I've to cut my words to^^. Gosh, K: let's see: Under US President William McKinley teh USA decided that keeping the Philippines as a direct part of the US isn't that good. So, they decided to create a country called Philippines. For this they started quite a lot of projects which would eventually lead to a lot of problems. The most prominent one would be the Philippine National Language Institute. Out of a pool of languages the Americans chose a language to be used by all in the archipelago.

Two major languages of the Phils. didn't even enter the debate back then. One was, what we nowadays would call indonesian, spoken on Mindanao, the other one was Hokkien (a Chinese language used also in Singapore, Taiwan, S. China Malaysia). Leaving only 2 possible options: Cebuano and Tagalog. The Americans chose Tagalog. They also created a tagalog orthography. But most Filipinos rant about it being unprecise. E.g."Baba" can be, pronounced int 3 ways bàbà(down), bāba(chin) and babâ(chest)

A capital for the country was also to found. Initially they chose Quezon City, which was founded by Manuel Quezon, who was president of the Philippines during those days. Ironically, some pics of Quezon show him with the American flag in his back. Later on, the Americans moved the capital to Manila. Both cities are in central Luzon. This region was also the area where all companies and the US military headquarters were to be found.

At the same time they tried to create a national legacy. And chose, out of a pool of possible revolutionary groups and single persons, people the Filipinos would call national heroes. Most mentionable at this point would be Rizal and the Katipunan. Again, these 2 come from central Luzon and the Katipunan weren't fighting for a free Philippines but for a free Luzon. They were never active outside of Luzon. By now we can see the Americans emphasize on one single philippine group

Now, of course, this political campaign of the Americans led to several problems with effects that are still noticable today. E.g. the people in the south don't want to be part of the Philippines, but since they got the 2nd largest gold resources & oil, the USA send weapons on a regular basis and order the phil. gov. to fight those guys. The Visayans, quite often, don't refer to themselves as Filipinos either but as Visaya or Bisoy. Leaving only the Luzonians calling themselves pinoy.

Finally the USA changed the laws and twisted history quite a bit. As you might know, Emilio Aguinaldo, was the first president of our country. But he was not the president of all of the Philippines but only of central Luzon. The Americans changed that a bit. They also stated that everything that's bad in the Phils. was put unto them by the spanish. Similar to what Hitler did to the jews. Simply putting the blame on sb.

Also, they changed the laws. The constitution passed by the Katipunan in 1898 were annulled by the US colonial gov. in the same yr. LAter on, coz the phil. -am. war was taking up too time and cost too much, the Americans decided to create laws and some sort of constitution in 1913. Then they reformed it in 1946 and changed it again in 1987.

All of these were in favor of the USA. E.g. American citizens cannot be charged in the Phils. for any crime.

Even if they have a higher degree than that. So, the Philippines are experiencing a real brain drain right now.

This also is one of the reasons why not enough food is being produced. So the Philippines have to import food.
