The only real reason for this door system would be an extremely cramped area preventing a typical hinged door, or at a push in the home of a wheelchair user, where normal hinged doors can be awkward to use (though bidirectional hinges exist like the doors stereotypically used in restaurant kitchens). Otherwise there's not really an excuse for a door to consume power when a slab of wood and some small metal parts do the same job perfectly well with zero electricity consumption after manufacture.
