yes cannes loved her but somehow they awarded anna mangani in the rose tatoo the oscar well derserved and as hayward said magnani is a champ. still i think id have given the nod to hayward
Having just watched the original movie version of this song (in which the real Lillian has just a short part), I have to laugh at the differences. The original was from 1930, and this 1955 performance is 100% 1950s in its music, costuming, staging, and dancing, with absolutely no similarity to what appeared in 1930. This one even has the ultimate '50s dance move, men sliding onstage on their knees with their arms stretched skyward (at 3:10).
@hebneh ~ And if the original number had been accurately replicated in 1955, audiences would have laughed it right off the screen. Personally, I prefer Hayward's singing, and I like the boys' dance moves. It was a common custom in 50s movies to present the 20s and 30s in 50s styles (see also "Love Me or Leave Me").
THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SCENE FROM MADAM SATAN THAT CECIL B DEMILLE DIRECTED IN 1930, BUT IF YOU TYPE THE NAME LILLIAN ROTH AND WATCH THE ORIGINAL SCENE, YOU WILL SEE A STARK CONTRAST BETWEEN THIS SCENE AND THE ORIGINAL. THEY MAY HAVE CHANGED IT DUE TO THE RACIST OVERTONES MADE IN THE ORIGINAL AS THE SCENE TAKES PLACE AT A CHURCH PROCESSION IN WHICH THE PARTICIPANTS WERE BLACK. THE WAY THE ACTORS ARE DRESSED IN THAT SCENE YOU WOULD HAVE SWORN THAT BLACKS HAD NEVER LEFT THE PLANTATION.
There is a new Book on Susan Hayward By Gene Arceri called"Brooklyn Scarlett" Susan Hayward Fire in the wind" I know the Gene Arceri the Author. Gene Arceri's beginning of the extensive research that went into this book. A journey that took him from Brooklyn to Atlanta, with stops everywhere, and in-between wanting face to face interviews, anywhere he could find some insight into this compelling personality. With help from Hayward's brother Walter.
A great performance by a great actress. They don't make movies like this anymore. This was Susan's favorite movie and also my own. She left us much too soon in 1975, she was 56 yrs. young. Love you Susan.
If you like this GET the soundtrack It has all the gorgeous background score, notes & the actual recordings of the awesome voice double they chose to stand by as Susan recorded & follow her to the mike to lay down matching breath for breath tracks. You can synch them watching the movie. That close. "Just in case musical director Johnny Green was wrong thinking they could bring out Susan's natural musicality. They stopped the double after 2 songs it was clear Susan could do it. Lillian not happy
Ms Hayward was a box office superstar who was a great actress, and had movie star glamour and was sexy beyond belief. Ms. Hayward felt this was her best performance and her Director Danny Mann her favorite. Susan Hayward did the signing herself and was winner of the Cannes Film Festival for Best Actress, nominated for Best Actress for the 4th time, she would win a few years later for her classic performance in I Want To Live
A truly great star, winner of every major acting award.
You''re all great for recognizing this wonderful actress. She was a product of the era where one was expected to be able to do any form or entertaining and she did it all. One of my favorite moments in her many great movie scenes was the sultry and sexy sword dance scene in "The Conqueror" in 1955's epic with John Wayne.
Susan Hayward needs to be appreciated more, it's a pity she died relatively young... I cant wait to se her in "I'll Cry Tomorrow" because I feel her performance in "I Want to Live!" is so fantastic!
I agree that she should have won at least two Oscars....but at least she got one! And honestly, I've heard Lillian Roth sing, and I think Susan Hayward is better. :) Thanks for posting.... :)
Can you imagine? That was really her singing in this production. She was versatile; Lillian Roth was disappointed that her own voice wasn't used for her own biopic.
any thoughts of Lililan Roth? What ever happened to her?

What a great song! What a great singer! Why don't we have such little number of great movies and music today? Why is our culture so low?
PinkoNikolina 3 years ago 3
Yes, it is. Today's performers don't even come close to the old standards.

Because we have "actresses" like Megan Fox and those other want-to-be models/movie stars instead of real actresses. LOL

She did a great job with her own singing
here. Some years later, when she did
VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, I don't see why she didn't sing her one song herself (I'll Plant My Own Tree) - thanks for posting this.

Susan Hayward should have won the Oscar for this film!
She was remarkable for her portrayal of Lillian Roth. The clip is excellent. Thank you! Ginger Haydon/Ginger Haydon's Susan Hayward Homepage
