LOL I'm learning Japanese right now, and this is seriously the weird... I can understand most of it!!! Although there isn't much to understand, seeing as she says the same thing over and over again. xD Ah, but this is still weird... and kind of amusing, although her Japanese really is terrible... >.> but I can't say it's worse than mine.
I'm pretty sure she isn't meaning to say "tennis boyfriend. it is very good", but "(My) tennis boyfriend is very good", though she can't be implying "good at tennis". She's just saying good. Kind of ambiguous... a lot like Japanese, at times. >_>
@OkashiiBoy Obviously she doesn't use the topic marker は (wa). I hope it goes unsaid that this is often dropped. I'm just making sure to cover my bases.
There isn't anything wrong with her Japanese pronunciation. It's spot on. If you listen to any Japanese music, you'd know that singers overly pronounce syllables just as she does. It's different than speaking it hey. フリーズポップはとてもいいですよ。
@yuefo Still, when she says things like "soshite" with that "shi" in there, it sounds awful, that and the weird stress patterns and wrong pitch accent all over all the spoken parts
yes. it is about a tennis boyfriend. the main chorus is. You are usually awfully lively aren't you Tennis boyfriend It is very good anata wa taitei zuibun ogenki desu ne tenisu no boifurendo totemo ii desu yo if i could get the hiragana up here i would but i can't :(
lol, she doesnt speak japanese well, her english accent on the japanese lyrics makes it that much more awesome xD This is just what I know, and what each line says (im not that good at japanese) but the lines and words can be played around with a bit to make it more understandable ^^
Anata wa taitei You Usually
zuibun ogenki desu nee Are extremely healthy right?
hehe its cute! She's saying things like today its raining, I'll be at home, and you're very cute. Very fun! I wonder if she actually speaks it or if its just for fun...
@iceypickett i always assumed just for fun, because they do a darn good french song too. some, but not very many anymore, americans are not usually tri lingual.
I think the point of this song is to show that language can be a tool used not only for communicating clearly, but also to evoke a certain mood. I think she used Japanese to give the song a nostalgic Japanese Karaoke vibe. You don't have to understand lyrics to enjoy a song. I know a lot of artists who sing English to be accessible, yet aren't very good at it. Liz was probably going for a 1st year Jap sound, like she shoots for unenthusiastic vocals in her other songs. It's style, not a mistake.
does it really matter if the pernunciation is bad most americans dont speak japanese anyway and couldnt pernounce the words any better. . .i think the lyrics are really funny. . .cuz i do speak japanese. . .and it makes perfect sense
Ha! I like the way they turn it into a karaoke song - I notice that alot of Japanese karaoke videos have little to do with the actual song content..just usually a bunch of recycled footage
thx, those subtitles helped so much. But seriously thx for posting a freezepop video. There honestly aren't enough, even if you chose the japenise one.
Freezepop forever!! That said, I didn't know they had done something in Japanese and don't know wtf she is talking about but the tennis court idea is cute and flirty which is adorable. I also love the 'air guitar' tennis rackets and whatever the thing is covered with buttons one of the guys is using as an instrument. I bet Japanese fans probably love the attempt at basic (butchered, I bet) Japanese as much as I like listening to martial arts movies badly translated from Japanese to English!!
i belive the button covered thing is called an MIDI i may be wrong though... i think it is a type of mixing device and it can sample different beats... dont hold me to this though im not an expert on this kinda thing... XD
i heard that Liz was in a japanese class for a while, and she wanted to try a song in the language. so...this is how the song came to be. she isn't an expert at japanese, but i think it's kewl how she made it.
ok so maybe it isnt perfect pronounciation. but the song still rokks
Well from somebody who speaks Japanese I can say the pronounciation is AWFUL hahaha.
But back to the point, I guess it's because Freezepop are usually found on music games made by Japanese companies, might be some form of homage, and even if not, it's not too bad making songs in other languages, it's interesting to say the least. The lyrics are gibberish too, here's an example.
"But today rain is falling, Because of this I'm inside, You are very cute, I want to go to your house"
Given the fact that just before that she said that she is bad a tennis and she practices everyday and the song is clearly about how she loves the person she plays tennis with, the statement "but today it is raining, therefore I am at home. You are very cute, I want to to your house." makes sense but it is very basic Japanese.
@DirEnGay I don't think the pronunciation is bad... It's just the tone more like. And if you're familiar with Freezepop, that really shouldn't surprise you...
@DirEnGay I think her pronunciation is not as bad as her lyrics. At least I could catch what she was saying but her lyrics are just weird. The lyrics seems extracted from some "japanese for dummies" book.
What was she trying to say? I guess lyrics meaning is not important when you sing in japanese.
The examples you give aren't really "botched" English. The spellings/pronunciations of most English words have to be changed if they are to be written with the Japanese writing system.
I realise that but they've created a way of speaking and writing English that most of the world will struggle to understand and more than likely ridicule them for just like all the ignorant people who laugh at Eastern Asian accents.
I'm well aware that the Japanese writing systems never have a consonant without a vowel afterwards except for the one exception "N".
I don't mind, I just find it odd having to re-learn my own language, and it is happening again now with Asia creating "Panglish".
They Should make English Version So we know what They're saying...But it Is really cool How they made it in Japanese...Wait Do the Japanese People get English version of this?
This is funny because even though I'm not Japanese, I've been studying for a little while so i can tell that They probably learned most of the words from a teach yourself book. But hey...Freezepop is hot
By the way, if you are still arguing about the title of the song, it is "Tennis Boyfriend" The
"no" particle is just used as a possessive to show ownership of something. In this case Boyfriend is possessive of Tennis. The "No" particle while it doesn't translate directly into English, it does have a meaning. Most particles in the language are similar.
A little education and time can smooth things over.
i love how people get all in an up roar cuz a white person learns japanese they don't even give them a chance they don't like that person from the get go its Weeeaboo this and that any one who uses that word on anyone might as well be calling a black guy a NIgg you know what i mean
And the valiant White Knight to the rescue. Seriously. Go defend some senior citizens or something at your local city hall or Kmart. You're not a hero here.
Neither of us are right, actually. You used a direct translation and I just got it wrong, logically it's "Tennis Boyfriend" as in a boyfriend that likes tennis.
Also, this wasn't the comment for you, my comment for you was a lot harsher.
You have to know how the language works. There really are no English equivalents for the particles. "Boyfriend of tennis" is pretty much the exact same as "Tennis boyfriend"...you just have to be smart enough to interpret it.
Isn't this band at least somewhat famous? Why do all of their videos look extremely low budget? Like they decided one day to get out the tripod and their dads video camera and go wild?
I have to admit, it's a very cute and bubbily song, and it's great to see a 'popular' band sing in different languages. I don't think she's had any formal training in Japanese, which makes this even more amazing, but I think you can kind of tell that she hasn't had any training, or she hasn't practiced in a while with some of the pronunciation for a few of the words.
Wow, that was very VERY intelligent and thought out... Well, I guess if you were educated about Japanese at ALL you'd be able to tell she isn't pronouncing things smoothly like she's supposed to...but I won't get into how incredibly asinine you're being...
I do know what you mean, but I've also heard the horrible butchering of German by the Japanese voice actress who played Asuka in Evangelion. I think this all balances out somehow ^_^.
At least language barriers are being crossed. The alternative is everyone speaking/singing Esperanto...
Yeah, and what I said applies for people all of all languages and cultures. Like Gackt butchers English... and I don't sing in Swedish or Korean in public because I slaughter the language... but at least I try to sound like I'm speaking their language. She spoke it like...an American... it just sounds awful... she doesn't even try using an accent or anything.
Oh, and thank you for being so intelligent in conversation and not just telling me to go suck a dick. ^-^ *points below*
Faggot, just because you use asanine and proper English doesn't make you any less of a weeaboo. She's pronouncing words slightly incorrectly because she doesn't spend her time learning Japanese after watching a "ZOMG KAWAII ANIMA" like you. Admit it, if it was any language besides Japanese (which your major in was probably based on your love for anime) and you knew it fluently but it was your second language you wouldn't care.
I've tried sending this comment about 5 times, and it never sends.
But anyway...I never knew being well educated (and mostly self-taught thanks to the shitty American public schools) meant I was a "faggot". This only proves further that you have no idea what you're talking about. Also, while I love anime, that isn't the reason I'm learning Japanese. Furthermore, I'm also learning more languages. So, you can shut your mouth. 分かりますか.
Your entire profile full of Shonen Ai says otherwise. Also, so there's nothing wrong with the other songs that Freezepop did in other languages? The ones that aren't Japanese? Face it, you're a weeaboo.
"While I love anime, that isn't the reason I'm learning Japanese." See, admitting I love anime. However, that is not the reason for wanting to move to Japan. It is because I hate being in my country, mostly.
And, if I KNEW they said something wrong or stepped all over another language, I'd defend that language, too. I don't know all the languages in the world, you know.
Also, what in Kira's name is a "weeaboo"? Don't fill your head with such fucking useless info.
Says the person who uses "Kira" instead of "God". What inspired you to learn Japanese, then? If you don't like your country you could have easily went to somewhere better that speaks English, like England or Australia. There is some silent (or not so much) appeal about anime to you, which is why you want to go to Japan. Japan isn't exactly a perfect country, you know.
The thing is that Japan is so much better. It may not be perfect, but just because nothing is perfect. Thing is, apparently, you don't know that there is MORE in Japan than anime. That's so idiotic and also infuriating. The people in Japan are so much smarter, kinder, and polite than those in America. Believe me, I know what it's like there. I have Japanese friends (businessmen) that came over here for a trip and told me about it.
mmkay, obviously, you have everything backwards and are too narrow-minded and completely stupid to accept the truth.
So, with that, I say that you're not even WORTH my time. Go around with your head in the clouds. I don't give a fuck. You won't get another reply from me, just because you're so tiresome. Society hates people like you.
I don't mean to butt in, so I'll be polite and refrain from swearing. =]
'DuelistGirl97' has all the right she wants to learn Japnese, whether it is the fact about Anime is AWESOME or Japan is a great, culturistic(?) country. No country is perfect, England sucks because of all the knife crime and vandalism. I know, because where I live it isn't exactly the nicest place to live in and I've seen fights, graffiti... Allsorts. And I'm sure America has an equal amount of this. (I can't anymore)
It's one thing to like a country, it's another thing to be an obsessed elitist about it. Look at their French song, do you see people complaining about their French? Nope, just Japanese. People are obsessed over this little country, and they think they're gods or something.
Freezepop is one of my all time favorite bands, I was talking about Japan. People think they're some kind of holy sanctuary of completely innocent people who bend to wills and enjoy rabid tourists. I can't help but think that the media helps hype it up a lot.
Well, Japan are apparantly quite nice. I know that on some documentury's it show's the explicit video's it makes and alot of crime ect. But most of the people are kind, as I have a few Japanese friends. =]
I'm not really sure about their relations with tourists. All of the textbooks I read say that they don't really enjoy tourism, and other say that they're nice to tourists. Eh.
Explicit videos aren't even where it starts. Used panty vending machines?
So yours is secondhand knowledge? Might want to refrain from proclaiming yourself an expert. Those of us that have actually lived there might suddenly want to poke you with a fork.
Im so happy I found out what Freezepop was I first heard them on guitar hero 2 and now there my favorite band in the whole world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whats amazing is this is the official video lol. Looks like it was filmed on a 1992 web cam.

I feel like this video should be in the catalogues at Do Re Mi in Allston (is that Science Genius Girl playing during the score?)

You are usually
awfully lively aren't you
Tennis boyfriend
It is very good!
that's about what it is. it can be kinda interpreted differently
hasitstartedyet3 1 year ago
This is funny because even though I'm not Japanese, I've been studying for a little while so i can tell that They probably learned most of the words from a teach yourself book. But hey...Freezepop is hot

This is a funny and cute video, I like the song too.
SuperReubo 3 years ago

"Boyfriend Tennis"
wat
OmgSuiseiseki 3 years ago
actually, it's translated as "Boyfriend OF Tennis"...
makes more sense, ne?
DuelistGirl97 3 years ago
Neither of us are right, actually. You used a direct translation and I just got it wrong, logically it's "Tennis Boyfriend" as in a boyfriend that likes tennis.
Also, this wasn't the comment for you, my comment for you was a lot harsher.
OmgSuiseiseki 3 years ago
actually, I and the translator are both right.

Like they decided one day to get out the tripod and their dads video camera and go wild?
eridaniblack 3 years ago
I have to admit, it's a very cute and bubbily song, and it's great to see a 'popular' band sing in different languages. I don't think she's had any formal training in Japanese, which makes this even more amazing, but I think you can kind of tell that she hasn't had any training, or she hasn't practiced in a while with some of the pronunciation for a few of the words.
Still, great song!

the best part of the song is when the music changes at 4:18
jb4492 3 years ago
I like the part 4:00-the end.I think that because it sounds cool and sort of sad.Its hard to explain.
rcurly11 3 years ago
normally, I LOVE Freezepop's songs, but in this one, when she's talking, she kinda ruins the beautiful language of Japanese... =_=;;
DuelistGirl97 3 years ago
Shut the fuck up you fucking weeaboo faggot. Go suck a dick and die. Cocksucker.
Uuzuki 3 years ago
Wow, that was very VERY intelligent and thought out... Well, I guess if you were educated about Japanese at ALL you'd be able to tell she isn't pronouncing things smoothly like she's supposed to...but I won't get into how incredibly asinine you're being...
DuelistGirl97 3 years ago
I do know what you mean, but I've also heard the horrible butchering of German by the Japanese voice actress who played Asuka in Evangelion. I think this all balances out somehow ^_^.
At least language barriers are being crossed. The alternative is everyone speaking/singing Esperanto...
Oh, and Liz can do no wrong.
ziczoc 3 years ago
Yeah, and what I said applies for people all of all languages and cultures. Like Gackt butchers English... and I don't sing in Swedish or Korean in public because I slaughter the language... but at least I try to sound like I'm speaking their language. She spoke it like...an American... it just sounds awful... she doesn't even try using an accent or anything.
Oh, and thank you for being so intelligent in conversation and not just telling me to go suck a dick. ^-^ *points below*
DuelistGirl97 3 years ago
Faggot, just because you use asanine and proper English doesn't make you any less of a weeaboo. She's pronouncing words slightly incorrectly because she doesn't spend her time learning Japanese after watching a "ZOMG KAWAII ANIMA" like you. Admit it, if it was any language besides Japanese (which your major in was probably based on your love for anime) and you knew it fluently but it was your second language you wouldn't care.
OmgSuiseiseki 3 years ago
I've tried sending this comment about 5 times, and it never sends.
But anyway...I never knew being well educated (and mostly self-taught thanks to the shitty American public schools) meant I was a "faggot". This only proves further that you have no idea what you're talking about. Also, while I love anime, that isn't the reason I'm learning Japanese. Furthermore, I'm also learning more languages. So, you can shut your mouth. 分かりますか.
DuelistGirl97 3 years ago
O RLY?
Your entire profile full of Shonen Ai says otherwise. Also, so there's nothing wrong with the other songs that Freezepop did in other languages? The ones that aren't Japanese? Face it, you're a weeaboo.
OmgSuiseiseki 3 years ago
Ok, can you fucking read?
"While I love anime, that isn't the reason I'm learning Japanese." See, admitting I love anime. However, that is not the reason for wanting to move to Japan. It is because I hate being in my country, mostly.
And, if I KNEW they said something wrong or stepped all over another language, I'd defend that language, too. I don't know all the languages in the world, you know.
Also, what in Kira's name is a "weeaboo"? Don't fill your head with such fucking useless info.
DuelistGirl97 3 years ago
Says the person who uses "Kira" instead of "God". What inspired you to learn Japanese, then? If you don't like your country you could have easily went to somewhere better that speaks English, like England or Australia. There is some silent (or not so much) appeal about anime to you, which is why you want to go to Japan. Japan isn't exactly a perfect country, you know.
OmgSuiseiseki 3 years ago
Yeah, I've told you twice I love anime, you know.
DuelistGirl97 3 years ago
>people like you don't know there is more in Japan than anime
I think you have problems with identity, that's me, not you.
>people in Japan are so much smarter, kinder, and polite
Someone doesn't know about how Japan views American tourists.
OmgSuiseiseki 3 years ago
mmkay, obviously, you have everything backwards and are too narrow-minded and completely stupid to accept the truth.
So, with that, I say that you're not even WORTH my time. Go around with your head in the clouds. I don't give a fuck. You won't get another reply from me, just because you're so tiresome. Society hates people like you.
DuelistGirl97 3 years ago
I bet you're fapping right now. Into a sock.
"O LAWD I'M SO INTELLIGENT"
OmgSuiseiseki 3 years ago
I don't mean to butt in, so I'll be polite and refrain from swearing. =]
'DuelistGirl97' has all the right she wants to learn Japnese, whether it is the fact about Anime is AWESOME or Japan is a great, culturistic(?) country. No country is perfect, England sucks because of all the knife crime and vandalism. I know, because where I live it isn't exactly the nicest place to live in and I've seen fights, graffiti... Allsorts. And I'm sure America has an equal amount of this. (I can't anymore)
PNTproductions 3 years ago 2
It's one thing to like a country, it's another thing to be an obsessed elitist about it. Look at their French song, do you see people complaining about their French? Nope, just Japanese. People are obsessed over this little country, and they think they're gods or something.
OmgSuiseiseki 3 years ago
If you're talking about Freezepop: They are sort of the God's of Synth-Pop, I guess. I don't think I'll find any band better than this.
If you're talking about Japan: They are God's in a way that they've changed the world with Nintendo and Sony. I'd love to go to Japan someday...
PNTproductions 3 years ago 3
Freezepop is one of my all time favorite bands, I was talking about Japan. People think they're some kind of holy sanctuary of completely innocent people who bend to wills and enjoy rabid tourists. I can't help but think that the media helps hype it up a lot.
OmgSuiseiseki 3 years ago
Well, Japan are apparantly quite nice. I know that on some documentury's it show's the explicit video's it makes and alot of crime ect. But most of the people are kind, as I have a few Japanese friends. =]
PNTproductions 3 years ago
I'm not really sure about their relations with tourists. All of the textbooks I read say that they don't really enjoy tourism, and other say that they're nice to tourists. Eh.
Explicit videos aren't even where it starts. Used panty vending machines?
OmgSuiseiseki 3 years ago
There is VERY little crime in Japan. I live there for years and having traveled a bit I can say it is lovely IMO.
mrslewis98 3 years ago 3
Yeah but when there is, its is usually something serious. lol

So yours is secondhand knowledge? Might want to refrain from proclaiming yourself an expert. Those of us that have actually lived there might suddenly want to poke you with a fork.
