  • An ceoil is go maith

  • The late Johnny Cunningham was a great fiddler. He was in Silly Wizard and Relativity. I met him in person once.

  • I love this stuff because its the beinging of the return of Irish music. The people we here of now grew up listening and watching these men play. The Clancy Brothers High Chieftens Liem O'Flynn and Tom Peoples Paddy O'Rielly and Paul Brady. These guys started in pubs singing these songs. An now we have the High Kings, Celtic Woman and Celtic Thunder and many more. But you have to tip you're hat to those that came before and paved the roads that now are covered in gold.

    Slainte to you.

  • This is the Irish music that I love ! Many thanks for the post.

  • I like it when they start the harmonies at 1:08 :)

  • Liam plays so relaxed.

  • Too awesome!!! Thanks!!!

  • tommy's bow arm is so nonchalant and awesome.

  • I like the way RTE closes up on the performers' faces

  • @locomotive1804 It's a BBC clip

  • Irish BBC or something else?

  • @bilko1234 hahaha:D

  • @locomotive1804 RTÉ does do that too however :P and this song belongs to Ireland

  • Hey lets not forget Tommy Peoples, a great fiddler from St. Johnston, from the Lagan valley Co.Donegal.

  • @TheLangelander

One of the greatest fiddlers ever to come out o' Donegal....scratches an' all.

  • Á chara!!!

  • Flynn fingers flyin.

  • Just keeps getting better & better -

    Great post!

    Thank you!

  • Ireland seems to have all the best of all talents in Music and Art.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • @fx02zbn This is a brilliant tune played by great musicians. . There are many countries with wonderfully gifted people in the fields of music and arts. IT certainly doesn't have all the best since that would logically mean that the worst musicians in Ireland are better than the best in any other country. I am sure that you don't think that is the case.

  • @fx02zbn Ha'e ye no heard of Johnny Cunningham?

  • @transliminal No!

  • Nothing beats 70's Flynn.

  • presence & beauty

  • great stuff

  • Fire and ice.

  • Lovely!

  • Pure drop music. Lovely. The first tune, if it hasn't been said before, is The Flax in Bloom. Also pronounced as The Flaxen Broom. It would sound as sweet by any name.

  • Sean-nós ceol

  • God Bless Liam O'Flynn and Tommy Peoples from 1976

  • If you're singing a jig, of course you'll be gay and merry, jumping about. These two are incredibly talented musicians, with two unique and distinct instruments, trying to achieve harmony and put on a good show for the people, don't knock 'em for being concentrated on the job. This was a great clip! too short, though!

  • Where have you learned that? From Lord of the Dance?

Have you ever been to Ireland?

The folk musicians I saw and heard there were rather introverted, concentrated and calm (inspite of the music) and never showed off.

Just like the musicians in this video!

  • Probably did. That's what commercialism does. It's annoying isn't it how someone like Mr Flatley could take something that is years old and to make a quick buck turn it into a circus. I saw Flatley dance with The Chieftans back in 1985 when he was unheard of. Great dancer but he was just dancing in the old way (hands to the side) not flapping them around as in Lord Of The Prance!

  • @anita.We will have no flapping around here.

  • this has to be the best ever musicin the real tradition

  • @kalidastony Excellent ...notice how musical ...no sawdust or excessive speed.

  • thats fiddle players for ya. ha ha

  • Baloney, Liam is thinking "whats for dinner" or there may be a girl with a short skirt in the front row to the right.

  • Ha ha!

  • Not looking someone in the eye doesn't mean ignoring him, especially in chamber music like situations where you can hear yourself well... don't listen with your eyes! They're obviously both very focussed (on that girl with the short skirt).

  • Ramclam..I know this is a popular song but ive never heard this version....ever.

And the old slow version with lyrics is the only one I can find online.

  • Anyone know where I can find some fiddle sheet music to this????

  • veramente bello, complimenti.

  • Best concert I ever attended (early 80s, Harvard Square bar): Tommy Peoples, Paddy Keenan and Johnny Moynihan.

  • whats the other piece they're playing?

  • The second tune is also called The Wind that Shakes the Barley! I found this version in "100 Essential Irish Session Tunes" by Dave Mallinson (England 1995).

I had never heard the first tune before, but it is amazing how the two parts fit together.

    Wonderful music!

  • Liam's like "hmm whats for dinner." damn he's so good.

  • Aye the good old days of rehearsals at the Piper's Club

    (.....) as a duck's whatcha mo call it? (....)

  • Excuse my ignorance, but what the hell is the instrument that Mr. O'Flynn is playing?

  • The UILEANN PIPES !!

  • Uileann is Irish is elbow pronounced ulin. The bellows are pumped by the elbow. The craft of uileann piping almost died out. Thankfully there is a revival driven by Irish and some great French, Spanish and dare I say it Japanese Irish pipers. The sound of uileann pipes is almost spiritual to an Irishman's ear. (more so if he has a pint of Guinness in his hand). We need to get the Maoris on to them next.

  • Thanks for the great information..and a hApPy GuInEsS day to you...*^_^* I love the sounds!

  • WHAT THE HELL? I'm a Maori and just happen to be looking very seriously into buying a set of Uilleann Pipes or maybe even the vPipes (electronic version of the Uilleann Pipes). I can barely play the recorder and have never touched a bagpipe or uilleann chanter in my life - but I SOOO want to play them!

  • The original name was the Pastoral pipes then the Union pipes, the term Uilleann is actually quite recent and coined in the early 20th century.

  • you know what, the sound of a uileann pipes gives me a beautiful, errie and cheerful feeling all at once. Spot on Dickens

  • Outstanding ... this reel is a piece of art

  • f#ck me, what a nicely played reel. excellent.

  • Great! Thank you.

  • What a combination...Tommy and Liam are absolute legends. Music has never sounded better........

  • Classic performance. Thanks for posting.

  • the flax in bloom/the wind that shakes the barley

  • Liam o flynn rock's. After seamus innes of course ;)

  • up ya boya

  • Wonderful version, I put 5 stars too. Excellent!

  • Liam is one of the greatest, all around kickass.

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • Hear hear, those are two MASTERS up there. Brilliant stuff.

  • Come on guys! 45 ratings averaging 4 stars but favourited 136 times. This doesn't add up. Express your appreciation a little more, eh? *****

  • That's the problem with the yt rating system - all it takes is for 1 numskull to one-star a video, then it stays on 4 forevermore.

  • Or even rating a vid with 500 5 stars 4 stars will have the same effect.

  • 5 stars from me anyway :)

  • That's unfortunately true, as I've seen. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • I think the point is that it's been marked as a favorite by 136 people, but has only been rated by 45.

  • Ye thats what happened to my video I had over 90 5 stars then on number 91 rating I got 4 stars and that screwed it....what to do..

  • Perfect!!

  • Tommy is the King!

  • does anyone know any really good uillleann pipe makers in ireland who use sterling silver and make B sets

  • Excellent ! Thanks for uploading ! Phalaina

  • lovely shtuff there Bilko

  • Mres Crotty (Concertina Player from Co.Clare) used to call the last reel "The Reel With The Beryl." Great music, love it!

  • tommy peoples a livin ledgend

  • Liam og O'Flynn is just brilliant on pipes.

  • brilliant.

  • i think the first tune is called the flax in bloom? Not sure, but I think ... great stuff anyhow. who cares about names!
