Actually it is said that Spartans did not wear any chestplates or any other armor, for they had to be light so they could fight long shifts. Some say that they even fought naked.
@JConnolly2211 OMG you ignorant idiot, vases are sold objects, they show what looks good so people buy it. Overarm you expose your unprotected armpit, you have less striking range and you have less striking freedom. Talking about brain... you're just an ignorant moron who sticks with his first thought no matter what and cant change his mind. Fuck you.
@pijef dont cry like a baby back bitch just because your comeback back-fired, LOL and seriously? punctuation on my sentences? im on youtube, not writing a fucking essay about how pijef is gayer than elton john
the freakin shield was much mor bigger and the women of Spartan warriors were telling them befor going to a battle ΗΤΑΝ Η ΕΠΙΤΑΣ whitch means come with your sield on your arms (if you come alive) or upon it (so they will carry you if you are dead) and they show spartans with these little freakin shields??????
Does anyone find it strange how they say "Get the vieves the generals wished they had",if any of the ancient generals wached this they woud probably get a heart attack...:)
I hate to say this, but Sparta did not let slaves run buisness. Women did this. This was another difference to Athens, where women had no rights at all.
@theshadowling1 It's so true because when their husbands went to battle, they told the Spartans to "get back with it or on it," which means get back victorious along with your shield or be a corpse on it.
overarm? lol no they were not wielded overarm they were mostly wielded underarm i mean underarm has more pros than cons just cause theese "experts" saw somethin on a vase doesnt mean it HAD to be so
Man, I spent most of my childhood playing games like Age of Empires and Rome: Total War, now I probably know more about World History than 99% of my class.
@GrovyleXShinyCelebi Well I hope you don't base all your Historical knowledge solely on these two games, but these were more a base of interest in History, and you progressed from here lol. That happened to me with Command & Conquer, then from there, I got heavily into WW1 and 2
But no video technology and no TV-history will ever tell you what the Greeks were fighting for. It will not even let you know what a Greek is. And no, a Greek is no national characterization. You can be a Greek just as you can be a lover of arts, internationally. We do not fight for a garden and a home. We do not fight for a wife and a child. We do fight for other things. Much more precious things. We fight for the ecclesia of the demos. The participation to the common.
As much as I like how they shown battles in Greece, Rome, and Egypt. I wished they could of done battles in East Asia. There were huge names they could of done like Genghis Khan or Sun Tzu.
@pijef Wow you have no right to say that when you can't even spell "spell". Now get your cock-mongeling ass back to your basement cave-dwelling you fat mother-leech. TROLOLOLOLOLOLO!!
It wasn't a spelling mistake. I spilled water on my keyboard and my "p" key is stuck. Sometimes when I type fast my "p" key doesn't enter the letter because its hard to press. holy shit history channel used Rome Total War. but then where the hell are the mods? seriously i want to get this. I prefer REAL Spartans over red toga wearing dudes with what looks like a Persian helmet that just covers the top of their head
Its not the game, its the Total War engine which was released for them to use before the game even came out. Rome Total war was released on 22 sep 2004 and the Decisive Battles by the History Channel aired their 1st battle in July of 2004. A preliminary but completely workable version of the game engine was used prior to the games release.
i agree with holdnitdown240 too much cop, judge , reality bullshit. let a new generation get a glimpse of some dedicated badasses . during ww2 10% o the world's population was maimed, wounded, or outright killed. didn't make page 3 in the newspapers. now a camel farts in yemen and oil prices go crazy.
They didn't use the Spartan Hoplite "unit" in this re-creation. They either moded it (which I did for my game) or they just recoloured the Armored Hoplite units.
Even the show thinks the original Spartans unit design that RTW first came out with are ugly hahaha!
4:50 yes the CITY Sparta probably had around 9,000 citizens but back in the olden days people lived in the countryside in fact it's likely that most spartans lived in the countryside. The state was called sparta and so was the capital city. Sparta wasn't like Monaco or the vaticant. The city controlled a lot of land around it that probably had tens of thousands of more spartan citizens.
5:20 this guy speaking is meant to be like a clever scholar or something like that who knows the shit he speaks about yet for some reason he pronounces Thermopylae by Latin phonetics and he doesn't realise that in greek the words that end with "ee" are spelt the same as latin words which end in "aye" when the latin word came from the greek word when spelt with the latin alphabet. The accent changes over time. What an idiot. Clearly his studies are limited to the roman world onwards.
It's pretty awesome that this documentary used such a great game as a simulator. I would love to see more documentaries like this with the newer games like medieval 2, shogun 2, and empire. It makes an interesting documentary even better.
@dachicagoan Because the Greeks had interfered in Persian affairs, it all began with the Ionian revolt which Athens supported. The Persians couldn't let that pass and had to make an example of them otherwise other provinces in the empire might revolt.
@SUPERHERO700 well it seems your only source of information is the movei.... just to enlight you a bit my poor friend spartans (greeks generally) except of the most powerful armies also had the most comlexed and interesting cultures... when we had democracy you were fighting for bananas and climbing trees... and just to remind you your ancestors were barbarian tribes who tried to conquer roman empire... i would recommend you to study more before you speak for such delicated issues
@1999521 First of all, the show said MODERN DAY turkey. So they are correct as that would refer to anatolia. And the map is quite accurate of the persain empire's borders. Remember, this was the greatest power the world had seen. It was HUGE.
@Xtremesportguys603 I´m talking about the MAP, dude. The MAP, seen in 1:06, says only turkey. That would be like writing england in a map of the ancient british isles.
And I say nothing about the size of the persian empire, man. That has NOTHING TO DO with the topic we are discussing. You´re right, it was the biggest the world had seen. But they simply had no chance against the greeks. That´s why Alexander crushed them easily 150 years later.
