It's good to have a hole dug near your house, perhaps just in your backyard or frontyard, or wherever, where you can hop down into it in the case of an emergency such as this. Just make it deep enough so that you can stand in it, or sit, and then put a sheet of plywood or sheetmetal or something above you (to cover the hole) and that should do it.
