@triplexsilenthunter No, the Papal States are never destroyed, even if you own all of their land. A new Pope is elected from the living Cardinals and shows up outside Rome. He is a single military unit (general's bodyguard). If you assassinate him every turn (like I did) the world soon runs out of Cardinals. A new Cardinal is then replenished every turn and then promoted to Pope in the same turn. It's hilarious.

Standard Issue with a bad pope, you attack a guy after they decided to decieve u (declare alliance and then attack when ur at ur weakest) and in addition u get the excom mission when they are sieging u.. so when ur defending urself.. u fail the mission and get excommed.. so fun..

@YiannisThiakos The Papacy cannot be destroyed. As long as there are Catholic factions, they will elect a new Pope. Just keep at it until they run out of cardinals. Then there won't be a Pope anymore. The Papal States won't die until all Catholic factions have been destroyed, I believe.

No, it's actually impossible to destroy the Papal States. I played an experimental campaign based just on achieving that goal. You can take every settlement they have, and kill the pope, but no matter what, a new pope with spawn with a small army.

@MrPulamea I don't think you can... I know what you're talking about. Fortunately he spawns either alone or with a small army, so you can crush him again and again. Also, I think that if you take all the Papal lands and then kill the pope, he favors you a lot more, so once he stops favoring you, kill him again :D

I have done that before, there were no priests and cardinals on the map and I was excomunicated. However I then recruited a priest and even though I was excomunicated, the priest suddenly became pope and I was reconciled!

As if managing riots in settlements and facing armies after armies of christian factions isnt enough, right after i lost because i only had 43 territories as Spain, the Mongols declare war on me in East Europe and the timurids attack me in North africa. When you capture Rome and the pope has to camp outside the city with his army (or if you also destroyed that, only his bodyguard), then if you want to assassinate him and send an assassin, the animation will be of the sleeping guy and the snake, not of the pope assassination anymore.

I play the HRE and got all cardinal seats in the college. However, wiping out other catholic factions made the pope angry, though i built huge cathedrals and churches all over the empire. It would have been wise for the hre pope not to intervene with his home country.. as I had to assasinate 3 or 4 popes already. The next one is also from the HRE which makes it easy to have control ;)

One of my assassins has killed at least 10 popes. More amusing, he's from the Holy Roman Empire.

He has single handidly almost wiped out the college of cardinals. The current Pope is Roman, so I am debating on if I should go ahead and kill him too and keep going untill the church is no more (then taking Roman for the Romans).
