, never heard of that term hahaha. Maybe it has to do with Irish Americans in the USA. But I never heard that term in Europe. Read some books on the origin of Ireland.
I beg that you pick up a history book and find out were those celts came from that arrived to Ireland in 500BC...way before the spanish Armada. Did you know north of Spain is Celtic? Spaniards are black? Okay, hit the books, better yet, travel the world and expand your education.
yes i do know this! i also know that ireland has been conquored by the vikings and god knows who else since then and a lot of that will have mixed it down, and for your info I am black irish and my ancester come from the armada and married a local girl after being ship wrecked so i dont need to pick up my books and i'm already well travelled thank you very much. take some of your own advice I'm speaking from traceable family knowledge passed down not from a book!!!!
Black people in the spanish armada+, I was unaware the Kingdom of Castile had black soldiers. You should check your ancestry again. No offence intended. But Spain was a great catholic power, this included wars with the moors, and arab countries. It is impossible you ancestry comes from the Spanish Armada. Also, yes, Irish are mixed with alot of races from Europe. But the origins are celts from the north of Spain.
the moors got themsves plenty of ' spanish' pussy. guess thats why the spaniards have a little moore (lol) colour to them than lets say your typical ango saxon
i just guess that spanish womenjust loved big black african bone dick :)
maybe I guess in the south of Spain. But the moors never conquered the north of Spain. Asturias, Galicia, basque country, catalonia, even Madrid is all christian. Except for Andalucia which the moors did stay there, but true spaniards are white, not anglo-saxon white because we are more latin. so don't generalize dumb shit. Also Spain has more history than you little island there. You must be ignorant to make such a dumb shit racist comment like that. I have nothing against black people.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
...if we are mixed, why we can't carry caucasian blood in our veins?.
...and a last comment before ending. In great bretain, perfect white couples haves mid-black mixed childs... oh, look at that, there are so many pussies that tried a big black meat too, and that is not a legend, it happens... ;)
look you in a mirror, you don't know, but you have a past running ahead lions... how many vice i see here XD
And if you find dark skined spaniards, then they are gipsies, not full Iberians, or mixed with morrish blood. This is only in the southern part of Spain were Flamenco comes from. The north and central part of Spain is as white are russia. Like in Italy, sicilians are darker than north Italians.
I said celts from the Basque region, but also in Galicia, Asturias and most nothern spanish country, the bagpipe is the national instrument in all northern Spain. check youtube under spanish bagpipes, galician bagpipes, asturias bagpipes, oviedo, lugo, etc...
Flamenco is only played in a small part of southern spain, but again, most americans don't know that.
The gene patterns of the three races, welsh, irish and spanish basque passed down through the male line are all "strikingly similar", researchers concluded in BBC. Besides that the Bagpipe is on of the most typical musical instrument in northern Spain specially in Galicia.
Ali's family is spanish Irish. The mixture of Irish and Spanish blood dating from the time of the Spanish Armada, when many shipwrecked Spanish sailors were washed up on the Irish coastline and wound up staying. Many Irish families have Spanish ancestry. learn you history bro. Ali may be from Ireland but her roots are mostly from Spain.
If I'm not mistaken, that specific strain of Irish ancestry is called "Black Irish." My birth mother (I'm adopted) was described as Black Irish. I suspect Philomena Lynott, mother of the sainted Philip, had some Black Irish ancestry, as well.
Interesting, how Irish military disasters have scattered the seed of Eire in some unlikely places. Thanks to the San Patricio Brigade in the Mexican-American War we can find red-headed Mexicans with surnames like "Ferrell"!
Yup, you are mistaken. Spaniards arent' black. The term black irish is probably from the the mexican-american war, because that term is from the USA? You know americans are ignorant and call mexican spanish. Anyway, I'm talking about the spanish armada from spain. Besides that in spain the celts from the basque country had ties with ireland and scotland. The Welsh and Irish Celts have been found to be the genetic blood-brothers of Basques, scientists have revealed according to the BBC.
Hold up just a second. I'm talking about two entirely different things.
"Black Irish" has NOTHING to do with African ancestry; people of that description usually have dark hair and fair skin, as do many people from Spain.
The San Patricios fought hundreds of years after Drake sank the Spanish Armada in a conflict that took place a continent and an ocean away from the Mexican-American War.
Then I don't know what your point was. I was referring that this song is about his wifes ancestry and in fact that of ireland. Then you brought up the "black irish term" which has nothing to do with Spain or Ireland. Again search "Spain and Ireland Part 1 of 10" on youtube. "black isish" is a term used in the states I guess, I never heard the term and it has nothing to do with Irish history. The point is Spain an Ireland have a history going back thousands of years.
Another thing you need to keep in mind is that you are problable from the USA, and most americans know very little about the history of Europe and specially Spain. It's not rare to see americans confuse Spain with Mexico. You even call latin americans "Hispanics" when that term in strictly only for the Iberian Peninsula. Having Mexico so close to the USA an the fact that they speak spanish, you probably figure Mexican=Spanish LOL.
You're probably right about American provincialism, unfortunately. But as I noted elsewhere, I wasn't confusing "Mexican" with "Spanish."
I've lived abroad, visited a half-dozen countries on three continents (not the Iberian Peninsula, alas -- although my wife has), speak three languages and read several more, and -- being Latino myself -- recognize that the term "Hispanic" was adopted for the convenience of demographers at the expense of accuracy.

Lol!
MySeif2282 3 years ago
at first glance it seems like a fun throwaway song about sex (U2 didn't really sing about sex til the 90s) but it's hard to imagine Bono writing lyrics without subtle meanings in them so that is a possiblity
RuskNation61 2 years ago
This is a song Bono wrote about his wife. She is of Spanish descent. It is a love song.

In "In A Little While" from All That You Can't Leave Behind, there is a line that say, "A little girl with Spanish eyes/When I saw her first in a pram they pushed her by/Oh my have you've grown/Well it's, it's been...a little while."
butterflyhope333 2 years ago 2
Maybe...that reminds me of Manic Street Preachers, and their song "if you tolerate this".The part which says "so if I can shoot rabbits, then I can shoot fascists" is in memory of those soldiers from Wales who helped Spanish republicans in the civil war...

i dont think song reffers to eyes from spain. spanish as in hispanic or latino in general and the "blue" is sad eyes.
And it is a very beautiful song.
moonflower0924 3 years ago
In spain, darker skin comes from jews, not moorish, when, in 1492, after peninsula reconquering, they were forced to to turn into christians. Moorish were expelled from spain (not spain yet), bequeathing very little small of blood of some spaniards.
Spaniards are celtics from the north, and iberians from the east in a beggining. German, roman, and moorish invasions came after. Many many many blood came from the north. I have white features, almost blonde, grey eyes, and i'm spanish.
Ralph007es 3 years ago 2
That is quite true, almost all the northern Spain has a huge celtic influence. You can notice it by some of the symbols of the ancient cultures that today people from there are trying to preserve, which are celtic, also the strong influence of celtic mythology (dwarfs, fairies, witches etc).If there's anyone who's interested,I would recommend him/her to visit specially Cantabria (and there in concret La Vega de Pas, part of my roots), where you can find all these things.

my family are not. plexusnexus's version of the moores is the one i learned in school in andalucia, also the further north you get the fairer the spanish get. Red hair and green eyes anothercommon irish trait is from mixing dark hair brown eyes with fair hair and blue eyes but the vikings spread all over the place didn't they so many of them had red hair. i think you'll find most races are very mixed so to say all black irish are solely from celtic stock is a bit naive, its a bit like saying
raychibabe 3 years ago
yes i know where the celts come from i can also read and i like discovery channel too.

So back to my first post before getting interrupted....this song is about Irish having spanish ancestry, in fact Irish people originated from Spain.
sfumato1002 3 years ago 3
irish people are made up of lots of races, celts, vikings pics and yes even anglo saxon. the black irish come from the spanish armada. when it was split up many ships wandered and were wrecked on irish cornish and scottish coasts
raychibabe 3 years ago
there are also black scottish and cornish people they're just not called that. my family are black irish this is how i know
raychibabe 3 years ago
just type "celtic spain" on youtube. Wow, black irish comes from Spain? LOL, never heard of that term hahaha. Maybe it has to do with Irish Americans in the USA. But I never heard that term in Europe. Read some books on the origin of Ireland.
sfumato1002 3 years ago
I beg that you pick up a history book and find out were those celts came from that arrived to Ireland in 500BC...way before the spanish Armada. Did you know north of Spain is Celtic? Spaniards are black? Okay, hit the books, better yet, travel the world and expand your education.
sfumato1002 3 years ago
yes i do know this! i also know that ireland has been conquored by the vikings and god knows who else since then and a lot of that will have mixed it down, and for your info I am black irish and my ancester come from the armada and married a local girl after being ship wrecked so i dont need to pick up my books and i'm already well travelled thank you very much. take some of your own advice I'm speaking from traceable family knowledge passed down not from a book!!!!
raychibabe 3 years ago
Black people in the spanish armada+, I was unaware the Kingdom of Castile had black soldiers. You should check your ancestry again. No offence intended. But Spain was a great catholic power, this included wars with the moors, and arab countries. It is impossible you ancestry comes from the Spanish Armada. Also, yes, Irish are mixed with alot of races from Europe. But the origins are celts from the north of Spain.
sfumato1002 3 years ago
Anglo Saxon's are mostly English, sure there are mixes in Ireland because they are on the same land. But Irish are Celts.
sfumato1002 3 years ago
Why I'm arguing with you...LOL, whatever, if you want to change history in your head that is fine. see ya!
sfumato1002 3 years ago
the moors got themsves plenty of ' spanish' pussy. guess thats why the spaniards have a little moore (lol) colour to them than lets say your typical ango saxon
i just guess that spanish womenjust loved big black african bone dick :)
plexusnexus 3 years ago
maybe I guess in the south of Spain. I have nothing against black people.
sfumato1002 3 years ago
'more history than you (sic) little island'
lol
sure did a great job in latin america....
and spain is on of the most racist countries on the planet.
you are all mixed race and you cant stand it.

...and a last comment before ending. In great bretain, perfect white couples haves mid-black mixed childs... oh, look at that, there are so many pussies that tried a big black meat too, and that is not a legend, it happens... ;)
look you in a mirror, you don't know, but you have a past running ahead lions... how many vice i see here XD
Ralph007es 2 years ago
And if you find dark skined spaniards, then they are gipsies, not full Iberians, or mixed with morrish blood. This is only in the southern part of Spain were Flamenco comes from. The north and central part of Spain is as white are russia. Like in Italy, sicilians are darker than north Italians.
sfumato1002 3 years ago 2
actually search "Spain and Ireland Part 1 of 10" on youtube.

sfumato1002 3 years ago
I said celts from the Basque region, but also in Galicia, Asturias and most nothern spanish country, the bagpipe is the national instrument in all northern Spain. check youtube under spanish bagpipes, galician bagpipes, asturias bagpipes, oviedo, lugo, etc...
Flamenco is only played in a small part of southern spain, but again, most americans don't know that.
sfumato1002 3 years ago
The gene patterns of the three races, welsh, irish and spanish basque passed down through the male line are all "strikingly similar", researchers concluded in BBC. Besides that the Bagpipe is on of the most typical musical instrument in northern Spain specially in Galicia.

Ali's family is spanish Irish. The mixture of Irish and Spanish blood dating from the time of the Spanish Armada, when many shipwrecked Spanish sailors were washed up on the Irish coastline and wound up staying. Many Irish families have Spanish ancestry. learn you history bro. Ali may be from Ireland but her roots are mostly from Spain.
sfumato1002 3 years ago
If I'm not mistaken, that specific strain of Irish ancestry is called "Black Irish." My birth mother (I'm adopted) was described as Black Irish. I suspect Philomena Lynott, mother of the sainted Philip, had some Black Irish ancestry, as well.
Interesting, how Irish military disasters have scattered the seed of Eire in some unlikely places. Thanks to the San Patricio Brigade in the Mexican-American War we can find red-headed Mexicans with surnames like "Ferrell"!
Kirok 3 years ago
Yup, you are mistaken. Spaniards arent' black. The term black irish is probably from the the mexican-american war, because that term is from the USA? You know americans are ignorant and call mexican spanish. Anyway, I'm talking about the spanish armada from spain. Besides that in spain the celts from the basque country had ties with ireland and scotland. The Welsh and Irish Celts have been found to be the genetic blood-brothers of Basques, scientists have revealed according to the BBC.
sfumato1002 3 years ago
Hold up just a second. I'm talking about two entirely different things.
"Black Irish" has NOTHING to do with African ancestry; people of that description usually have dark hair and fair skin, as do many people from Spain.
The San Patricios fought hundreds of years after Drake sank the Spanish Armada in a conflict that took place a continent and an ocean away from the Mexican-American War.
Kirok 3 years ago
Then I don't know what your point was. I was referring that this song is about his wifes ancestry and in fact that of ireland. Then you brought up the "black irish term" which has nothing to do with Spain or Ireland. Again search "Spain and Ireland Part 1 of 10" on youtube. "black isish" is a term used in the states I guess, I never heard the term and it has nothing to do with Irish history. The point is Spain an Ireland have a history going back thousands of years.
sfumato1002 3 years ago
Another thing you need to keep in mind is that you are problable from the USA, and most americans know very little about the history of Europe and specially Spain. It's not rare to see americans confuse Spain with Mexico. You even call latin americans "Hispanics" when that term in strictly only for the Iberian Peninsula. Having Mexico so close to the USA an the fact that they speak spanish, you probably figure Mexican=Spanish LOL.
sfumato1002 3 years ago 2
You're probably right about American provincialism, unfortunately. But as I noted elsewhere, I wasn't confusing "Mexican" with "Spanish."
I've lived abroad, visited a half-dozen countries on three continents (not the Iberian Peninsula, alas -- although my wife has), speak three languages and read several more, and -- being Latino myself -- recognize that the term "Hispanic" was adopted for the convenience of demographers at the expense of accuracy.
