Why when mainline electrification is again on the agenda would class 92 be replaced by a Diesel? - Surely the freight companies should now be starting to invest in Electric traction or making more use of Electric locos already in service,
@WrongRoadRailways IF and only IF the class 70 shows a fuel saving, maintance saving and most of all atleast a 4% running cost V profit per unit (loco) per train will the class 66 really start to fall to pieces and they will be pushed aside by the class 70 like the class 60 was with the 66.
Class 60 V Class 66 was something like 3% saving and that was enough for almost every Frieght op to buy one however the 66 is a 24 year old design. (continued)
@vectorm1299 however the 66 is a 24 year old design from GM. However GE had to design from the ground up to complete with a 24 year old design. So based on that the purchase price for a 66 V 70 should be cheaper, by how much would depend on the 66 variant that was being purchased and how many were being bought in bulk. When EWS bought 250 at once + their parent company at the time was a large GM customer also, they got a massive discount.
@vectorm1299. As far as i can see the next BR commissioned Locomotive to be sidelined by a GM or GE product will be the BR Class 92.
It will probally be replaced by a variant of the GM EMD 16-710 G3C-U2 (Vossloh Euro 4000) [Vossloh build them under licence from GM at present]
while both classes are capable of pushing 400kN tractive effort the class 92 can only do so in boost mode and for short periods, the euro 4000 is continous.
They are truly magnificent monsters, I love em, I hope Wee will see them hauling massive fright trains, well out of the class 66 limit, LONG LIVE THE 70's.
Id love to driver them, I hope I do in the near future.
The Power Haul is what Freightliner had to buy from GE due to loading gauge restrictions. The locomotive Freightliner would have like to have purchased would the EVO's that are being hauled behind the Powerhaul's ;-) in the loco's US test. That is if the UK had the load gauge to fit a US road engine.

@rickerbycourt
Fully agree with you.
If electrification is again on the agenda please tell me why it ever went off the agenda?
In my mind electrification is the sensible way forward. However, in UK it is still not comprehensive even after about 50 years! It amazes me.

@kje1957 Totally agree. They should have gone to Brush. This was a missed opportunity to boost UK locomotive production.
