@huntingbob05 Good vid man..but Ive noticed in all these bow drill videos Ive seen on you tube never once, does anyone explain how to tie the string to the bow..You should explain how to tie it on and how to tighten it, using a clove hitch or slip knot..or make a longer string or use the egyptian style.
i cant even get mine to start smoking there is dust in the bottom but no coal. i have actually burnt myself on the spindle but i cant seem to lite the dust please help
i try this all the time but cant get a coal, im using cedar board and spindle, i can get it smoking like crazy but all i get is brown dust not a coal, any suggestions?
@GhillieNova hey thanks for the advice! i actually figured it out, basically what has worked for me was alot of downward pressure and slower spinning at first to build up a pile of "dust" then let up the pressure so that you dont create more dust and then had alot of speed, which will turn the dust to a coal! i dont know about you but it works for me every time!
Chee-rist. This is much, much harder than it looks. Assembling the bowdrill is easy. What's harder is getting it to smoulder like that. If you plan on relying on this method in an emergency future situation, you best get some practice first.
Not exactly ice but once I used a magnifying glass to set newspapers on fire using sunlight, the same concept may also be applicable to ice but I doubt we can ever find such a fine natural lens made of ice.
Yes there is a limit 2 the amount of times you can use the same notch and drill tip. The best wood 2 use is dry and medium density. The ember should come from both the base board and the drill. The pressure varies. First you need the dust 2 form in the notch. This requires more pressure. Second you need heat so the ember forms. This requires faster drilling and slightly less pressure. I hope this helps.
I am going to be making another video addressing the problems that many people have when they are learning to make fire with a bow drill. I hope to have the video posted within 2 weeks.
I was using extremely dry pine needles and thin shavings of various pine woods. It also depends on what's available it the time. Birch bark is great once you have flame. It goes up just like its soaked in gas.
my spindle bit has a shinny coat on the end does this mean its resinous wood and no good ?

how come the wood piece that spins wont spin when i do it
poopmcscoopface 1 year ago
@poopmcscoopface It probably wont spin because your string in not tight enough around the spindle. Tighten it up and try it.

@Vurtsk8er2297 Try slightly less pressure and more speed.

everyone must know!... start of slow then after 15 sec put some pressure and go faster!!!

@mmiller6465 im no expert but a little bit more downward pressure should do the trick.

What are you using now? It may not be the spindle thats causing you problems. Maybe its your fire board.
huntingbob05 2 years ago

I've been practicing this for 2 days now, got smoke finally yesterday but my spindle fell out haha. They make it look so damn easy.

you may be making your notch and fire hole to close to the edge of the fire board.
huntingbob05 2 years ago
where did u get the coal or how was it created? is it just piece of the wood on the floor?

looks like you were using bark for the tinder that you put the ember,in I use shredded natural fiber rope and it works better

amazing! I really wish I knew how to make a bow drill it just seems so difficult too the point where I don't know if I could.

Man you did that pretty fast. You must have done this afew times. It took me awhile to get mine going when I was in the service. Great job man!

Very sweet! Very informative. On a side note, is it possible to make fire from ice? ("The Edge" reference).
azarazar007 3 years ago
I really don't know if fire can be made from ice. I have never attempted it. If you find out let me know.

They made frie from ice lenses on mythbusters. But they confirmed that making such an ice lens out in the wild wasnt probably.

1. I see 7 notches in your Fire Board, is there a limit how many times you can use the same notch and same drill tip.
2. What are the best wood combinations to use? Hardwood for the drill, softer for the fireboard?
3. Are you using green wood for the drill and dried wood for the Fire Board.
4. Where does the actual ember come from: The Drill tip or the Fire Board?
5. How much pressure are pushing against your bearing on the top of the drill?

unusual leg position, so you can kneel on a piece of wood to hold the board in place !!!, is there an advantage?
