With "Sound of White Noise," Anthrax pulled a 180 with their style and it worked. Don't get me wrong, I love "Among the Living" as much as any metal purist, but John Bush was the right person at the right time in that era of music. "Only" has a little bit of a Helmet vibe to it, which is interesting, since Frank Bello played bass with them years later.

I was a fan from the Joey years, but even I have to admit that Sound of White Noise (and this song) are both monsters in the metal world. Anthrax gave everyone a needed dose of reality back in 1993 when the world was worshipping 3-chord alternative nonsense.

"Only" was also the last true metal song in MV's regaular rotation before that channel COMPLETELY proved its irrelevance. This tune is vital for its historical significance, car none.

When I first saw this video in 1993, I wanted to take a sledgehammer to my TV. Hearing seventeen years later, my opinion only improved marginally. Joe Bush was a terrible fit for Anthrax, and Anthrax's deviation from the sound that made them legends was even worse. Scotty Ian's vocals were a much better fit for Anthrax than Bush's ever were!
