  • Maybe if you had not let your Cat get to that size! Then there would not be so much breathing difficulties. And why are you filming it, rather than acting upon it? I hope the Cat ended up okay....

  • My cat is breathing like this & ER said today it's fluid compressing his lungs. They drained it but his labored breathing hasn't stopped. To do all sorts of tests to find out cause would be $4,000 which I cannot afford. His lethargy came suddenly. He had been acting normally & then in the last week became very lethargic & hasn't liked contact, being held. Breathing looked so rapid. He's 4 1/2 & I have to decide if he's suffering enough to put him down in the next few days. I feel for you. ):

  • my cat, after running a little, stops and opens his mouth trying to breath.he has no cough though. is that asthma?

  • Wow - thanks for sharing this heartbreaking video. I want to tell you - I have a cat named Tyler who is an identical twin - and I mean totally identical - and is an asthma sufferer and is currently on prednisone 5mg/ day. He has gained a ton of weight on that drug. I am thinking of putting him on FloVent- did you ever try that with this cat? Sorry about your loss, but I am in desperate need of some advice - I don't want Tyler to pass away from asthma. Prednisone causes so many symptoms :*(

  • @simons56201

Hello. So sorry to hear about Tyler. Inhaled meds are the way to go, but you'll want to keep tyler on the Prednisone for a while and then try slowly lowering his dose of pred. while on the inhaled beds. Please go to and join the following yahoo group for Feline Asthma.

This group gave me a ton of information. Ask questions on this board. Folks there know what you are going through. Best of luck and health to Tyler.

  • @simons56201

For some reason I am not able to post a link. Just put the normal header before this : pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/felineasthma_inhaledmeds/ Hopefully, you should get to the site. Good luck. You can also find it from fritzthebrave website.

  • Dude My cat is having trouble breathing and im very worried it just started 3 days ago is not as fast as yours in the vid but the abdominal area gets to big when she breathes and she is very exhausted there are not vets in the area due to vacation time and i wanted to know if is URGENT for a vet to see her or can it wait until monday ???

  • so, i called another vet, she told me that there is a treatmen with a drug called "Montelukast" (1 pill of 5 mg per day )that can work., then i gave her the drug (just 4 hours ago), and i can say that is an excelent option, she is getting better, so if u want disscus it with a vet, is a good option :). today i can rest and my cat can sleep good too :)..... regards

  • thanks for post that information. my cat now is having i think... the worst asthma attack that ive ever seen in her, and is really hard for me to see that she cant breathe, and her nose makes a sound really bad, im too scared, and my vet i dont know... he only put on her corticoids and thast all, evey month she has an asthma crisis and the same: he comes and put the fuckin crticoid.. but she is getting worst :(, is ery hard for me to see her like that.

  • was he purring as he neared the camera?

  • Aww. My cat looks just like Stinky. He died in February 2010 of Feline Leukema. :( I miss him so much!

  • My cat looked just like yours and died yesterday i feel your loss is very hard to lose a pet that is so loved and is part of your life :((

  • my cat has problems breathing now and the vets dont know how to help. He breaths like he is congested. I'm not sure what is wrong with him. Does anyone know common diseases in cats like this? Sounds like his nose is congested but he doesn't sneeze ever.

  • Hiya, thanks for posting this video. I am wondering if my cat has feline asthma or not, he is only 2 years old and sometimes starts hacking as if he wants to pass a hairball but doesn't. When he was younger he used to inhale his food so fast he'd get sick, but I wonder if it's related now. The coughing happens quite infrequently, it's usually triggered by him lying on his back on our bed, where he's purring for a long time on his back and he sounds like he's purring underwater a bit,,,,

  • @lioxoda .... then he starts little hicups which go away quickly once he sits up properly or stops purring. I thought he was just getting over excited, but I don't know. I am going to take him to the vet but don't have pet insurance, was wondering in terms of cost or getting covered prior to diagnosis. He doesn't have laboured breathing though so I'm not sure what he has. It's feels like he just gets winded and if he's hacking and I pat him on the back it goes away. Any help would be appreciated

  • My kitty had labored breathing the other day-she was outside for the first time (in a carrier because my house was being sprayed for bugs) I wonder if that's why... but she has had coughing in the past and what now I think could be feline asthma... I don't know what to do-my dad won't listen he thinks I worry too much I don't know what to do!! She's only 3 years old D:

  • My cat is called stinky! Well he's Really called pinky but we all call him stinky!

  • oh, I'm very sad about what happened to your cat... really.

I wanted to know the kind of breathing that can be dangerous... because my cat has also Asthma. Thank you for the video, it's important to know, for example, about normal respiration.

  • I think this is an age related disease; minimized if the cat is a normal weight, and

groomed regularly to reduce likelihood of hairballs.

  • i never seen a cat have ashama

  • I adopted my cat earlier this year & discovered he does have asthma, but a very mild case. So meds are not warranted at this time. Just monitoring. One of the things the vet said really hits cats with asthma is the hairball situation. It blocks their breathing & irritates their diaphram more than for cats without asthma. Once I put him on food w/ hairball treatment & it got into his system, his asthma attacks & symptoms have dropped tremendously. Although he still snores like an old man.

  • My youngest cat Jack, whose not even a year old, had an asthma attack two days ago. My husband and I were terrified. I knew from my previous medical training what was going on and tried to help him out as best as possible, but nevertheless I felt so helpless. I'm afraid that the vet will only put him on meds and make me pay a fortune. I usually use natural methods so I'm a bit uneasy on giving my baby any type of meds. Can anyone help?

  • SHIT my cat does the same!!! i also watched some other videoes of cats with asthma/caughing and its very similar to wha my cat does. thnx alot for posting these videoes. now i know that it is something serious and that he shud get to the vet very fast!

  • my cat's about 5 and I'm wondering if she has feline asthma. I've only had her for 2 months and I don't think she's had an attack yet. She does breathe a little funny though. About normal rate, 30 or so/min but the out is always exaggerated a little.

Your video helped me a lot to see an asthmatic cat that's not having a coughing fit. I might get pet insurance for my girl since I found a cheapy policy that covers asthma.

Your kitty was a very pretty girl:) I'm sorry she's gone.

  • wow thats got to be the most sadest thing ever to lose your cat i feel sorry for you i really do. im so sorry for your cat )':

  • Thank you. I think my kitty has asthma too. I'm sorry for your loss.

  • Thank you for this. I am standing watch over a foster cat tonight awaiting a diagnosis. I feel more confident that I could identify labored breathing to determine if an ER trip in needed.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my 9-year old calico in July 2007 from asthma also. Stinky's labored breathing looks just like my baby's. Thanks for posting the video because so many people think it's a furball. I had to take video into my vet's office. I've always wondered if she could have lived with an albuterol inhaler if diagnosed sooner.

  • Thank you for the post, I wanted to see if my cats breathing was considered rapid. My condolences for your loss. It must have been hard to post this, but just letting you know it is a help to others whose cats have the same potential problem. Thank you!

  • You are very welcome. Best of health to your cat!

  • thanks for the vid. i have two cats myself but i havent noticed anything developed as they are still less than a year old.

  • I am sorry you lost Stinky. We had a Siamese who had asthma his entire life and lived to be 13 years old. He seemed to get better when he started going outside. I always wondered if it were carpet related since my asthma acts up when I am near carpet, especially new carpet.

  • my cats name is stinky

  • oh, she was a beauty. so sorry shes gone. :( i have 2 asthmatic cats, though one is only bothered by wheezing, and the other does have attacks, but only if he over exerts. we're lucky i guess. :\

  • I am sorry you lost your sweet cat. I have had my male maine coon, Silverado, checked for everything and have no solutions. He has labored breathing, a lot of weight loss, seems worse on the exhale and just now I heard wheezing on the exhale, looked it up and found feline asthma. He never coughs though, no gagging or anything like that. Did Stinky cough too? Did she ever lose weight?

    Thank you for this post.

  • My cat breathes rapidly like this whenever I'm petting her, sometimes while purring. I wonder if it's just how she purrs, or if when she gets excited she has asthma problems. She's only about 10 months old.

  • Cotton509- I am removing your comment because you clearly did not read the information I provided with this footage. The vulgar language in your comment indicates you have no real desire to learn from this footage.

  • That is what my wife's cat is breathing like today. We are taking him to the vet today.

  • That is wierd...I have a 10-year old gray female cat, looks almost exactly the same and I have to give her 5 mg of Prednisone every other day since she started having asthma attacks 5 years ago. She looks worse when it happens though!

  • Astma is not always serious though but sometimes it can be.

  • no, my cats male and he has astma.

  • My cats most common symptom is cough and labored breathing. I have not observed her breathing rapidly like in this video. She crouches down low and sticks her neck out and coughs/gags. Sounds almost like she is trying to get a fur ball out. She is currently on albuterol and Flovent 110 mcg's and this seems to work very well. We use the aerocat chamber for administering. She doesn't mind the inhaler, she seems to know it helps.

  • I am sorry for your loss. She is a lovely girl.

Thank you for posting this on the net to help others who may also have issues with their felines as this may really help!

When in doubt - get your pet to the vet!

    Take care

  • she is so lovely, my cat (female) elisa suffered the same (she is gone 1998 with 17

years)but today the veterinary can help much!

i hope your dear cat is ok!

  • Wow.. not only does your cat look like mine, but I have the same problem. My baby's mouth turned purple during her worst attack. She's on Flovent enhaler and takes theophyline. I also have albutoral and prednisilone for emergencies.

  • thanks 4 this.

  • Oh my goodness! your poor baby, I hope your cat alright now. I got scared and worried just watching it. Thanks for posting it, it does help to have education videos like this on youtube

  • Poor cat. My cat has just been diagnosed with asthma. I did not realise it was so common. These videos really help. Initially I thought the vet was a bit mad to be honest. Now I truely believe it after watching all these cat asthma videos.

  • This IS exactly what my Spookie does and that lookes like he needs a puff of Albuterol to help him get his respirations down. Thats what I have to do for Spookie and it seems to help. because that is Labered Breathing

  • The purpose of this video is to give an example of what labored or abdominal breathing looks like. This video was made in order to show our vet what we were seeing. Needless to say, Stinky was brought in to the emergency room after capturing this footage. Note: Normal respiration should be between 20-30.
