  • does this fear that he has about being on stage means that he does not write his comedy and that all of it is an improvisation?

  • If you don't think of Pamela as a shrink but just as an interviewer then she is doing a great job. What may seem a stupid question to some brings out in Billy an interesting response. Good for her.

  • I love how people are so annoyed with Pamela just because she is a shrink. I don't think it is that she doesn't understand him, but that she can't articulate what she DOES understand. When she says that he intellectualized the problem, and understands what happened as an adult, I think she is saying that he is wise enough, and old enough, to be in his mother's shoes.

He DID have a bad childhood, and it had to have come from somewhere. She assumed being abandoned contributed to SOMETHING.

  • A live performance that can bring tears to your eyes 40 years after you hear it. That's just amazing.

  • Pamela was not and did not and does not ever put words in Billy's mouth. She was trying to wrap her own head around a situation she was not privy to. By her understanding she brings herself closer to Billy and from all I've seen and heard since this was originally filmed they are far closer as a couple. We should not place our own concepts on this man because he is honestly so far removed from most people. He stands with no emotional crutch and works with the gifts he has. His wife included.

  • I know this'll be about the kerbillionth comment on this issue but: The one thing I've always hated about shrinks is that they wrap people up in little conforming packages, saying that everyone is precisely 20% anger, 15% sadness, 50% sexual tension, or whatever, and they therefore think that if you're not displaying this exact formula, then you're just repressing it. Hasn't anyone ever considered the possibility that people react differently to similar situations??

  • Wow, I've always like Billy's comedy, but now I like the man.

  • I've never felt the need to go to a "shrink", but jesus this woman/his wife must be a bad one, right? How the hell can it be productive to talk to someone who is basically telling you how to feel.

  • Where's Billy?

    Where he wants to be!

    Get on with your life!!

  • for some reason I think that Billy knows more about his own life than the shrink does

  • I am so proud to be Scottish when Billy is a fellow countryman! I love this brilliant man, and this is great that his wife got to have him open up in a way we the public do not normally see. I find him fascinating! What a treasure he is!

  • "The world doesn't seem to suit me" because you're an original, billy connolly and thank you for that!!!

  • at 2:00 billy is explaining how he has no hard feelings towards his mother yet pam is trying conjure up hard feeling in him, it just shows that shrinks know sweet fa

  • @paddythetinker Anger is sometimes a healthy state of being when dealing with emotional traumas. It's a stepping stone on the way to a resolution, I feel.

  • @paddythetinker " Shrinks ", if the are any good, know people often have mixed feelings, or some feelings that they don't want to look at. A good psychologist can be a god send, a bad one... bleh, worse than nothing at all. But don't dismiss them.

  • @paddythetinker

I think Pamela is not hearing what she expects to-that is, what she has learned are the effects of particular behaviour by adults towards a child, so she is prompting him, trying to get him to say what she wants to hear. She is also not listening to him. One of the best things anyone can do for a troubled person is listen. He is far smarter than she is and understands himself far better than she does.

  • @paddythetinker I totally agree with you, she's not a lot of help. Maybe (and I'm saying "maybe") she's not being the shrink but being a wife who happens to be a shrink. I don't know. But 100%, as a shrink, she's not giving him too much relief or is the conversation heading in a positive way. There would be no way she could take a neutral stance considering she's married to him.

  • @paddythetinker heheh.

    She's also his spouse. Double-whammy!

  • He is an realy open minded guy and a real smart man. Hes a fucking hero

  • He is an absolute gem. I love him :)xx

  • He Makes Me Feel Really Proud To Be Scottish. I Dont Think I'v Ever Thought About Heroes (mine) But i guess he could be - no, he is my hero.

  • It's just amazing...I can relate to the upbringing he had to sustain...all the abuse and the heartache he had to contend with..end's up making you a stronger person with so much more tolerance to allow you to deal with todays world.

    Billy....yer ma hero.

  • he flows on stage, you can see that onstage, some comedians have notes or some shit to help remind themselves, but billy justs go's with it.

  • nope left handed (more creative people) use the right hand side of their brain :-)

  • Left handedness may correspond to an unusual dominance of the right side of the brain, but you use both sides, and they work in synchrony. More had been made of the distinction between the right and left sides of the brain than is factual.

  • I just noticed Billy looks like MFHusain

  • he's a fucking hero to everyone.

  • that emotion at 623 reallly makes me smile. i havent had a moment like that in a good long time, and i think now ill look forward to the next one

  • I think she got the the sides of the brain thingy wrong. Isn't the left side of the brain the creative side and right side is the organisational side?

  • Nope. The right side of the brain corresponds to the left side of the body tho, and vice versa.

  • He's so much more intelligent than her it's painfully obvious.

  • Its amazing to see how emotional he gets when he starts talking about how he watched a guy perform a Bob Dylan song and how it changed him, I find it inspiring.

  • It is interesting and very generous that they have shared such honest and open discusion. I have met billy, he is funny on the go just by nature but when it comes time to confront demons he is lucky enough to have a psych on tap and such a loveing wife. He is lucky, as is she, and I thank them for the honesty of these vids. good on you both. I wish you the very best that you are obviously deserving of. xxxxxxx

  • what i cant understand is that she supposed to help him overcome his anger etc, but he seems to have done that and she seems to want him to be angry about the situation

  • i agree x

  • well i dont think it was that she wanted him to get angry, she might have thought there was anger there (hidden) that in her opinion needed to be released

  • @paddythetinker - wifey may be asking questions for a million people who want his answer on the point - so she is not attempting to "get him angry" she knows the "brain" as a doctor, and she is seeking Billy's deeper method of focus- This is the reason of the RAP, other wise this would be BEIGE you know , thanks for posting

  • I think she's the one who's angry about what his mother has done to him. I think it's really frustrating when someone you love who has been hurt keeps saying 'well, it just happened', when everything that you want to do is get a sledgehammer and introduce it to the people that have damaged him.

  • that woman seems to annoy billy, not in an obvious way, but you can tell.

It is annoying though, when a shrink tries to tell you how you're feeling, and 'diagnoses' you.

  • yes it is annoying

  • Funny part is "that woman" is his wife, heh

  • lol

  • hahahahahah i was going 2 say that !!

  • Thank You for pointing that out, psfanatic.

Some of the comments on this page are pretty scathing of Mrs. Pamela Connolley.

    [chuckles]

  • True enough, psfanatic, i'm sick of people trying to villify 'this women' without realising that maybe she knows what she's taling about.

  • @amagad1989 Isn't that his wife? It's expected.

  • @amagad1989 That woman is his wife haha, ofcourse she annoys him!

  • @amagad1989

    Yeah, no. That's his wife.

  • @amagad1989

"That woman" is his wife. =P

  • @amagad1989 im pretty sure if she annoyed him, he wouldnt have married her and quit drinking for her.. just a guess

  • @amagad1989

    thats his wife.

  • @amagad1989 I think if anyone is qualified, it's her. Apart from himself, she knows him best of all. How long have they been married now?

  • his book the big yin it goes through wot happend in his childhood.

and really his father and his aunts where fuckin horrible people.

  • Pamela is trying to put words in Billy Connolly's mouth .

  • typical shrink, they think they have magic abilities to understand ones mind because they studied other peoples findings and took it for granted that it was gospel

  • @paddythetinker She's also his wife of many years so she knows him and his history very well.

  • This is a little bit of a different situation with Pam been Billy's wife. Can't be to picky.

  • I think he is a a bit too cool for her isn't he? She saved him from the booze though and he loves her so i guess i have to as well

    Greatest comedian ever

  • Billy n Bob...oooooooooh what a partnership.

  • My father had a similar upbringing in Glasgow, it was a hard place to be brought up in.

He used to get hit by his father also from a Catholic background, religion can sometimes trap people in poverty make them feel guilty all the time.

  • I don't think i've ever disagreed with anything Billy's said. If i caught him bed with my girlfriend i'd still shake his hand.

    I love the man.

  • I'd just say " Tea or coffee, mate? " JoshTurner11

  • @JoshTurner11

hell he might even give you a turn when he needs a break.

  • I think what is sad in listening to this , is that every child that is separated from either of their parents , must suffer these emotions of loneliness , sadness and longing to belong .

Yet what is apparent to us as listeners now , is that the Children , as adults now , are not even aware , sometimes , of just how their lives have been so affected !

  • aww, billy got upset, Love billy xx

  • this are conversations billy and pam have had for a long time, so pam doesn't really have to do the shrink thing on billy because she's done that already, billy knows what she's after, but its tv, pam has to say something, ofcourse its not the same as it would be in other situations

  • Billy doesnt hold back. hes genuine about stuff regardless.

  • In thais case of course she is just too close too the source material to objective

  • I think Billy just has a better understanding of his own mind - he doesn't need any encouragement or explanation for his on thoughts which is what Pam attempts to do.

  • I agree with paddy, he says something and she repeats it and acts like she is saying something profound.

  • What a love! all the best to you Billy...you absolutely fasinate us, your precious soul is just so very evident ,it's like a beacon. Precious is what you are!

  • to be honest i think Billy has a better understanding of the human mind than pamela. Pamelas great but Shrinks are annoying because they think they have some superior ability to look into the mind, but they dont!
