Evening Brett, if you couldn't get your hands on one of these (or the wait might drive you crazy), is there something else out there you might consider? I am looking for something with I can run direct into my recorder and jam silently (with headphones). Any suggestions?
@SingleCoilVoodoo Hey Phil! Greetings from South Australia where I'm on the road with James Reyne and INXS. You've just caught me in a little down time. Nice one! Alternatives: I'd go for the Blonde. Cheap, tons of sounds and can be used in all the good ways - amp, recording, direct etc. Cheers, B.
Nice demo! this was the reason I got on the waiting list for the ethos. I posted a video response of me trying it out with the zendrive, landgraff and klon... Hope that's cool?
outstanding tone! are you usin the laney amp here?...may I ask you if you learned to play and developed your style all by yourself? or did someone help you in getting started/improve your skills?
@frenzexperiment No Laney; straight to the computer via an M-Audio Profire 610. I've been playing since '73. I had formal lessons for about 2 years and when my dear old music teacher passed on I continued to teach myself. This is a first take improvisation. I had the tag riff in my head and improvised the rest. There are some strange notes in there that I can't explain (because my theory sucks) but I left it as is because it seemed to have that 'something' that I'd probably ruin in a second run.
Like the bass on this pedal alot...That's what fattens the sound for my ears...besides, of course, the big push it gives too. Makes my chords sound a lot more like pat martino's chords...rough and tough.
This sounds really nice and I really think that the idea of not having any amp is great since most amps needs the distortion and frequency response from the speaker at too high volumes to sound nice.
Were you using the ethos overdrive pedal straight into the front of the amp?? Or was it into the effects return to bypass the amps preamp. Do you have experience with putting the ethos into the front "and" into an amps effects return so the ethos is the only tone making part of the tone. What did you find?
@nznaturopath In this vid I ran the Ethos straight to the computer via an M-Audio ProFire 610. No amps were involved. Yes, it makes a great standard stompbox to the front of any clean amp or an equally if not better preamp to the effects return of an amp. Unfortunately I had to sell this one to cover some medical expenses and I'm now on a long waiting list like everyone else to buy another. That's life.. :)
@Burgerman666 Oh far out, that sucks eh. Selling because of medical, hope the medical worked out ok. YEah, i was on the list for 2 years, now it will be here in less than a week. Finally see what it is like into my Mark 5 Mesa Boogie. Should be stunning with that lonestar clean. Ill do a demo and let you know. rock on!
@prsfan01 I can't remember exactly. Whatever Rob's List Price was back then. Unfortunately I had to sell it recently to cover some bills so I'm hoping to be put on the waiting list for another. I miss it dearly!
I love this song!!!i am curently in a percussion class at my school and my teacher assigned my class to look up different percussionists and im so glad i did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well done sir. i have the ethos tle/classic. for an xtra $50.00 rob will put a toggle on the side that lets you switch 'tween the 2. the best of both worlds. got mine about a year ago and wouldn't want to be without it. keep up the good work burg.
@DFojas Yup. That's the Ethos. And the best pickups in the world, IMO. And my humble fingers which were in reasonable form that evening. Heheh. Thanks!
Hey Burgerman! How would this workout before a Sansamp Liverpool and California direct? I have a Damage Control Liquid Blues before them now. Would that be overkill? Any thoughts? Thanks man!! : )
@electricfiddle1313 Overkill maybe, but a very luxurious overkill! The Ethos would serve two purposes: That of your Tech 21's and the DC (which I haven't tried so cannot comment, sorry). But as a direct device, the Ethos is right up there as I hope this video serves to prove. As a standard stomp box with the big 'D' flavor it also excels; some would say it's superior to anything else. Do you really need it with your current set-up? Probably not. But damn, you'd enjoy it! Heheh. Cheers, BK.
Outstanding sir!!! Recordings like this (and Tim Lerch) helped me to get on the Ethos build list. Now to find the "Right" Tele, or probably a NOS 51 Nocaster. Thank you for this.
Mr. Burgerman, couple of questions for you if you don't mind. Have you alos played the Ethos TLE and is so, do you prefer the classic or the tle?? Secondly, are there any other drive pedals out there similar to the Ethos or is it pretty much there ain't nothing like it?? Damn nice pedals and great vid as always. Thanks
This is the Ethos TLE, it's the Classic that I haven't tried. Any other drive pedals like this one? There are a couple of 'Dumblesque' pedals out there like the Zendrive for instance, but I haven't tried any of them and from a distance few are as well appointed as the Ethos. Thanks for watching. :)
Thanks. Yeah, I was lucky with this one; I just closed my eyes, tried to relax, and played the first thing that came to me. The jazz noodlings are mistakes that on second listen I decided to leave because there was 'something' about them that sounded OK. Yes, straight from the speaker sim out to the M-Audio ProFire 610. Cheers and thanks for watching. :)
It's funny that you aren't particulary fond of the Zen yet love the Ethos. I'm quite the opposite... My Zen and Zen2 are absolute "with me for life" pedals, while my Ethos can go on the auction block anytime. Of course, it's hard to argue with the tone you're getting out of yours here... but I blame your fingers for that more than the pedal... ;-)
I just can't seem to get tones I'm really happy with. Whish of course is odd considering the nomber of controls here... I probably own 50+ pedals of all types and a dozen amps and a dozen guitars, so I DO know how to find decent tone. Plenty of people love this pedal so I wouldn't cancel delivery just because i guy (me) doesn't like it all that much. I've never tried it direct like Burgs does here, so that's definitely something the Zen can't do... but this pedal costs like 3x a Zen as well...
I came across an article about the ethos in the Sept. 09 guitarplayer I had. I overlooked the article at first. After reading it and hearing this I know what I will be saving for next. Incredible video and tone. Thanks again for the great demos.
I just love that tone...Gotta get me one! How does it compare to the Zendrive? Would you recommend it as maybe the 2nd best Dumble inspired pedal for those who don't want to shell out $400 for a pedal?
I tried a Zendrive once. And I have to say that it didn't do it for me at all. Maybe I didn't understand it. But plenty of other people dig it, that's for sure. You have to remember that you're listening to the Ethos' speaker sim here, it's going direct to the Mac. The Zendrive doesn't offer this. I'll do another clip with Ethos into my amp over the next two weeks. Another factor, for me at least, is that I bought the Ethos on its own merits - not because of the Dumble association.
I don't even know what the definitive Dumble sound is. I just know that Ethos pedal sounds great, but if it sounds like a Dumble, then a Dumble must be a damn good amp.:) I'm going to check out a Fuchs ODS 50 watt combo in the next couple weeks I think. It's supposedly got the Dumble tone as well.
Different class altogether, SP. The HotWired is a great, great dual function TS type overdrive, especially good for Telecaster. The Ethos is a very different beast. You said it yourself, "Insanely awesome tones..". And I couldn't agree more. In fact, it's my number one drive for every occasion now and if there's no amp to jack it into, then that doesn't matter either because the speaker sim out sounds better anyway (in a lot of cases). Try one and see. If you don't like it, there's a queue... :)
Hey Grant! I must admit that that I'm not entirely sure what your sorts of sounds are - doh! There's not much it can't do though - for me. You're in town next week, aren't you?
I ordered on recently and was told it would be a ready 10 months from now... i found one used and picked that up instead... a classic/TLE switching model.. should be hear in a few days
Enjoy it. I know you will. I have about 5 drives on my board including this one. None of the others come close at stage volume. Not even close. The Ethos TLE is dynamic, living, breathing work of sonic art.
And just for the record, I paid full retail price like everyone else.
Generic, Chinese power supply with 5 x 9V's and 4 x 18V's. I used one of the 18V's with a 2.1mm tip to the Ethos. That's it. :) I'm saving my Voodoo Lab supply purchase for the Versa.
Sure, you can run it from 9 to 18V. Customtones have very specific powering suggestions on their site which you should have a look at. For the record, I run mine at 18V for maximum headroom. Works for me! DLS? Yes, the Ethos doesn't mind seeing a hot/dirty signal BEFORE it, not after. Have fun!

Thanks again. Lovely sounds, very amplike. I can't believe how much you're following my thoughts - this is one more pedal that I'm planning to get very soon...
